AIR CONDITIONING IN THE AUDITORIUM

Assisted by a generous grant from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, we are installing air conditioning in our parish auditorium. The parish is also paying a portion of the cost, and those funds come from the proceeds of our Fall Festival and car raffle.

Thanks to all of those whose hard work and generosity make this improvement possible.

Dear friends, At the Chrism Mass on April 3, 2017 Archbishop Jose Gomez announced that Pope Francis has honored 15 priests of our Archdiocese with the title “Chaplain to His Holiness”, which means they can now be addressed as “Monsignor”. I am one of the priests so honored. This makes me happy because it is an honor for our whole parish, and symbolizes our unity with Francis our Pope, Jose our Archbishop, and the whole Body of Christ, the Church.

In the Fall there will be a ceremony at the Cathedral for all of the priests who have been honored.

Many of you will remember our former pastor Monsignor Patrick Thompson, may he rest in peace. Though he was named a Monsignor, even now he continues to be known to all of us as “Father Pat.” Let’s continue to observe that tradition. Please always call me “Father Austin”; there is no higher title than that.

The Readings and their Message

Acts 2:42-47 The story of Pentecost closes with a summary of the characteristics of the first Christian communities in Jerusalem; it describes the practices that express this life as a response to discipleship of Christ: the teachings of the apostles and the breaking of the bread. The sharing of all goods is added. The wealthy sold their properties and shared them in the community. As a fruit of the Spirit, the community continued to grow rapidly.

1 Peter 1:3-9 The letters from Peter are known as general or Catholic because, in contrast to the letters from Paul, they are not addressed to a specific community. The first letter from Peter is not a theological treatise, but expresses the hope of Christians. The promises made to Israel are fulfilled in the life and resurrection of Jesus. Israel was promised the land, but the new Israel is promised an eternal home in heaven. God does not disappoint and he will fulfill his plan for humanity. The letter opens, after the greeting, with a solemn blessing in the style of Jewish blessings. Blessing is the same as giving thanks. The author (a disciple of Peter) gives thanks for the salvation of the communities, through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

John 20:19-31 The intention of John is to connect the divine Jesus with the human one, so that the readers could see that the Jesus who had traveled with them on earth was the same one who now reigns with the Father and the Spirit. Some in the community preferred to center on divinity, somehow excluding the crucified Jesus. John tells how Jesus showed his wounds to Thomas, to remind the community of his death and resurrection. These narrations of appearances after the resurrection also serve to strengthen the community in the Lord’s absence and in anticipation of his second coming.

Lo siguiente es de “Nuestra Parroquia”

Las lecturas y su mensaje Hechos 2:42-47 La historia de Pentecostés cierra con un resumen de las características de las primeras comunidades cristianas en Jerusalén; describe las prácticas que expresan esa vida como respuesta al seguimiento de Cristo: las enseñanzas de los apóstoles y la fracción del pan. Se añade la idea de compartir todos los bienes. Los ricos vendían sus propiedades y las repartían en la comunidad. Como fruto del Espíritu, la comunidad seguía creciendo rápidamente. 1 Pedro 1:3-9 Las cartas de Pedro se conocen como generales o católicas, porque, a diferencia de las de Pablo, no van dirigidas a una comunidad específica. La primera carta de Pedro no es un tratado teológico, sino que expresa la esperanza de los cristianos. Las promesas hechas a Israel se cumplen en la vida y resurrección de Jesús. A Israel se le prometió la tierra, pero al nuevo Israel se le promete un hogar eterno en el cielo. Dios no defrauda y llevará a cabo su plan para la humanidad. Después del saludo, la carta comienza con una bendición solemne al estilo de las bendiciones judías. Bendecir es igual a dar gracias. El autor (un discípulo de Pedro) da gracias por la salvación de las comunidades, por medio de la muerte y resurrección de Jesucristo. Juan 20:19-31 La intención de Juan es conectar al Jesús divino con el humano, para que sus lectores se dieran cuenta de que el Jesús que había caminado en la tierra era el mismo que ahora reina con el Padre y el Espíritu. Algunos en la comunidad preferían centrarse en la divinidad excluyendo de alguna manera al Jesús crucificado. Juan dice cómo Jesús le mostró sus llagas a Tomás, para recordarle a la comunidad su muerte y resurrección. Estas narraciones de apariciones después de la resurrección también sirven para fortalecer a la comunidad en ausencia del Señor y en espera de la segunda venida.

Queridos amigos, En la Misa Crismal del 3 de abril 2017, el Arzobispo José Gómez anunció que el Papa Francisco tuvo el honor de honrar a 15 sacerdotes de nuestra Arquidiócesis con el título de "Capellán a Su Santidad", lo que significa que ahora pueden ser llamados "Monseñor". Yo soy uno de los sacerdotes tan honrados. Esto me hace feliz porque es un honor para toda nuestra parroquia y simboliza nuestra unidad con nuestro Papa Francisco, José nuestro Arzobispo y todo el Cuerpo de Cristo, la Iglesia. En el otoño habrá una ceremonia en la Catedral para todos los sacerdotes que han sido honrados. Muchos de ustedes recordarán a nuestro ex pastor Mons. Patrick Thompson, que descanse en paz. Nuestro nuevo Seminarista

Estamos felices de anunciar que nuestro parroquiano Sr. Emilio Carbajal ha sido aceptado para comenzar sus estudios como Seminarista para la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles. Emilio es un estudiante universitario que ha estado activo en la Legión de María aquí en San Antonio y también como catequista y lector en nuestras parroquias vecinas. Por favor manténgalo en sus oraciones mientras él responde al llamado de Dios para servir.
