Happy Fourth of July
I am always excited to celebrate our nation’s Independence with the Residents of Westminster Village.
We have a great time with music and food every year. What would the Fourth of July be without our Kendall, dressed
for the occasion? William King will be here to entertain. The BBQ ribs, pork and chicken are always a treat along
with beans, slaw and potato salad (MMM, MMM, GOOD). Blytheville will have its own fireworks display at dusk at
the Sports Plex. The Blytheville Advertising and Tourism Committee sponsors the fireworks, which is appreciated by
the Blytheville community. Go out and enjoy the festivities. A little trivia about other fireworks displays is: The
famous Macy's fireworks display usually held over the East River in New York City has been televised nationwide on
NBC since 1976. The Boston Pops Orchestra has hosted music and fireworks show over the Charles River Esplanade
called the "Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular" annually since 1973. On the Capitol lawn in Washington, D.C., "A
Capitol Fourth", is put on with a free concert, preceded with the fireworks and attracts over half a million people
annually.
What a fishing trip we had on Saturday. It was so much fun
for everyone. We went to Charlie’s Catfish Pond in
Kennett. It looked like rain all the way there and it was
overcast all morning but the rain never came. I caught the
biggest fish to start us off. It was a 5.567 pound catfish.
Kendall helped me get him in the net. He was a real beauty!
Everyone caught fish and we are all telling fishing stories.
It was so great to have Kendall and Frank, a friend of Mary
Rixse, there to help all of us. It had been a long time since I
had gone fishing but it will not be the last time. All of us
want to go back to Charlie’s real soon. ...(continued next page)

Sharon and the Dining Committee just keep coming up
with great events for the Café. The ice Cream Social
was such a great time and so delicious. They are now
planning a Fruit Festival on July 15. It too promises to
be a fun time and yummy. They also plan to start a
“Welcome Home” for new residents that have moved
to the Village this year. Sharon will send invitations to
residents to come and dine in the Café to get
acquainted with the menu and meet residents. They
will start this in August and will advertising it in the
newsletter so that residents can come on that day and
meet these new residents. The Café is serving fresh
fruit daily on the bar. If you haven’t visited the Café
lately come join us for a great dining experience.
Tommy MacDonald will be at the Chapel on Sunday,
July 6 at 2 p.m. for some good Gospel singing. He
invites all residents wanting to participate in the
singing to come join the fun or if you are like me and

Thursday evening Bible Study at the Chapel at 6 p.m.
led by Reverend Nathaniel and Elizabeth Smith. Our
Tuesday Bible Study will return with Sue Forrester in

We invite you to please enjoy the summer and all it has
to offer. There are so many fun events on the calendar
to enjoy. Don’t forget about our wonderful library and
craft hut. Come join me at Linda’s Corner where we

VILLAGE CAFÉ NEWS Dear Residents, I would like to thank all the residents that came to the ice cream social, I really hope you had as much fun as I did. Please watch out for upcoming events like our Fresh Fruit Festival in July! I am so glad that I decided to come to the Village and I hope to make a difference in your lives. My goal this summer is to offer more seasonal food like homemade chicken salad and homemade tuna salad. Soup will be substituted with fresh fruit every other day. Beginning the month of August the Café and the Dining Committee will be hosting a “Welcome Home” luncheon once a month. We are going to go back to the first of the year and invite new resident move ins. This will be posted on the calendar each month and we would like for many residents to come to the Café that day to welcome our new residents as they come and get acquainted with the Café. I really want you to feel the café belongs to the residents and your dining staff is here to serve you. We really would love to see more residents at the café daily. Please feel free to give any suggestions and comments. Thanks again to all those on the dining committee. Your help and suggestions are appreciated. Sharon Jackson, Dining Director
Administrative News It finally happened. After six years with his steady girlfriend my son asked her to be his wife on Friday night. My son has a flair for the dramatic so it was no surprise to find out he took her to the board walk overlooking the ocean the night of the fireworks display. As the fireworks display was coming to an end, he got down on one knee and under the sparkling lights, proposed to her. She cried like a baby and after she said a teary yes, a crowd that had unknowingly gathered applauded. Then he went on to make the weekend just as special by taking her out to dine and seeing her absolute favorite “the little mermaid” live. Extraordinary! That is what we all seem to be looking for, that extraordinary gesture that says to all, “I care about you”. Her ring, or should I say her bling, is beautiful. We all could use a little sparkle and bling. The employees of Westminster Village work hard to serve the residents of Westminster Village. Every day we are witness to the extraordinary service they provide. Our employees often go above and beyond their job description to help a resident because we/they care about you. Our employees don’t stop at one question of “how may I help you” but continue daily to make your time here special. Extraordinary Impressions is a wonderful incentive program. Employees reported receive the sparkle of a gold coin and yes some “bling”. Employees receive a half day off with pay when they are reported five times and an extra $100 in their paycheck when reported ten times. Some employees have received more sparkle and bling than others. This means that some employees are not getting caught in the act. So we urge you to continue to keep your eyes open and report, report, report those “extraordinary impressions”.
Cindy Williamson Administrative Director
Summer. Just hearing the word and I am flooded with images of my grandmother’s back porch. Many good things
happened when people got together and conversation flowed like running water. There was always talk of the past which
kept us in touch with our history.
Good food was always a part of those gatherings. I will always remember the freshly baked pies and cakes, fresh fruit and
enough chicken to make Colonel Saunders jealous. My grandmother was famous in Monroe County, Arkansas for her
homemade cherry pies and fresh strawberry cake.
On most summer days, the porch was a workplace. My mother and grandmother sat on the porch and shelled peas, cut okra,
shucked corn and talked. My grandmother always wore an apron and would have my sister and I sit at her feet with our
own little bowls of peas to shell. We shelled peas from my grandparent’s garden until my thumb turned purple.
My grandfather would come in from the field and walk thru the garden and bring in an armful of fresh corn to be shucked
and big, ripe tomatoes to slice. My grandmother would not only cook these fresh vegetables for supper, but she would also
“put up” vegetables for the winter – canning and freezing the produce from their garden. I do not think I was much help,
but I loved being there with the adults, listening as they talked while saving one of the best parts of summer in glass jars.
We would also cap strawberries for jelly and to go on top of ice cream made in their old ice cream maker. My grandmother
would prepare homemade cooked custard vanilla ice cream for us to churn. All the kids would fight over turning the crank
and then more fighting would break out when it was ready to see who would get to lick the beater. Every time I hear the
creak of a swing, the slam of a screen door, the smell of freshly cut grass or the taste of homemade ice
cream, I always remember. What are your back porch memories? Slow down, relax and take some time
today to remember and share your back porch memories with someone over a glass of sweet iced tea or
lemonade. Back porch memories can be a five minute…or fifty minute vacation from the hectic-ness of
the day.

Things you need to know about SODIUM
Sodium is important
It is an electrolyte and plays a key roll in hydration. Sodium
works to push water into cells while potassium does the job
of pushing water out of the cells. This balance helps prevent
hydration and promotes healthy cell function. Sodium is also
required for nerve function, muscle function and maintaining
a healthy blood pressure.
The right amount of Sodium
The recommendation for sodium intake is 2,300 mg/day for
adults (equals about 1 tsp of table salt). Most people
consume too much sodium through processed foods and table
salt. This is the upper limit of recommended consumption.
The population with high blood pressure or at risk of high
blood pressure should limit consumption to 1.500 mg/day.
The minimum requirement for normal body function is 5oo
mg/day.
Dangers of too much Sodium
Too much sodium can lead to hypertension which is a risk
factor for heart disease, stroke and kidney failure. It is
important to be aware of the sodium content in processed
foods. Be conscious of reading labels to check the sodium
content. Canned soups have as much as 1,000 mg per
serving. Also limit salting food at the table. When eating out,
be aware that many foods are heavily seasoned with salt
during preparation.
Dangers of low levels of Sodium
Sodium is necessary for the body to function normally.
Intense and prolonged physical activity can cause a loss of
sodium through sweating. This is called hyponatremia.
Symptoms are fatigue and confusion but can lead to more
serious conditions of seizure, coma or death.
So—watch your sodium intake to maintain a healthy, well
balanced level.
Yours in wellness,
Peggy
