A word from the Administrator…
At long last the Master Plan for the development of 261
senior housing units on our 70 acre campus is complete.
Phase one of the project will consist of 23 villas along
with a recreation building and a seasonal pool. The units
will be built around a “town green” whose focal point
will be an attractive gazebo surrounded by flowering
gardens.
Three different floor plans for our single level villas can
be seen in the insert that accompanies this newsletter.
Our spacious units will all have garages, screened
porches and some will even have walk out basements.
They are complimented by high ceilings, an open floor
plan, large windows that take advantage of light and our
beautiful waterfront surroundings. The dramatic foyers
open into an expansive living room and open adjacent
kitchen. Ideal for entertaining, this open, airy design
features a warm, bright living room with large windows
and optional fireplace. The kitchen and breakfast nook
offers abundant counter space and is open to both the
dining area and living room. The inviting master bed-
room suite is enhanced by a spacious walk in closet and
a luxurious master bath. Our smallest 1135 sq ft unit
offers an additional half bath and a comfortable den,
while the largest 1850 sq ft unit offers a second bed-
room as well as a den.
The next step will be to have town officials review our
plans and then obtain the required approvals from the
regulatory agencies. We anticipate breaking ground
next year and look forward to the first residents moving
in sometime in early 2013. If you would like to be on a
mailing list to receive updated information about our
development, please call Mary Stonely at 860-445-7478
ext 443 or email her at [email protected].

FUNDRAISING REPORT FOR JULY 1, 2010 THRU JUNE 30, 2011
Fairview once again maintained its five-star rating this year from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Our reputation is impeccable. We have our generous donors to thank for helping us achieve this recognition.
Below is a listing of our fundraising results during the past year from overall donations, special events, and grants
along with information regarding our ongoing annual fund:
During the period of July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011 Fairview’s fundraising campaign has produced the
following results: Eight-hundred and sixty donations accounted for $215,349.46. This is a 13.3% increase over last
year’s dollar total.
The Fairview Antiques & Collectibles Auction was held on November 6 and generated a net profit of
$59,197.52. The eight auctions held to date have realized a total net profit of just over $310,000.00. (Please see
insert for information on the 2011 auction).
Fairview’s sixth annual car raffle was held on July 9. Five-hundred and seven tickets were sold for a net profit
of $30,199.90. This is the most the raffle has ever raised. Total net revenue for all six raffles is just over
$127,000.00.
Our sixth annual fund appeal is ongoing. It began in January of this year. As of this writing we have one-
hundred and thirteen donors who have contributed $13,906.54. This is a slight increase over last year at this time.
The fund year closes on December 31. Our goal is $25,000. The Grand Lodge of CT has also agreed to pro-
vide a $5,000 matching gift. So, we are within reach of our goal. If you haven’t already made a gift to the an-
nual fund a donor envelope is included in this newsletter.

THE DIME BANK
MAKES
CONTRIBUTION
The Dime Bank re-
cently made a
$1,000.00 donation
to Fairview to help
pay for the purchase
of resident bathing
tubs. The bank has
been a consistent
supporter of Fair-
view for several years. Pictured with David Brown,
director of development, is Nancy Potter, New Lon-
don, CT Dime Bank Branch Manager.
EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR
CHOSEN AT FAIRVIEW
The Culture Change Committee reviewed several
outstanding candidates that were nominated for the
“Employee of the Year” award. It was a tough deci-
sion, but the winner was nine-year veteran first shift
CNA Gladys Smith. Gladys was nominated by her
m a n a g e r
because of
the excep-
tional job
she does
day-in and
d a y - o u t .
She is al-
ways on
time, never
m i s s e s
work and
goes above and beyond expectations for compas-
sionate care to the residents she works with. Gladys
and her husband Brian will enjoy a week’s accom-
modations at The Cove at Yarmouth on Cape Cod
compliments of Fairview and through the generosity
of longtime Board of Trustee member Vin Barbieri
who donated the timeshare. Coincidently, Gladys
and her husband Jim never had a honeymoon so this
will be theirs. Pictured with Gladys (third from left)
are several members of the Culture Change commit-
tee including Administrator Jim Malloy (second
from right).
TESTIMONIAL FROM A
GRATEFUL FAMILY
There comes a time in our lives when we may need
to hand over the very person that is most precious to
us and surrender their care to someone else. Devas-
tating as this may be to families we are most grateful
in the way that your staff had given us a comfort
level in doing so as we witnessed incredible care and
compassion being delivered not only to our loved
one but to the family as well. By doing so we
(family) were allowed to just enjoy our last moments
with our Mom, our Grams, our Auntie, and say the
things we needed to say to her and to each other.
We were all carefully held in the arms of your entire
staff from nursing to the Bistro employees. What
better gift could we have been afforded. We are
grateful to Fairview and with most sincerity we
thank you.
From our family to yours,
The Shirkoff, Ackles and Brauneis Families
NIANTIC LODGE #17 DONATES FUNDS
FOR NEW DOORS
The Niantic Odd Fellows Lodge #17 donated
$1,600.00 to replace old, outdated sliding doors in
the Recreation Room at Fairview. The new French
Doors open out into a patio area off of the Recrea-
tion Room. The new doors are much more user
friendly as
they open
wider allow-
ing for eas-
ier access to
the patio by
residents in
wheelchairs.
As a bonus
the cost of
the doors
was half of what was expected so another set of slid-
ing doors in the Thames Room, a multi-purpose
room, was replaced with French Doors as well. Pic-
tured putting the finishing touches on the Recreation
Room doors is maintenance department employee,
John Dahl.

NIANTIC LODGE #17 AWARDS
TWO SCHOLARSHIPS
Niantic Lodge #17 awarded its first annual Robert
Fargo Memorial $500 Scholarship to recipient Kelly
O’Toole from East Lyme High School and its first
annual William Warren
Honorary $500 Scholarship
to recipient Bethany Hol-
land from Ledyard High
School. A major criteria in
the selection process was
the recipient’s involvement
in community service.
Both of these young ladies
have selflessly given so much of their time and ener-
gies toward enriching the lives of others both at
home and internationally. The awards presentations
were made during the lodge’s annual meeting and
picnic. Pictured (L-R) are Bethany and Kelly.
“POCKET LADIES” SUPPORT FAIRVIEW
AGAIN
The Groton Pocket Ladies have been hard at work
making clothing protectors for our residents. In the
past they have also made carry bags to attach to
“walkers” and colorful blankets. Pictured modeling
the new clothing protectors are (L-R) Sarah Stanley,
Recreation Department staff member, Carol Hessler,
F l o r a b e l l
Stoeckle, and
Marie Des
S u r e a u l t .
Missing from
the photo is
Sandy Banks.
Some of the
material for
the protectors
was donated
by “That’s Sew Debbie” located in Groton, CT. The
Niantic Lodge #17 also made a contribution to help
pay for the material.
INTERGENERATIONAL SOCIAL SKILLS
PROGRAM A HIT AT FAIRVIEW
Several children ranging in age from 5-16 visited
Fairview three times a week in July and August as
part of an intergenerational program sponsored by
the Sensations Charitable Foundation. The mission
of the Foundation is to create, conduct, and support
effective programs and services for families with
disabilities and health conditions. Through the ef-
forts of Brian Armstrong and Kate O’Boyle, pro-
gram directors, activities such as therapeutic art, mu-
sic, and social reading took place. Many of the
benefits of an intergenerational program for the chil-
dren included devel-
oping personal rela-
tionships, stimulat-
ing the senses, in-
creasing empathy,
improving commu-
nications skills, and
providing emotional
support. Fairview
residents in return received positive increases in
movement and mobility, experienced less isolation
and loneliness through social contact, and improved
their self-esteem. Pictured at one of the interactive
activities is Fairview resident Mary Soloweyko.
STONINGTON LODGE #26
PROVIDES NINE SCHOLARSHIPS
Through the generosity of the Stonington Odd Fel-
lows Lodge #26 nine $1,000 scholarships were
awarded to seniors who will be entering college this
fall from Stonington, Fitch, Ella T. Grasso Tech and
NFA high schools. These schools are located in the
southeastern part of the state of Connecticut. This
year the lodge increased the number of scholarships
it awards from three to nine. Criteria for the awards
include financial need and scholastic aptitude. Spe-
cial consideration is given to applicants who have
family members affiliated past or present with the
Stonington Lodge. Pictured are eight of the recipi-
ents who attended a formal awards presentation at
the lodge’s June meeting.

EXTENDED RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES
PROGAM A BIG HIT!
A new initiative by the Fairview Recreation Department is hav-
ing a tremendous positive effect on several residents who suf-
fer from the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s disease. This
idea is a direct result of the recently concluded pro-bono health
action team program with Pfizer.
The thought is to provide extra
stimulation to residents so they
have more purpose in their lives.
The current group consists of ap-
proximately twelve residents. The
change in their daily routine has
been dramatic. In the past many of
these residents would sleep and stay
in their rooms much of the day.
Now they greatly anticipate attending this program that takes
place five days a week for an hour and one-half each day. The
activities are fast paced and include music, dancing and inter-
generational programs. This is another example of a very posi-
tive result of Fairview’s partnership with the Pfizer health ac-
tion pro-bono team. Pictured is Recreation Department staff
member Sarah Stanley dancing with resident Theodora Kittle-
man.
REBEKAH LODGE
MEMBERS
VISIT FAIRVIEW
Members of the Welcome Rebekah
Lodge #47 from East Hartford, CT
made a visit to Fairview in July.
Instituted in 1899, the lodge nor-
mally holds its bi-monthly meetings (except July and August)
in East Hartford. During their visit they toured one of the in-
dependent living apartments in Fellowship Manor and met with
Administrator Jim Malloy. The Welcome Lodge has been very
supportive of Fairview over the past several years making do-
nations totaling several thousands of dollars. These contribu-
tions have helped purchase much needed medical equipment
and items for residents which has greatly increased their qual-
ity of life. The lodge members are pictured with Jim Malloy,
Fairview Administrator.

VOLUNTEER
SPOTLIGHT
Fairview is very fortunate to have
so many wonderful volunteers. It
is always difficult to recognize
one above the rest. Diane Riser
has been volunteering at Fairview
for six months. She has been
helping in the newly established
Extended Recreation Activities program (see accompanying photo/
caption on page 7) for Alzheimer’s residents. This program has
proven to be a wonderful addition to the therapeutic recreation depart-
ment’s list of resident activities. We thank Diane and all of our volun-
teers for their dedicated support. We would be lost without them.
The Fairview library is open 24 hours a day for families to use. There
is internet access and a laptop computer. We will soon have the pro-
gram Skype which will allow families to visually communicate with
their loved ones if they have this program on their home com-
puters. Please contact Recreation Director Tomi Stanley at 860-445-
7478 ext. 426 or at [email protected].
