It is common conversation between people, young or old, as to where has the time gone? Clearly, it hasn’t gone anywhere. So why is this such a topic of conversation? I am sure that many of you would agree, that it is more about the fact that we now live in such an ‘instant’ world which allows us to achieve so much in a day, that we don’t take the time to just enjoy the day. On most occasions, I see being able to achieve so much so quickly as a good thing, however I believe that this is a major factor in the overall pressure of getting things done, as quickly as we can. If we actually had to wait for things (Lord forbid! I hate waiting!) it would automatically create a gap in time that would allow us to slow down and do other things. Example: Years ago you would write a letter to address an issue, knowing full well that when the response came back to you, it may result in you having to ‘do something’. That was OK, as you knew that it would be at least 4 days before you got an answer, which provided you with a period of time to plan and attend to other things. Now, we send an email and then rush through the other things that need attention, knowing full well that within 30minutes you will have had a response to the email, which may very well mean you have to attend to 3 additional things before the day is over. The fact that you had already organised your tasks for that day, doesn’t matter! I must admit that I am one of those strange people who actually enjoys the hustle & bustle and the adrenalin rush of meeting deadlines. But like many others, I do wonder if the speed of technology and the expectation to keep up, will bring us down, long before global warming? It is hard to believe that I am sitting here typing for the May Newsletter!

Quality Corner!

As most of our readers would be aware, the governing body that ensures we comply with the legislation & regulations associated with residential aged care, is the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency. Besides the scheduled visits that we have with the agency at Accreditation time, the agency monitors performance and compliance through unannounced support visits. This is when they turn up at the front door at 9am in the morning, to say they are here to see how we are going and make sure we are still providing services as we should. The idea behind these visits, is that you have no time to ‘tidy things up’. If you are operating as you should be all the time, this is not a problem. I am proud of the fact that these visits have never been an issue for our home. We are more than happy for anybody to call in at any time and see how we operate. The assessors from the agency were able to share ideas with us, in relation to practices they have seen elsewhere. This is part of their role, as they have the privilege of visiting homes throughout the state, so any new ideas they may be able to pass on are always very welcome. However, I firmly believe the most important feedback that comes out of these visits is the feedback that comes back to us, from the residents who live here. Once again, this was very positive. All the residents, I believe, were honest in their praise for the staff , saying that the care and services provided could not be better. That will certainly not stop us from continually exploring better ways of doing things, but it is a credit to all our staff and the job that they do that we receive such praise. Well done everyone!

Coffee Shop—Ready For Opening

After some unforseen hold ups, the Gunther Coffee Shop is ready to go! Besides coffee, we

will be selling an array of tempting treats for morning and afternoon tea as well as light lunches.

We would like to invite all family, friends & visitors to the formal opening which will be at 10.30am

on Monday the 9th May. Please come along & support our new project, which we believe will

provide an invaluable service to our residents who find it difficult to go out for lunch or a coffee.

Policy of the Month!

Policy - Medication Management

Residents will be assisted to take prescribed medication safely. The level of assistance provided

will be dependant on the individual need of the client. Staff may only provide assistance with

medications within their scope of practice and level of competence.

Guidelines in relation to this policy can be found within our Policy Manual. Further information in

relation to medication management can be found in the Safety Handbook.

Joke of the Month

A rather old fashioned lady, always quite delicate and elegant, especially in her language, was

planning a weeks holiday in Sydney with her husband, so she wrote to a particular camping

ground and asked for a reservation.

She wanted to make sure that the camping ground was fully equipped, but didn’t know quite how

to ask about the toilet facilities. She just couldn’t bring herself to write the word “toilet” in her

letter. After much thought, she finally came up with the old fashioned term “Bathroom closet” but

when she wrote it down, she still thought she was being too forward, so she started all over

again, rewrote the letter, and referred to the bathroom closet as the B.C.

“Does the camping ground have it’s own B.C.” is what she wrote.

Well the camping ground owner wasn’t a bit old fashioned, and he just couldn’t figure out what

the old lady was talking about, so he showed the letter around a few of the campers and the only

thing they could come up with was that B.C. stood for Baptist Church, so he wrote the following

reply.

Dear Madam,

I regret very much the delay in answering your letter, but I now take the pleasure of informing you

that the B.C. is located nine miles north of our camping ground, and is capable of seating 250

people at one time.

I admit that it is quite a distance away if you are in the habit of going regularly but no doubt you

will be pleased to know that a great number of campers go there and many take their lunches

along and make a day of it. They usually arrive nice and early and stay quite late.

The last time my wife and I went was six years ago, and it was so crowded we had to stand up

the whole time we were there. It may interest you to know that there is a special supper planned

there to raise money to buy more seats so that everyone will be able to sit in comfort.

I would like to say that it pains me very much not to be able to go more regularly, but it is surely

no lack of desire on my part, just that I am so busy most of the time.

As we grow older, it seems to be more of an effort to go, especially in the cold weather. If you

decide to come down to our camping ground perhaps I could go with you the first time you go, sit

with you and introduce you to all the other folks.

Remember this is a very friendly community.
