Dear People of God, The February winds are howling and Spring seems so far off! Will it ever warm up? When do I get to stop lay-ering the clothes just to go to my car? How did our ancestors survive the weather with no electricity? These cold days of February need to remind all of us that we must take care of each other….help one another and may the following story “warm” your heart.

A mouse looked through the crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife open a package. "What food might this contain?" the mouse wondered. He was devastated to discover it was a mousetrap. Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse proclaimed the warning. "There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!" The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, "Mr. Mouse, I can tell this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me. I cannot be bothered by it." The mouse turned to the pig and told him, "There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!" The pig sympathized, but said, "I am so very sorry, Mr. Mouse, but there is nothing I can do about it but pray. Be assured, you are in my prayers." The mouse turned to the cow and said, "There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!" The cow said, "Wow, Mr. Mouse. I'm sorry for you, but it's no skin off my nose." So, the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the farmer's mousetrap alone. That very night a sound was heard throughout the house like the sound of a mousetrap catching its prey. The farmer's wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmer's wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital and she returned home with a fever. Everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup's main ingredient. But his wife's sickness continued, so friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig. The farmer's wife did not get well; she died. So many people came for her funeral, the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of them. The mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the wall with great sadness. So, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem and think it doesn't concern you, remember... when one of us is threatened, we are all at risk. We are all involved in this journey called life. We must keep an eye out for one another and make an extra effort to encourage one another.

And remember….each of us is a vital thread in another person’s tapestry. For we are the Body of Christ and our lives are woven together for a reason! These cold days can truly weigh us down so a hardy laugh is also marvelous for the soul.

A first grade school teacher in Virginia had twenty-five students in her class. She presented each child in her classroom the first half of a well known proverb and asked them to come up with the remainder of the proverb. It's hard to believe these were actually done by first graders. Their insight may surprise you. While reading, keep in mind that these are 6-year-olds, because some of these comments are classic! 1. Don't change horses …… until they stop running. 2. Strike while the …… bug is close. 3. It's always darkest before …… Daylight Saving Time. 4. You can lead a horse to water but …… How? 5. Don't bite the hand that …… looks dirty. 6. No news is …… impossible. 7. A miss is as good as a …… Mr. 8. If you lie down with dogs, you'll …… stink in the morning. 9. An idle mind is the best way to …… relax. 10. Where there's smoke there's …… pollution. 11. A penny saved is …...not much. 12. Two's company, three's …… The Musketeers.

Out of the mouths of babes come pearls of wisdom. God is Good!

Awaiting Spring with you,

Fr. Greg

Liturgical Bits & Bytes

Catholics Come Home …they left everything and followed him

The Gospel for today tells the story of how knowing Jesus and listening to his word has the power to change a life (Luke 5:1-11). In the Gospel we hear about the exhausted disciples, who after a full night of hard work caught nothing. We imagine their disbelief when Jesus tells them to go out fishing again and their astonishment with a huge catch of fish. In this moment, Simon Peter saw his life of sinfulness and the experience changed him forever. Jesus’ words had power to transform people in his lifetime and still the Word of God continues to transform lives for those who read, pray and study the Scriptures. Have you ever wondered about the origins of the Bible? Maybe you heard the line in one of the Catholics Come Home TV ads: “Guided by the Holy Spirit, we compiled the Bible.” The Bible as we know it today really began with the life and teachings of Jesus. The earliest followers of Jesus passed along stories by word-of-mouth and then later, they were written down by these people of faith. Pope Damasus (366-384 C.E) listed the books of today's canon, which was repeated by Pope Innocent I in 405 C.E. Then, in 393 C.E. the Council of Hippo created the list of the Old and New Testament books, which is the same as the Roman Catholic Church lists today. Through the Council of Florence in 1441 we receive the definitive list of canonical books. From the life of Jesus, to repeated stories to the written books of the Bible, the Word of God reaches us today. With Lent coming soon, find the time to read the Gospel of Luke and get to know Jesus better. His words still hold the power to change a life.

PLEASE JOIN US ON SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 14TH, FOR OUR OPEN HOUSE FROM 11:30 to 1:30 IN THE GYM MEETING ROOM.

EVERYONE IS INVITED TO JOIN IN THIS WELCOMING EVENT.

Please call the rectory to let us know you’re coming. Thank you! Marcy

Gospel Acclamation After the second reading and a brief period of silence, the cantor begins the Gospel Acclamation. During most of the year this is an “Alleluia,” a song of praise to greet the Lord present in the Good News. Alleluia is a joyful word of praise and is used throughout the year, except during Lent. During Lent the alleluia is suppressed. In a sense we fast from it throughout this season of preparation for Easter so that it may sound forth with renewed energy at Easter. Instead we sing, “Praise to you Lord, Jesus Christ, King of Endless Glory” or a similar acclamation of praise. The Gospel Acclamation is supposed to be sung. If it is not sung, it is to be omitted. When the Gospel Acclamation is begun, we all stand. We stand to honor Christ, whose Word is being proclaimed. We stand because that is the stance of being at attention and ready to respond to God’s Word. We stand in reverence and in praise and gratitude.

SEARCH FOR GOD — Part II

When: Tuesday, February 9th Time: 7:30 p.m.—-9:00 p.m. Where: Parish Hall Facilitator: Fr. Greg Topic: National Geographic Video — “Don’t Say Good-bye.”

Photographers Susan Middleton and David Liittschwager are in a race against the clock to capture powerful portraits of America’s most threatened creatures. Join them on this unforgettable adventure that takes them from the California Sierra to the deep South, from the woods of North Carolina to the Pacific’s shores. Along the way, they capture the beauty of golden trout and watch from a front row seat as a bald eagle chick is returned to its Cliffside nest. Their every picture tells a story...and makes a plea: DON’T SAY GOOD-BYE to America’s natural treasures. Are we destroying God’s home and the creatures which occupy our earth?

Come & discuss the novel The Shack with Father Kurt

A few weeks back, a handful of parishioners invited me to read the critically acclaimed novel The Shack by Wm. Paul Young. They also said, if I was touched by the story, they would like to have a discussion with me about it. To that end, I would like to invite anyone interested in doing so, to join me for a discussion on The Shack, Tuesday, March 9th, at 7:30 pm at Jubilee House. I would ask that you read this challenging and inspiring story be-fore that night. The book is available at any local book-store. The Shack has sold over 7 million copies and has been #1 on the New York Times Bestseller’s List. Some comments from those who have already read this story: “This book will change the way you think about God for-ever.” “Brilliant! One of the most faith-enhancing books I have ever read.” “I can’t remember the last time a book, let alone a work of fiction, had this much of a healing im-pact on my life.” All are welcome on Tuesday, March 9th at 7:30 pm at Jubilee House to join in the discussion. Peace, Father Kurt.
