OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE Behind the miraculous appearance and icon that define Our Lady of Guadalupe is a story of persistence and courage. When Our Lady appeared to Juan Diego, she sent him to the bishop to request that a church be built. Juan Diego, an indigenous peasant farmer, had no sta-tus, power, or influence with which to impress the bishop, yet he followed Our Lady’s request. Risking rejection or even ridicule, he returned twice with his amazing story of the vision. With the blooming flowers packed in his tilma (poncho), and the miraculous icon that emerged beneath them, Our Lady helped Juan Diego make his point. The story teaches us trust and the certainty that, when God calls us to proclaim his Kingdom, we are surrounded by the grace we need to see our mission through. May we persist in sharing the Good News, even in the face of great challenges. (2016 Sourcebook pg. 20

ST. DAMASUS I St. Damasus I reigned as pope for twenty-four years. He is remembered for revitalizing devotion to the relics of martyrs by adorning catacombs, building churches, mak-ing shrines more accessible, and marking the resting places of the martyrs with unique inscriptions and epi-grams. (2016 Sourcebook pg. 20)

TRANSISTION OF A CHRISTIAN LIFE A Catholic funeral liturgy planning workshop, sponsored by Associated Catholic Cemeteries and the Archdiocese of Seattle, will be facilitated by Greg Simard at St. Bene-dict Church after the evening Mass (6:30 PM) on Wednesday night December 16

th. Please come to find

out everything you always want to know but are afraid to ask about the church’s teaching, liturgy, cemetery tradi-tion, cremation and burial options.

ST. JOHN Most notably, St. John (267 - 749) is remembered for his avid defense of the use of sacred art in churches, monas-teries, and homes against iconoclasm which sought to destroy all images of devotion, resulting from the misinter-pretation on the part of the emperor and many others that Christians were using sacred art as a means of idol wor-ship. St. John composed three treatises with the goal of lifting up images of Christ, the saints, and Mary as a door-way to the mystery of God’s saving work. (2016 Source-book pg. 17)

CHRISTMAS CONCERT WITH THE CHOIRS OF ST. ANNE AND ST. BENEDICT

Mark your calendars: on December 19th and 20th the combined choirs of St. Benedict and St. Anne Parishes, along with some friends from Assumption Parish, will be giving a Christmas con-cert. Please come and enjoy, there are no tickets, no free-will of-fering, it's all just a Christmas present from the choirs to you. Sat-urday, December 19

th the concert will be in St. Benedict Church at

7:30 PM and Sunday, December 20th we will be at St. Anne

Church at 4:30 PM. The address for St. Anne is 1411 1st Ave West, 98119, on Queen Anne Hill between Galer and Lee.

Sisters and brothers in Christ:

If you weren’t at our 10 AM Mass last Sunday, you missed a great celebration of First Communion for four young women in the parish. Anabel Alfarozierten, Mathilde Vega, Drew Sheppard and Jensen Sheppard stepped up in the last few months to prepare for and receive the Eucharist for the first time. They are all in local area schools and are beyond 2nd grade so we fast tracked their catechesis. Mathilde even joined the Church fully when she made a profession of Faith for the first time. She and her family are all joining the Church this year from their devout Lutheran faith experience. Please join me in congratulating these four wonderful young women. And if you know of anyone, adult or young person, who has not been fully initiated into the Church, please contact me and let’s discuss the options.

Also, in response to the Engaged Church survey that many completed in late spring, we are continuing to seek more ways to feed our parish spiritually. For adults, we have copies of “The Word Among Us” and the Year of Mercy Spiritual Companion from Magnificat available in the vestibule. Please pray with these resources in the coming year beginning this week. When they are all gone, we will order more. And for young people, we have copies of “Magnifikid” which is a weekly publication packaged by month available so you can use this at home to enrich your children’s understanding of the weekly readings. And for the youngest of our Parish (or the child within) you will find special coloring sheets beauti-fully drawn and donated by Kathleen Toliver, sister of parishioner Mary Anne Reynolds. The drawings cover each week of the Gospel and will aide the parent in engaging their children to learn more about the Gospel as they color. This year covers St. Luke’s Gospel for Year C. All of these wonderful prayer, teaching and engagement tools are available in the vestibule at no charge. Please use them.

If you have any other suggestions for strengthening spiritual growth for everyone, please send them to me! Blessings for Advent to you all. Your servant,

Deacon Roy

PEACEFUL CRAFTERS The Peaceful Crafters would like to thank all that have generously donated items for their “Boxes of Joy” this year. On Thursday morning they gathered to complete the process of putting all items together in preparation for delivery to the are women’s shelters. If you would like to be a part of helping them deliver the boxes, call the parish office at 206-632-0843 and leave a message that you would like to take that last step with them. They would love the help and to have you join them each Thursday morning.

ST. MARTIN de PORRES The SMdP ministry group meets on the first and third Monday mornings of each month to make sandwiches for 225 homeless men, and is seeking volunteers to help with set up and clean up of the sandwich making process. This involves a time commitment of between 2-3 hours each session but it is not necessary to be there every time as there is currently one active person for this. It would be great to have back up for this position in case of sick chil-dren or travel, etc. If interested please contact either Becky Ortiz ([email protected]) or Andrea Vaught ([email protected]). Thank you !!
