1) Add a new course, CDS 897, to the curriculum and drop SED 897 from the CD curriculum. 2) Modify Admission Requirements. 3) Add probation and progress policy to the Program Requirements. 4) Modify and clarify Program Requirements. 5) Clarify Exit Requirements.

B. The justification for this action: 1) All graduate students pursuing a master’s degree in Communication Disorders (CD) are required to

complete a semester of student teaching. Currently, students register for SED 897. However, there is confusion as to which section of SED 897 the CD majors are to complete. Therefore, adding this new course in student teaching which is for CD majors only will clearly assist both the students in registering for the correct section and the College of Education Office of Student Teaching in identifying the CD students.

2) EPSB is requiring minimum GRE scores for admission to initial teacher certification programs. These new

requirements are reflected in this proposed program change. 3) The Council on Academic Accreditation for Speech-Language Pathology requires that a program verify a

candidate’s mastery of knowledge and skills across all content and clinical courses in the program. In addition, the Graduate School expects candidates to maintain an average GPA of 3.0 or higher. Therefore, a probation and progress policy is needed to clarify continuation in or dismissal from the program.

4) Candidates write thesis proposals and are invited by a faculty committee to complete a thesis. Changing the wording clarifies that faculty invite candidates instead of the candidate making the choice. In addition, candidates, who complete their bachelor’s degree at different universities, may not have completed courses required for a Kentucky teaching certificate, Kentucky licensure, or certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. A statement is needed to clarify to those applying that there are certain courses which need to be taken. These courses (e.g., SED 800) can count toward one of the three electives required for the degree.

5) Clarification of the Exit Requirements is needed to include the GRD numbers for tracking these requirements in Degreeworks and for removing the oral examination from the comprehensive examination process.

Professional Track for the B.A. in General Studies CIP Code: 24.0102

The Professional Track for the B.A. in General Studies degree program is offered through the Eastern Kentucky University/Morehead State University collaborative baccalaureate pathway. This collaborative program is designed to provides a baccalaureate degree opportunity for students place-bound in the Lancaster/Hazard/Jackson/Manchester region of Kentucky in General Studies seeking professional skills to improve their prospects for employment and advancement. At least 18 hours of the curriculum for this concentration will be courses cross listed in both the Eastern Kentucky University and Morehead State University schedule of classes. The Professional Track incorporates upper-level courses from a variety of disciplines, allowing students considerable flexibility to focus on particular areas of interest within the concentration. Students interested in pursuing this degree through EKU should contact Terry Gray, Director of the EKU Manchester Regional Campus.

A. 1. Specific action requested: To revise curriculum to reflect new general education requirements and the modifications to the existing requirements based on a review of the curriculum during general education revision. Will add one general education course to support courses; will drop other support to maintain program at 120-121 hours.

A. 2. Effective date: Fall 2012

A. 3. Effective date of suspended programs for currently enrolled students: (if applicable)

B. The justification for this action:

The curriculum needed to be revised based on the new general education. With addition of history course requirement, will need to drop social science support and PSY 280 support to keep program at 120-121 hours, but will keep PSY 200. Will add MAT 105 as a support course to ensure students obtain the minimum grade of “C” for all support courses. This support will not add to program hours, as it is also a gen ed requirement. Students who do not obtain at least a grade of “C” in Mat 105 do poorly on the dosage calculation requirements in the program, so adding as support will emphasize the importance of the course and encourage higher grade achievement..

A. 1. Specific action requested: To revise the general education requirements to reflect the new EKU general education requirements. Will drop support courses of BIO 171 and BIO 301, as these no longer are approved for general education requirements. Request to keep NSC 486 as meeting the wellness requirement; this course was approved for wellness for general education and the department is requesting to keep the course for wellness with the wellness being moved to university requirement. Also, we are changing the wording on RN license requirements.

A. 2. Effective date: Fall 2012

A. 3. Effective date of suspended programs for currently enrolled students: (if applicable)

B. The justification for this action: Program needs to reflect new general education requirements. RNs still take BIO 171 or 301 or equivalents as part of their associate degree program. As these no longer are part of general education, dropping these courses as support courses will eliminate problems with transfer of some similar courses and the need to request an exception for Degree Works. RN students from EKU and transfer students will now need to complete the regular EKU general education program. For the wellness requirement, the NSC 486 course was submitted, reviewed, and approved to meet the wellness requirement when it was under general education, although it is a major course and not on the list of general education courses open to all students. The general education committee reviewed and approved the student learning objectives and other material submitted by Dr. Schlomann, course faculty and former general education committee member. As the wellness component learning objectives were reviewed and approved for wellness when it was a general education requirement, the department believes the wellness approval should be extended to the university requirement. The department was directed to C.A.A. for approval of this request for the university requirement. The wording suggested by the Kentucky Board of Nursing and used with our graduate programs is being revised for consistency for the RN-BSN.

1) The addition of CDF 147, Role of EC Educator, will provide the students with foundational knowledge regarding the discipline and the program area to assist them in further course work. The addition of CDF 310, Observation & Assessment in ECE, will provide a focus on observation & assessment. CDF 363, Early Childhood Literacy, will provide students with concentrated content in literacy development and curriculum. CDF 399, Early Childhood Practicum, will give students up to 6 credit hours of additional field experience prior to enrolling in student teaching and practicum.

2) All child and family study students need to take CDF 538, Research Methods, to have a better understanding for and experience with current research.

3) In an effort to increase student academic preparedness and success, admission requirements are necessary. It has been the observation of the faculty that students with lower ACT scores and GPA’s have a difficult time applying theory to practice and interpreting what they observe in a developmental context. IECE students already have requirements for admission to teacher education; therefore instituting requirements in Child and Family Studies would provide continuity between the programs.

4) Students need more options for supporting courses. PSY 577 The Autism Spectrum will provide students with information regarding children with autism and working with their families and SWK 440 Addictions will give students information on addictions and the impact on families. Supporting courses are traditionally offered in the evening for Juniors and Seniors. Time conflicts and closed sections result in registration issues. The addition of two optional supporting courses should lessen this problem.

5) For the Family Studies supporting courses, students will choose between SWK 456 Services for Children and SWK 457 Services for the Elderly. This enables students to focus on a generational group through the supporting course requirement.

6) CDF 299 Case Study: Observational Assessment was intended for transfer students needing observation hours but there has never been a need to teach this course. CDF 344 Program Planning for infants and Toddlers and CDF 343 Program Planning for Preschool Children are being retooled as CDF 405 Program Planning for Infants and Toddlers and CDF 406 Program Planning for Preschool Children. Content from CDF 346 Play-Based Assessment for Early Childhood Program Planning will be included in CDF 310 Observation and Assessment in ECE.

7) CSC 104 and CIS 212 are removed from the supporting course requirements because most students now have some proficiency with computers. In addition, computer applications relevant to early childhood are taught in required classes in the major and options.

8) For the Child Development option, SED 504 Assistive/Adaptive Technology is dropped as a supporting course requirement. The remaining course, SED 518 Special Education in Early Childhood in combination with other courses chosen from the list better meet the needs of those in early childhood.

9) The state of Kentucky enacted legislation requiring 200 field hours of all education majors prior to student teaching. The College of Education has created a system to track and report hours through Cooperative Education which will be used to report to the Education Professional Standards Board.

Catalog 2011/2012

Child and Family Studies (B.S.) Area Major CIP Code: 19.0701

New or Revised* Program Text Program Objectives Upon completion of a degree in Child and Family Studies graduates will be able to: 1) assess developmental, political, social, cultural, economic and technological influences on the well-being and diversity of individuals, families and communities; 2) design and implement a range of services for individuals, children and families; 3) utilize and interpret appropriate individual, family and program evaluation measures; 4) access community resources and collaborate with community agencies/services; and 5) evaluate and monitor their professional development. The Child Development option prepares graduates to teach or direct in any private early childhood program (birth to five). Graduates may also be employed as a trainer for resource and referral agencies or serve as Education Coordinator in private early childhood facilities. The Family Studies option prepares graduates to work with individuals and families in a variety of social service settings. Positions are available in family resource centers, community agencies, profit and non-profit organizations that provide services for children, youth, adults and families. The Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education option leads graduates to Kentucky public school certification for teaching children birth through age five. Graduates learn to prepare individual education plans for children who experience developmental delays and support plans to assist families of those children. IECE majors will teach in private agencies serving infants to two years and public school settings (Pre-K, three and four year olds, and kindergarten not connected with primary programs for first through third grade). To be granted a degree in Child and Family Studies students must have a “C” or better in all CDF and supporting courses. Admission and Progression Requirements for Child & Family Studies Options Child Development and IECE All students who are accepted by EKU’s Admissions Office and declare their major as Child and Family Studies are admitted to the University as pre-Child and Family Studies majors. However, admission to the pre- Child and Family Studies program does not guarantee admission to the Child and Family Studies program. To be admitted to the Child and Family Studies program the following criteria must be met: 1) Minimum of 45 hours with a 2.75 overall GPA and an ACT 18 or 3.2 overall GPA and an ACT 17 and 2) GPA of 3.0 in the following courses CDF 147, 235, 236, 246, 310 with a grade of “C” or better in each course Once these requirements have been met, the student must apply to the Child and Family Studies Program Director for a change from the pre- Child and Family Studies program to the Child and Family Studies program.

Minor in Chemistry

A student may minor in chemistry by completing CHE 111, 111L, CHE 112, 112L or 112HL, 361, and 361L, plus an additional 12 hours of upper division chemistry any two additional courses* from the following list: CHE 325 (co-requisite CHE 325L), 362 (co-requisite CHE 362L), 430, 431, 450, 470, 501, 520, and FOR 440. Minor in Chemistry (Teaching)

A student may obtain a teaching minor in chemistry by completing CHE 111, 111L, CHE 112, 112L or 112HL plus an additional 12 credits of upper division chemistry. [NOTE: Given the scope of the required PRAXIS exam that must be passed for a certificate extension in chemistry, the following courses are particularly recommended for students seeking a teaching minor in chemistry: CHE 325, 330, 361/361L, and 470.] Students may seek a minor in chemistry in conjunction with the completion of a teaching certificate**, which will qualify them to teach chemistry at the secondary level. The teaching minor in chemistry must be coupled with a secondary teaching certificate in another discipline. For students with a middle school science emphasis, requirements are met. Students enrolled in a teaching program other than science who desire teaching certification in chemistry will be required to take ESE 561. The minor will be considered an add-on certificate and cannot be recommended until the secondary teaching program is completed and a recommendation for certification has been processed. Appropriate praxis exams must be completed for each area of certification being recommended. *See Course Descriptions for prerequisite and corequisite requirements. **Candidates earning a degree that leads to teacher certification must take the PRAXIS Series (Professional Assessments for Beginning Teachers) and PLT (Principles of Learning and Teaching) exams as a requirement for graduation. Candidates are encouraged to review the schedule for PRAXIS and PLT registration deadlines prior to beginning the senior year (http://www.kyepsb.net/assessment/index.asp AND www.ets.org/praxis). Specialty exams are required for each certification area sought and it may take more than one test date to complete all requirements. Candidates should confer with their education advisor/counselor to determine the most optimal time to take required exams.
