European emissions, Saharan dust and biomass burning) above the boundary layer Characterize mixing between the free troposphere and boundary layer. Study the evolution of aerosol during transport Total Particle Concentrations 5 min avg Dust event Southerly wind high Ca 2+ Dust + Wave Westerly wind high Ca 2+ high Na + Calm event Northerly wind 24 June 2013 MSG / SEVIRI FLEXPART Optical Particle Counters (Dp > 0.3 m) 5 min resolution CalmDust + Waves Dust 4 July 2013 MSG / SEVIRI FLEXPART 10 July 2013 MSG / SEVIRI FLEXPART OPC ( D p > 1 m ) - 5 min resolution CalmDust + Waves Dust 16 June 2013 MSG / SEVIRI FLEXPART Aethelometer (Black Carbon) 10 July 2013 MSG / SEVIRI FLEXPART MAAP: LSCE Preliminary results Identified dust events, emissions from continental Europe, and biomass burning. Observations at both sites show similar trends; yet with differences that still need to be explored. Strong diurnal variations at Pinerole transitions between boundary layer and free troposphere Dust events show higher concentrations in free troposphere (esp. 1 um) Transport of black carbon from Europe and biomass burning concentrations higher in boundary layer Monte Pinerole PACMEx Site Data Collection Timeline at Pinerole
