THE SYLVAN APPROACH TO

SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATION

The Sylvan model of supplemental education and tutoring is a proven, research-based methodology that includes a skills assessment, highly qualified teachers, individualized learning, customized learning plans, and years of practical results.

When students come to a Sylvan Learning Center, they are given the Sylvan Skills Assessment® - a unique combination of nationally recognized tests. Based on the results, Sylvan’s education experts create a program for each student based on his or her individual needs. Students receive one-on-one instruction from their instructors and also benefit from independent study and peer interaction. Our Mastery Learning method enables children to master a subject by building on what they’ve already learned. Finally, our unique motivational program and positive reinforcement help students discover that learning is not only rewarding, but fun, too.

Parent-teacher conferences are animportant part of a child’s education. They give parents an opportunity todiscuss with teachers the progresstheir kids are making in the class-room, as well as the challenges theyface. The following are tips for making themost out of the experience:

CONFERENCE TIPSTen tips for a successful parent-teacher conference:

1. Ask your child if there is anythingthat he would like you to discuss withthe teacher.2. Jot down everything that you wantto talk about at the conference.3. Arrive promptly or a few minutesearly.4. Begin with positive commentsabout the teacher or classroom.5. Avoid lengthy discussions of top-ics that are not related to the purposeof the conference.6. Be open-minded to suggestionsfrom the teacher.7. Keep your emotions under con-trol.8. Take notes about what has beendiscussed to share with your child.9. Express appreciation for the con-ference.10. Do not stay beyond your allottedtime.

A QUICK GUIDEMore tips about what to do during aparent-teacher conference, provid-ed by the National Parent TeacherAssociation:

DURING THE CONFERENCE4 Establish rapport: As an icebreak-er, take notice of something that re-flects well upon the teacher. For ex-ample, thank the teacher for havingmade thoughtful notes on your child’shomework or for the special attentionin helping your child learn to multi-ply.4 Ask questions: Questions you askduring the conference can help you

express your hopes for the student’ssuccess in class and for the teacher. It’s a good idea to ask the importantquestions first, in case time runs out.The teacher’s answers should helpyou both work together to help yourchild.4 If your child receives special serv-ices (e.g., gifted and talented pro-grams, speech or occupational ther-apy), be sure to ask about the fre-quency of services and your child’sprogress.4 Addressing problems: Parent-teacher conferences are a good timeto discuss any difficulties (either ac-ademic or behavioral) a child mightbe having at school. When problems

arise, parents will want to:

1. Avoid angry or apologetic reac-tions. Instead, ask for examples.2. Ask what is being done about theproblem and what strategies seem tohelp at school.3. Develop an action plan that mayinclude steps that parents can takeat home and steps the teacher willtake when the problem comes up atschool.4. Schedule a follow-up conferenceand decide on the best way to stayin touch (phone, e-mail, or letterssent to the home).

4 Develop an action plan: If the stu-dent needs help with a behavioral oran academic issue, you and theteacher should agree on specific

plans — that you both will work on— to help your child do better. Besure you understand what theteacher suggests. If it’s not clear, askhim or her to explain. Set up a wayto check on your child’s progress. You and the teacher can decide howbest to stay in touch, such as throughphone calls, notes, or additionalmeetings.l Ending the conference: End the con-ference by reviewing what you dis-cussed and restating your actionplan. This is also a good time to setup your next meeting.

AFTER THE CONFERENCE4 When discussing the conferencewith the child afterward, stress the

good things that were covered and bedirect about problems that were iden-tified.4 If an action plan is in place, explainto the child what was arranged.4 When an action plan is in place, consider the following: Watch yourchild’s behavior and check on class-work and homework. Ask how thestudent feels about schoolwork. Stayin touch with the teacher to discussyour child’s progress. Express appre-ciation as progress is made. A goodway to promote a continuing rela-tionship with the teacher is to say“thank you” with a note or a tele-phone call.4 Continuing to keep in touch withthe teacher, even if things are goingwell, can play an important role inhelping the child do better in school.4 When a child knows parents andteachers are regularly working to-gether, the child will see that educa-tion is a high priority requiring com-mitment and effort.

QUESTIONS TO ASK4 In what subjects/activities doesmy child show the most interest?4 Does my child participate in classdiscussions?4 How often do you assign home-work?4How should I help with homework?4 How do you track my child’sprogress?4Does my child work well independ-ently? Does he succeed in a groupsituation?4 Does my child have friends in theclass? Does he get along well withadults?4 If my child has academic difficul-ties, is there help provided by theschool?4 How can I help enhance my child’seducation at home?4 How do I stay in touch with you?Keep the lines of communicationopen long after the conference.

Here are some health tips provided by GuamPublic School System nurses for parents:

l The responsibility of your child’s healthlies with you

l If your child has symptoms of any illnesstake him to the family doctor.

l If your child is complaining of aheadache, stomachache or other symptomsof illness, the rule of thumb is to keep yourchild at home.

l Be sure the school has accurate emer-gency numbers so you can be contacted incase of an emergency.

l The school nurse, in most cases, is al-lowed to administer fever/pain-reducing med-ication, but always talk to the school nurse be-fore sending your child to school with medica-tion – even if your child has only a slight fever.

l You must provide the school nurse withwritten consent to administer any medication.

l If you suspect your child is using an ill-ness to avoid going to school, talk to yourchild’s teacher for possible reasons and solu-tions.

l Be sure that your child’s immunizationrecords are up to date.

l A flu shot can help reduce the severityof flu or even help your child avoid the flu.

l If your child is sick, call the teacher andpick up his assignments so he doesn’t fall be-hind in class.

Sending your child homeYour child may be sent home if they have: lGastro intestinal problems such as vom-

iting or diarrhea l Pinkeye – also known as conjunctivitis,

which is an inflammation of the clear mem-brane that covers the whites in the eyes. If youthink your child may have pinkeye, observeany swelling of the eye overnight and if it’sclear by morning, it may have been an allergicreaction. If it’s still red with discharge, takeyour child to see the family doctor.

l Head lice – also known as pediculosis. These tiny parasites lay eggs in hair and sucksmall amounts of blood. Treatments includeover-the-counter lice treatment shampoo andremoval of lice with a fine-tooth comb. Gener-ally, schools will give a child several days offto treat the condition.

l Rashes – If a child is sent home with anunusual rash, parents may need medical clear-ance to return the child back to school, espe-cially if the rash is impetigo, also known asGuam sores, which requires treatment.
