President’s Report
April 2016 Steve McCombs—KY Region President
Wow, Spring is really here and we have an out-standing list of events planned. Both T.H. and
Edward have gone out of their way to put to-gether a fun and interesting list of drives and events for this 2016 calendar. I just want to
thank them for spending the time and effort to put this list together and especially for taking their personal time away from their families to
head up these drives each month. Next month is our Spring DE and by the time this letter is read by each of you the event just may be completely filled up. But check anyway. It’s always a great
time, whether it’s your first time or 100th time. The fun, food, driving experience and friendship is second to none. There are 71 Regions across
the country that hold DE events each year and the numbers are growing. And I would put ours up against anyone’s as the best. And as always,
we want to deeply thank Bluegrass Motorsports Porsche Dealership, Randy Biery and the entire Bluegrass team for their continued support.
On March 19th I attended the Zone 13 Presi-dent’s meeting in Springfield, IL. Caren Cooper (National President) and Greg Halverson
(National Tour Director) attended. The theme of the meeting was to review National changes and to review each Region’s successes and challeng-
es. I do have to say after attending several of these meetings in the past this was the best and most informative meeting ever.
I want to take a few minutes to highlight items concerning National and the behind-the-scenes actions that go on with PCA North America.
Hopefully you’ll find this of interest. What is the PCA 10 year Plan:
- To provide a professional evolution of the National Office to support the growth and expansion of the Club. (By 2020 PCA will
have 100,000 members with an opera-tional budget of $10 million.)
- Communications in all directions to be
consistence. And using all forms of digital communications with a common look and style including all printed forms as well. Hiring professionals in these areas for
support of these efforts. (i.e. the Panorama chief editor and publisher was Excellent Magazine edi-
tor. He now works for PCA with 6 other profes-sionals.)
- Dealing with the Club’s aging membership.
(More then 60% of the membership is over 55yrs of age.) Plans to bring new, younger peo-ple to become members and developing plan of
getting them involved. Other bits of information:
Porsche Club of America, as of the end of 2015, has 73,000 members.
144 Regions have an annual budget of $8.4 million. On average 60% of all new members sign up online. The National office has 14 employees and will be expanding
within the next several years requiring more office space. (That’s why they are purchasing additional offic-es next door to the existing PCA office condo.)
The Raffles: They are a PCA event but is not PCA budg-eted. It is held solely on its own merits. If the Raffles were stopped today it would not affect the running of
PCA at all. Cars are not purchased until the money is in hand. So if they over sell they add additional cars. That is why there were 6 cars given away in 2015. These
Raffles are a big success and will continue with special cars being put together by Porsche AG for these Raffles. All extra moneys are going back to each Region in
forms of rebates. One other note: the younger generation uses Twitter and the newer forms of instant communications. They
consider Facebook for old people and email is seldom used if at all by them. The newest members found out about PCA through friends. So it is very important that
we all represent the Club is a favorable light when you meet other Porsche owners and encourage them to join.
PCA is growing and is one of the largest car clubs in the world. We should be proud of the Club and the people
who run the operation because 90% of them are volun-teers. If there is anything you would like to see or do here in the Kentucky Region please let us know so we can help make this your club and one that’s worth be-
longing to. That’s all for now, see you at the next meeting.

Wine Tasting Social—RSVP Now!!!!!
Based on past success, the third annual Wine Tasting Party is on for Saturday, May21st from 6:30-10PM at the Galownia resi-dence in New Albany, Indiana. It
will be a great time to socialize and meet other club members and enjoy great food and spirits. The format for the wine tasting is structured so that everyone will
get to taste many different wines. Each person (or couple) is to bring TWO bottles of the SAME wine. Price point is $10-25. For the tasting, one bottle of each wine will be opened for those attending to sample/taste. The second bottle will remain in reserve unopened. After dinner, the names of those attending will go into a hat for a drawing. Luck of the
draw, each name is pulled and that person (or couple) gets to select from the uno-pened bottles as to which bottle they want to take home. For dinner, the club will furnish a nice selection of cheeses during the tasting, and grilled steaks, vegetables and some desserts afterwards.
If you wish to attend this great event, RSVP to Joe Galownia by Tuesday, May 17th via e-mail at: mailto:[email protected]. Phone is 502-836-4272 if you have any questions. This is a reservation-only RSVP required party to allow for proper supplies and food. There is ample safe parking, so bring your Porsche. Ad-dress is: 3008 Wolf Lake Blvd, New Albany, IN 47150. Rain or shine, looking for-ward to seeing you there!

From the Editor’s Desk By Belinda Schweinhart
I was already looking for-ward to watching the upcoming
Captain America: Civil War movie but now I need to watch it twice: once for the storyline and once for
the background. (No, I can’t do both at the same time!) From The Courier-Journal,
Sunday May 1, 2016 page 1U: “The ultra-modern Porsche building outside downtown Atlanta has been turned into the headquarters
of Earth’s mightiest heroes on the set of the new Marvel movie Cap-tain America: Civil War (in theaters
Friday)…..” Has anyone visited this building yet? It would be interest-
ing to hear what you thought of the building and why they chose it for this movie. Someone let me
know!!!
Good evening everyone,
We have created a new way to share information with you about all of the planned activities for the club. This will be in addition to the other tools we already use such as email announcements, the website and the monthly editions of the Pacesetter. A new page has been created on Facebook that
is dedicated to activities and events. This page will be accessible only to club members and will con-tain detailed information about each planned activity, including dates, times, maps, and activity over-view. Your use of this page also helps me see how many people are interested in each planned event as
you are able to indicate that you are going, might be going, or will not be going. If you are already on Facebook and would like access to the page, please let me know and I will get you added. By design, it will not show up in a Facebook search and you have to be explicitly
added to the group in order to see and receive page updates. I will just need your Facebook page name to get you added. If you are not currently on Facebook, I invite you to give it a try as it is a very power-ful and convenient tool for communication. If you aren't sure how to get started, let me know and I
would be glad to try and help. Facebook interaction can be as little or as much as you wish. Thanks! I look forward to seeing you on many of our outings! As usual, if there are things that Edward
and I can do to make the outings more meaningful to you, please don't hesitate to drop us a note. We are always looking for new ideas.
Regards, T.H. Morris mailto:[email protected]

WAIVERS REQUIRED FOR MINOR PARTICIPANTS
**Important update for those planning on attending club activities with their underage family members**
We are excited to offer a variety of activities to club members. Occasionally, minors attend these events and this is good to see because it is important that we continue the family friendly culture. We are all well
accustomed to signing the waiver supplied by PCA national immediately prior to departing on our drives. We also have forms specifically addressing the participation by minors. In the past, we have been able to utilize the single signature of the guardian/parent attending the event but this is no longer the
case. A recent development has led the insurance company to state that unless both guardians/parents of the minor sign the waiver, then neither the adult attendee or the minor attendee are covered by insur-
ance. If you plan to bring your under the age of 18 family members along, please print off the waiver and have both parents sign the document and bring it along with you to the activity. A link to the waiver form
is included below.

Published in the April 2016 issue of “Die Porsche Kassette”
In 1492 Christopher Columbus
sailed west from Europe to what
many considered the edge of the
world, but he didn’t fall off. Neither
did Ferdinand Magellan some 27
years later when he set off to
circumnavigate the world and
although he died
before finishing, his crew sailed on
and proved that it was round. That belief was
held for another 429 years until another
Ferdinand set out to prove Magellan and his crew
wrong. That other Ferdinand was Herr Porsche
who in 1948 in the small Austrian town of
Gmund, put a flat-4 engine in the middle of the
now legendary Porsche 356 #1.
From that day on ...
But, what is a flat engine and more
importantly why is it flat?
A flat engine, or a horizontally opposed engine
has its cylinders arranged horizontally in 2
banks therefore making it literally flat, as
compared to the more common “V” or
“vertical inline” types of engines. The flat
engine layout has several advantages for a
sports car over the conventional
designs:
● It occupies less vertical space
allowing the car to have a lower
profile
●It can be placed lower in the car
thus lowering the center of
gravity
●It is a very balanced (vibration-free) design
because of the opposing motion
●It is easier to “air” cool
●It has lower rotational inertia (less weight on the
crank) and less power loss
Initially, Herr Porsche used flat-fours, borrowed
from Volkswagen (also his design) and put them
into the 356 and then into the 912 models.
But, in 1963 Porsche decided that his cars needed
more power so the first flat-six went into
the now iconic 911. It started out as a 2.0
liter, normally aspirated, air-cooled engine,
which went through a myriad of changes,
modifications and improvements throughout
the years. On some of those flat-6s, stating
“Porsche amplifies the sound by using a resonator and an electric valve which pumps the sound into the cabin.”
PaceSetter May 2016 Page 31
in 1975, Porsche also installed turbochargers.
In 1996 Porsches’s flat-6 engine got water-cooled
and went into their brand new mid-engined
platform, the 986 Boxster, as a 2.5 liter, normally
aspirated power plant.
In 1999 a 3.4 liter version of that engine went
into the first water-cooled 911, even though the
previous two platforms of the air cooled 911s had
sported displacements of 3.6 liters (964 and 993).
Flat-6s with 3.8 liters were used in some of the
“S” platforms, and on some high-performance
models (997 GT3 RSR and 997 GT3 Cup) the
displacement eventually went as high as 4.0 liters
which is what the factory claims is the largest
displacement possible while maintaining optimum
efficiency, power output and ease of cooling.
Aside from the flat-4 and flat-6 engines Porsche
also built several other flat power plants,
exclusively for racing:
1.5L and 2.0L flat-8 in the 718 (1961 and 1962)
2.0L and 2.2L flat-8 in the 907 (1967)
3.0L flat 8 in the 908 (1968)
4.5L flat-12 in the 917 (1969)
5.0L flat-12 in the 917 (1970)
5.4L flat-12 Twin-Turbo in the 1973 Can-Am
917/30 with the following specs:
1,580 HP
0-60 mph in 2.1 seconds
0-100 in 3.9 seconds
0-200 in 13.4 seconds
Top speed in excess of 240 mph
And even though Porsche made earth-shattering changes for 2017 by announcing that it was eliminating the normally-aspirated flat-6 engines
in both the Boxster and Cayman platforms and exclusively offering 4-cylinder [gasp!] turbocharged engines ... ... at least they’re keeping them flat! ...
... and now we wonder what will they sound like?
In order to make them sound more like a Porsche
and less like a Subaru Sti flat-4, Porsche amplifies
the sound by using a resonator and an electric
valve which pumps the sound into the cabin. At
least it’s real sound, albeit amplified, and not a
fake engine sound track through the car’s
speakers as some other manufacturers such as
VW with the GTI and BMW with the M5 have
done :(
These new blown flat-4s are being offered with
gobs of power and torque, but ...
