INTRODUCTION TO THE INDUSTRY

•Paan is a compound of natural substances chewed for its psychstimulating effects.

• Betel is composed of the nut of the areca palm (Areca catechu), theleaf of the betel pepper (Piper betel), and lime (calcium hydroxide).

• Approximately 200 million persons chew betel regularlythroughout the western Pacific basin and south Asia.

• When betel is chewed, it produces mild psychoactive andcholinergic effects.

• There is copious production of blood-red saliva that can stain oralstructures.

INTRODUCTION TO THE INDUSTRY (contd.)

•After years of chewing, the teeth may become red-brown to nearlyblack.

• Betel use is associated with oral leukoplakia, submucous fibrosis, and

squamous cell carcinoma.

• Examples of paan's numerous variations are:

Tambaku paan

Paan supari / paan masala / sada paan

Meetha paan / sweet paan

Trento / olarno paan

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY-• The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the World

Health Organization (WHO) accept the scientific evidence that chewing

betel quids and areca nut is carcinogenic to humans.

• 30 scientists from 10 countries reported there is sufficient evidence

that paan chewing, even without tobacco, leads to tumours in the oral

cavity and oesophagus.

These findings led us to conduct a study of the people of Mahmoorganjlocality in Varanasi so as to find the implications of paan and whether it

has any effect on the health of people.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

TYPE OF RESEARCH-• The type of research done for the topic is Descriptive Research, also called

Statistical Research.

• The main goal of this type of research is to describe the data and

characteristics about what is being studied.

• Although this research is highly accurate, it does not gather the causes

behind a situation.

• Descriptive research is the exploration of the existing certain phenomena.

The details of the facts won’t be known. The existing phenomena’s facts

are not known to the persons.

SAMPLE SIZE AND

METHOD OF SELECTING SAMPLE

• The sample size for the research is 30 which has been decided on the basis

of feasibility and the locality in which survey was done.

• The sampling method used in this research is Purposive Sampling.

• Purposive sampling represents a group of different non-probability

sampling techniques.

• Purposive sampling relies on the judgement of the researcher when itcomes to selecting the units that are to be studied.

• Usually, the sample being investigated is quite small, especially when

compared with probability sampling techniques.

ANALYSIS & INTERPRETATION

7/30/2019 Paan Consumption

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/paan-consumption 8/13

We can easily observe that those who feel restless without consuming

paan or who consume it on a regular basis suffer from tooth problem.

Relation Between people who know tobacco

causes cancer and what they say about quitting

55.6% of respondent who says tobacco causes cancer says yes to quitting where as

87.5% of respondent who do not know tobacco causes cancer says no to quitting.

Relation between people who have thought of quitting paan and those

who have seen anyone who have faced severe health consequences

73.3% of the respondent who have not seen anyone facing severe health consequences

say no to quitting. So, making them aware about its consequences may help them.

CONCLUSION

We observed that a strong majority of jarda paan consumers does notthink that paan consumption causes mouth ulcer, which clearly shows

the lack of awareness among people.

• The adverse health impacts of this high paan consumption use will be

enormous when the country is already facing poverty and malnutrition.

• Those consuming paan more than thrice a day agree to a large extent

that consuming paan causes mouth ulcer.

• We can easily observe that those who feel restless without consuming

paan or who consume it on a regular basis suffer from tooth problem.

A large number of respondent who suffer from mouth ulcer does notconsume gutka but consumes khaini on a regular basis.

• Gutka is used as a substitute for paan and contains paan masala and is

used for refreshment. So, maybe people don’t realize that consuming

paan causes mouth ulcer.

• We have seen that there is a lack of awareness among people about the

health implication of paan consumption.

RECOMMENDATION AND SUGGESTIONS

• There is a lot of unawareness among general public regarding the ill-

effects of Paan consumption on their physical and mental health. Thus,

there should be a comprehensive and proper awareness program so as

to educate the people about various facts of Paan consumption and the

physical harm it causes over long time-period.

• Also, our finding suggests that jarda causes more harm than anything

else when it is taken with betel leaves during paan consumption. And,

majority of people consuming jarda paan is unaware of this. Hence, we

also need to make them aware of the substitutes of jarda paan and

pursue them to stop using or minimize the use of jarda paan. This will

vastly improve the deteriorating health condition of people consuming

paan.
