CHARLES W. STOCKEY CENTRE FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS PARRY SOUND, ONTARIO
28TH ANNUAL SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVAL JAMES CAMPBELL, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
july 20 – augusπ 12, 2007
Dear Friends,How time fl ies! It seems a very short time ago that I had the thrill of standing on the stage at the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts for the fi rst time to express the feelings of so many with the words “dreams do come true”. We are now in our fi fth summer season in our new home and loving every minute of it!
Though this is our 28th season, the excitement and challenges make it feel like we are starting fresh every year. We do, however, have the advantage of hind sight and this summer we return to an idea that fi rst appeared here in the early nineties: music from around the world! India, Greece, New Zealand, China, Afghanistan and the Ukraine are but a few of the countries whose music will enrich our summer experience.
Christos Hatzis, our composer in residence, is a musician who embraces many cultures and styles. I encourage you to attend the performances of his wonderful music – you will be astounded by the breadth of his imagination.
Music from the Inside Out, an enlightening series of talks, open rehearsals, interviews, and lectures, will nourish your mind and your soul by deepening your understanding of the classics, and by opening your ears to the sounds of the new.
Please join us in the acoustically perfect Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts on the shores of spectacular Georgian Bay for another incredible season.
Time does seem to fl y, especially when you are having fun!

Opening Weekend — July 20 to 22We remember the thrill of fi rst hearing music in the new perform-
ance hall and have invited back the Elmer Iseler Singers, the
True North Brass and the Hannaford Street Silver Band to jump-
start this season with programmes reminiscent of those of the
opening weekend in 2003. Our pride in the warm and inviting
atmosphere and the outstanding acoustics of the Charles
W. Stockey Festival Performance Hall grows with every concert
we hear. The chamber music concert on the Sunday afternoon
of the opening weekend pays tribute to Charles Stockey, the
beloved benefactor who helped to make the new hall possible.
Guitar Heaven — July 22 to 25I’m gonna lose my cares in Guitar Heaven – Neil Diamond
Leave your cares behind and join us for three days of Guitar
Heaven. Concerts, a cruise, a masterclass and a special event at a
private club will introduce you to the broad range and compelling
sounds of the guitar, and to the master musicians who not only
play, but also arrange and compose for it.
Painted Sound — July 26, August 3 & 11In Painted Sound, the Festival of the Sound celebrates the
relationship between visual art and music. This year, the Painted
Sound series off ers three fi lms. Beethoven’s Hair is a Rhombus

hair through the ages, from the hands of a young student to

Christos HatzisComposer-in-residence Christos Hatzis “is currently enjoying a
growing international reputation as one of the most important
composers writing today.” (CBC Records) A professor of composition
at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto, he is the recipient
of such distinctions as the Jean A. Chalmers National Music Award
and the Jules Léger Prize for Chamber Music as well as three Juno
nominations and a 2006 Juno Award in the Classical Composition
of the Year category. Christos Hatzis’s music is inspired by early
Christian spirituality, his own Byzantine music heritage, world
cultures and various non-classical genres such as jazz, pop and
world music. He is an advocate of borderless culture and many of
his most recent works bridge the gap between classical music and
today’s popular music idioms. He was introduced to throat singing
by Keith Horner after Keith heard it for the fi rst time at the 1992
Festival opening concert in honour of Canada 125. Hatzis’s Inuit-
inspired works, particularly the award winning radio documentary
Footprints in New Snow, have promoted Inuit culture around the
world. Hear works by Christos Hatzis throughout the 2007 Festival
of the Sound and meet the composer in informal sessions.

wandering three-hour route through the wild and rugged beauty
of the 30,000 Islands, a region recently designated by the United
Nations as a Biosphere Reserve. The cruises have been a highlight
of every Festival season since our inception, blending wonderful
music with the spectacular scenery. Performances are on the lower
deck of the Island Queen and heard throughout the ship.

RBC Stockey Young Artist Darrett Zusko is quickly establishing himself as one of today’s up-and-coming concert artists, having appeared throughout Canada, the United States, Spain and the UK. He has been described as having “a monumental technique wed to a powerful, incisive and informed musical intelligence” by John Bell Young of Clavier Magazine. A top prizewinner at the Concours Musical International de Montreal (2004) and the New Orleans International Piano Competition (2004), he is also the recipient of numerous other awards.
One Saturday morning in 1994 as we were preparing for a piano recital, in which Jamie Parker would be joined by young piano students, we met a young man and his mother in the lobby of Parry Sound High School. “Is it okay if he plays this morning?” asked the mother. Wanting to include as many children as possible, we agreed to this late addition to the programme. Darrett Zusko’s performance that morning was unforgettable, our fi rst introduction to the 2007 RBC Stockey Young Artist. After working with composer Harry Somers, Darrett gave the premiere of his fi nal work for piano, Nothing Too Serious, in January of 1999. Following the death of Mr. Somers that spring, Darrett performed the work at the Festival of the Sound in his memory. On the same concert, at 14 years of age, he performed the Dohnányi Piano Quintet with the Allegri String Quartet. Now 22 years of age, he is a student of Julian Martin at the Juilliard School in New York.
Charles Stockey loved young artists and often expressed his desire for them to perform in the wonderful acoustics of the concert hall that he helped to build. The Festival of the Sound names the Stockey Young Artist each year to honour this wish.
RBC Stockey Young Artist
The RBC Stockey Young Artist is generously supported by:
RBC Dominion Securities and RBC Foundation support arts and culture through the RBC Emerging Artists Support Project because of their belief in the power of the arts to enrich lives and enhance communities. The Festival of the Sound is developing the RBC Stockey Young Artist program to support exceptional young musicians in their transition to professional careers.

Don’t miss one of the year’s best nights out! Get your ticket for the 4th annual Prelude Gala – a very special evening at the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts on Saturday, June 2nd, from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m.
Sample delectable off erings from cottage country’s fi nest restaurants and inns, and Ontario’s renowned wineries and breweries. Listen to great performances by multi-talented Guy Few (piano, trumpet and vocals) accompanied by Stephanie Mara, Gene DiNovi (piano), and, of course, James Campbell (clarinet).
Bid on a unique collection of live and silent auction items. Keep up with entertaining auctioneer Michael Schurman and take home an original treasure. Artist Alan Stein is donating a painting from the same Northern Lights series as the work on the cover of this brochure.
“Shop” the silent auction for great pre-summer deals and gift ideas. (Need the services of an organizational consultant, chimney sweep or a piano tuner?) Among this year’s array of items are two Geoff rey Armstrong landscapes and four original paintings done by Sara Tyson as chapter dividers for the Festival’s ‘Sounds Good’ cookbook.
Proceeds from Prelude are used to help fund Music Scores for area school children throughout the year, and Music from the Inside Out during the Festival. Programmes worth celebrating!
Get dressed in your best and join us at the Charles W. Stockey Centre for an exciting Prelude to our 28th season. Tickets are $100 per person [tax receipt issued for $40].

Music Scores
The Festival’s statement of Vision and Goals includes “to enhance the community’s sense of pride and achievement in the Festival of the Sound while fostering local interest in the arts.” To thank the Parry Sound community for helping us build the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts, we off er Music Scores to children in Grades 4 to 6 in eleven area schools. Festival musicians visit each school to help the students get to know them in an informal setting, introduce their instru-ments and prepare them for the concert. Then all 700 children come to the Stockey Centre by bus or on foot. Excitement usuallyreaches a fever pitch in the hall before the concert begins but, as soon as the musicians walk on to the stage, the children settle in to listen attentively to the musicians whom they now regard as friends.
Music Scores is off ered without charge to the children, their fami-lies or the schools. The Festival of the Sound thanks the following for the support that made the 2006-07 sessions possible:
• The Near North Board of Education
• The Recording Industries Music Performance Fund of the American Federation of Musicians

Music From the Inside Out
In this series of free lectures, discussions, open rehearsals and masterclasses, we invite you to improve your understanding of and appreciation for the music you’ll hear this summer. Interludes between morning and noon concerts are brief chats, about 20 minutes in length. Overtures, preceding evening concerts, focus on a particular topic often related to the evening performance. Jeff rey Stokes’s inspiring explorations of a variety of musical topics and Music Around Us host Keith Horner’s onstage chats with musicians provide a glimpse into the life behind the scenes at the Festival.
MUSIC SCORES FOR ADULTS
Listening to music is a lot like drinking wine – you know what you like but you don’t always know how or why. These workshops provide general knowledge to enhance your concert understanding and enjoyment. Last year’s sessions were attended by an interesting mix of those new to the world of chamber music and seasoned listeners. Come to listen, learn and discuss with others in three free sessions led by Jim Ferris, a retired music educator whose goal is to help you get the most out of the music that you hear at the Festival and beyond.

Charles & Lois Stockey Endowment Fund
In 2002, as construction proceeded on the long awaited performance hall on the Parry Sound waterfront, Charles and Lois Stockey made a donation of $1.7 million to the Festival of the Sound to name the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts. At last the Festival had a home, an intimate performance hall that has come to be ranked as one of the fi nest in the world for chamber music. The Stockeys’ generous gift is an example of philanthropy at its fi nest. At every opportunity, Charles invited others to join him in the pleasure of giving to the Festival of the Sound. During the 25th Anniversary Season in 2004, the Festival Board established the Charles and Lois Stockey Endowment Fund to honour our benefactors. All cash donations directed to this fund are invested, with the interest used to support annual operations.
Charles Stockey died in September of 2004 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Lois lives in Victoria but maintains a keen interest in news from Parry Sound and looks forward to her annual visit for the summer concert series.
