KLOZURE technology provides the answerin difficult operating conditions.

Garlock KLOZURE seals 23, 26, 151, 154 and161 come without a metal case. They are inten-ded for all applications where use of shaftseals with a metal case is, for structural,assembly-related, or medium-specific reasons, not possible. All of these models are availableeither in split (except for model 161) or conti-nuous versions. They are, by virtue of theirstraightforward design, universally suitable forall sorts of application and have proved theirreliability in many sectors of industry worldwide. The sealing lip is made from a high-qualityelastomer compound which in terms of its lowfriction values and long useful life is truly out-standing.These models, with this carefully selected elastomer and stainless-steel springs, are highly resistant to the adverse effects of chemicals and corrosives.

With or without a metal case, with specialgarter springs or finger springs, and in abroad range of materials ideally adaptedto all sorts of operating conditions - theresult of decades of experience thatGarlock has accumulated in this field - ourKLOZURE oil seals are the preferred choiceworldwide.

Garlock‘s KLOZURE seals can handle extremeoperating conditions - from small devices rightthrough to very heavy machinery. For morethan 60 years KLOZURE seals have been usedwith great success all over the world on ma-chinery in the pulp and paper industry, thealuminum industry, and the steel industry.KLOZURE seals, with their carefully selectedmaterials and ingenious and user-friendlydesign, combine high functional reliability and a long useful life. The extensive KLOZURE range has, time andtime again, provided the ideal solution for awide variety of customer specific applications– not only for new systems but also when itcomes to providing alternatives or when oldplant is due for upgrading.

KLOZURE 64

Garlock‘s KLOZURE 64 is speciallydesigned for use in particularly diffi-cult operating conditions. It has pro-ved indispensable in the pulp andpaper, aluminum and steel industriesworlwide. KLOZURE model 64 hasproven its particular value in allapplications which involve largeshaft-to-bore misalignment and highperipheral speeds but still require a

KLOZURE 59

Garlock‘s KLOZURE 59 successfullycombines the excellent qualities ofthe KLOZURE 64 model with specialassembly and installation advanta-ges. Otherwise identical to the KLO-ZURE 64 in terms of basic designand structure, the only difference isthat the KLOZURE 59 operates notwith the KLOZURE 64‘s finger spring

KLOZURE 53, KLOZURE 63

Garlock‘s KLOZURE 53 and KLO-ZURE 63 cover the requirementsspectrum for smaller diameters. They share the same design as the KLOZURE 64 except that these models, intended for smallerdiameter applications, incorporatethe finger spring only; (the garterspring is not needed).

Within the range of applications forwhich they are intended these sealsoffer all the same advantages, inclu-ding functional reliability and a longuseful life.

KLOZURE Specials

The highly successful Garlock KLOZURE concept can also, onrequest, be modified for unusualneeds (e.g. peripheral speeds up to35 meters per second and tempera-tures above 200 °C). The two exam-ples show the full breadth of ourspectrum of KLOZURE special soluti-ons. For further details please contactus at Garlock. We shall be pleasedto give you more informations.

long useful life and high reliability. The elastic and rust-resistant stainlessfinger springs press the sealing lipuniformly and evenly onto the rota-ting shaft. Shaft-to-bore misalignmentand dynamic runout are absorbedby the finger spring. The garterspring which is integrated in the fin-ger spring only responds in the eventof extreme misalignment or runout. In

conjunction with this spring assemblythe sealing lip operates very elasti-cally, generating only a low radialforce. The sealing lip is clamped inposition together with the fingerspring in a heavy-duty metal-case.This heavy-duty housing makes thesealing ring dimensionally very sta-ble, especially suitable for large dia-meter bores, and easy to install.

and garter spring combination butwith a vulcanized finger springinstead. Thanks to the structural design theKLOZURE 59 is easy to install – evenwhen blind-mounting. The KLOZURE59 is available for shafts of 150 mmdiameter and above.

Model 23 Split

Certain situationswhere installationis particularly diffi-cult may require asplit sealing ring.

This is where Garlock‘s KLOZURE 23Split comes into its own. It is manufac-tured from homogeneous nitrile rubberand incorporates vulcanized, stainlessteel fingers springs. Thanks to thisfinger spring design the KLOZURE 23Split sealing ring can be easily in-stalled and will operate reliably andtrouble-free.Garlock‘s KLOZURE 23 has provenits value in the construction of heavymachinery, in rolling mills, paper-making machines, marine motors, earth movers, and gear systems, andas wipers in hydraulic applications. The KLOZURE 23 must always beinstalled together with a cover plate. It is suitable for non-pressurized applications only.

Model 26

Garlock‘s KLOZU-RE 26 is a sealingring without ametal-case. Itshomogeneous

elastomer compound reinforced backensure that the ring is not axially twisted (not in split or pressurizedapplications). Thanks to its structural design theKLOZURE 26 is easy to use and easyto install. Even in difficult positionswhere it has to be blind-mounted,the sealing lip cannot flip over andthe spring cannot jump out.In cases where a split sealing ring isused, a cover plate is required. TheKLOZURE 26 is used predominantlyin the pulp and paper, aluminum, and steel industries. In the steel in-dustry in particular it has provedindispensable for working rollers.Other applications include blowers, pumps, mining machinery, generalmechanical engineering and machineconstruction. When installed together with its cover plate the KLOZURE 26 can beused under pressures up to 1 bar.

Range of applications anddesign features

The cross-section of KLOZURE sea-ling rings comprise three elements. The back is substantially dimensioned,fabric-reinforced elastomer for sup-porting the sealing ring against thehousing bore (not on model 23).The sealing lip with its integratedstainless steel garter spring (models151, 154, 161) ensures that this designcan also cope with large shaft-to-bore misalignment and dynamic run out. These Garlock sealing rings are usedpredominantly in the pulp and paper, aluminum, and steel industries, in theconstruction of heavy machinery, andparticularly in gear systems andpumps.KLOZURE sealing rings have beenused with great success for manyyears. Their variety has grown in response to customers‘ special requirements.

Shaft speed

Garlock Universal Oil Seals Model 151 and Model 154can, in otherwise ideal conditions, be used for peripheralspeeds of up to maximum 25 meters per second. With Garlock Universal Oil Seal Model 161, the maxi-mum permissible shaft speed depends on the pressure. For further details, please refer to the pressure diagram in the section entitled ”Pressure”.

Pressure

Split Universal Oil Seals Model 151-1 and Model 154-1are not designed for applications involving exposure topressure.Models 151-2 and 154-2 can, depending on revolutionsand shaft speed, be used in applications involving pres-sure differences as per DIN 3760.The maximum permissible pressure is 0.5 bar.Model 161-0 is the sealing ring designed to be especiallypressure-resistant.It can withstand pressures, depending on shaft speed, as shown in the pressure diagram.

Shaft-to-bore misalignment and dynamic runout

Thanks to their design and construction Garlock universalsealing rings can absorb considerable radial shaft-to-bore misalignment and dynamic runout. The maximum radial play depends on the cross-sectionand diameter of the sealing ring and on the shaft speedinvolved. The maximum permissible radial excursion as a combina-tion of shaft-to-bore misalignment and dynamic runout isshown in simplified form in the following diagram.

Lubrication

The essential prerequisite for giving Garlock universalsealing rings a long useful life is to ensure that the sealing lip is always adequately lubricated. If lubrication is not provided by the medium itself then itmust be supplied separately (radial or peripheral grooves).

Fig. 2Fig. 1

Insertion and installation instructions

• Garlock Universal Oil Seal Model 151, 154, 161, 23, 26(split) must be inserted together with the retainer ring, which, when completely tightened, generates extraaxial twist and thus increased static hermeticity.

• Also with a view to achieving optimal hermiticity theexternal diameter of the sealing ring is made slightlylarger than that of the housing bore. To facilitate instal-lation the housing bore should be chamfered.

• Universal Oil Seal Model 151, 154 ,26 are available inboth split and continuous versions. In certain situationsa split sealing ring is easier to install. The split versionsof these sealing rings are not pressure-resistant.

• Before installing, check the sealingrings for signs of damage and fordust and dirt. Also before installing, apply lubricant to the sealing lip.

• Clean the mounting recess.• Lay the split sealing rings around

the shaft. In the case of sealingrings with a garter spring, thespring must first be opened at thespring lock. As soon as the sealingring is sitting in position on theshaft, the garter spring must thenbe closed again at the spring lockand laid in the groove on the sea-ling lip.

• In the case of horizontal shafts thejoint must be positioned on top. Intandem arrangements the joint mustbe positioned at 11 o’clock / 13 o’clock.

First the joint must be placed in themounting recess; (see Figure 1)Then the sealing must be pressedslowly in all round the mountingrecess. Then the retainer ring mustbe mounted and tightened; (see Figure 2).Having installed the sealing ring, check that the sealing lip sits snuglyall round.

Additional information for cover plates

The cover plate can be either split orcontinuous. It should in either casehave a minimum thickness of 6 mmthus ensuring that the sealing ringsare pressed properly in position.
