Biographical / Historical

The first settlers of what is now the village of Tupper Lake were hunters, anglers, and trappers. In 1850, the Pomeroy Lumber Company began a logging operation, and with the onset oflogging came an influx of settlers to the area. A clearing left by clear-cutting the forest byRaquette Pond became the site of the village of Tupper Lake. In the 1890s, a large number ofbuildings were erected, but in 1899 a fire burned 169 of them to the ground. As the lumberbusiness swelled, the village of Faust became a railroad hub, and so the nearby village of TupperLake prospered and was officially founded in 1903.In the 1940s the villages of Faust and Tupper Lake combined to become the village of TupperLake. The former village of Faust began where Main Street meets Demars Boulevard andcontinued west beyond the cemetery. The former village of Faust is now known as "TheJunction,” still called to this day by the people of Tupper Lake. It was so named due to thejunction of railroad lines located in Faust. The only reference left to the town of Faust is theFaust Motel, located on Main Street. The Faust Roundhouse (one of the largest buildings in thearea at the time) was located behind Web Row and near the railroad station. It burned to theground in the 1940s.The town of Altamont was organized in 1890 from the town of Waverly and was the last townorganized in the county. In 1913, a part of St. Lawrence County was added to the town ofAltamont. In an effort to avoid confusion with other "Altamonts" around the state and tostrengthen ties with the village of Tupper Lake, town councilors changed the town name from"Altamont" to "Tupper Lake" on July 16, 2004.Winter sports at “Big Tupper,” factories such as the Oval Wood Dish Company (OWD), and thelumber industry made Tupper Lake a booming town until recent years, but these industries havesince significantly diminished, or in the case of OWD, no longer existed.

Scope and Contents / Arrangement

Scope and Contents Note: The Goff-Nelson Memorial Library Photograph Collection documentsdaily life in Tupper Lake and the surrounding Adirondack region from approximately 1860 to the2010s. The collection consists primarily of loose original photographs, facsimiles/photocopies,photo albums, oversize materials, negatives / contact sheets, and a ring-bound set of slides. Thephotographs cover almost every aspect of daily life in the Tupper Lake community including, butnot limited to, businesses, schools, social and religious organizations, local government, construction, infrastructure, the railroad and lumber industries, sports, and special events such asWoodsmen’s Days and the Tin-Man Triathlon.

Arrangement Note: The collection is first arranged by format including loose photographs, albums, negatives/contact sheets, and slides. Within those general categories, the photographs areseparated into series by subject, and then ordered alphabetically at the folder level. There is littleto no semblance of any original order, and the photographs are not organized chronologically.

Custodial History Note: The photographs in this collection do not come from just one individual, organization, or donor. While in the possession of the library and before being processed, volunteers and interns attempted to organize the photographs loosely by over-generalizedcategories. During this process, original order was lost and the provenance of the majority of thephotographs is unknown.

Immediate Source of Acquisition: This collection was created by the Goff-Nelson MemorialLibrary through several donations over the years including, but not limited to, John J. Suman in1964, the Saranac Free Library in 1970, John C. Goff in 1972, Hamilton College in 2013, and theTupper Lake Free Press in 2019. Due to the largely unknown custodial history of the collection,it is assumed that a number of the materials in the collection were donated by independentphotograph studios and various anonymous members of the Tupper Lake Community. Theaccession numbers associated with this collection are 1964.01, 1970.01, 1972.01, 2013.01, and2019.01.

Processing Information

The collection was processed solely by the archivist, Conor Snow. All prior attempts atorganization by library staff, volunteers, and interns did not influence the decisions of thearchivist. The archivist independently created the series and moved photographs out of theiroriginal folders. In some cases, however, the archivist tried their best to keep materials togetherthat appeared to be linked or donated to the library as a set.

In many cases the collection included duplicates, photocopies, old metadata sheets and photos oforiginal photographs. Photocopies were discarded only if the original photo was still in thecollection, and a large number of duplicate photos and postcards were also weeded out. Inaddition, metadata sheets remained in the collection with their corresponding photographs, although not every photo has a metadata sheet. Please see the processing notes at the series levelfor more detailed information where applicable.

Photograph albums consist of a number of loose photographs that have fallen out due to wear onthe adhesive used to mount the materials. These photographs were housed in mylar casings andremained with the albums in order to retain provenance.
