Annual Leadership AlumGathering at Lagunitas
The annual Petaluma Leadership alumni get-together will have another objective this year – raising funds for the first Leadership scholarship for a Petaluma Fire Person.
The group will take over the Lagunitas Brewery beer garden on Tuesday, September 25, 5:30-8:39 pm for food, companionship, and entertainment.
Dinner will be catered by Sally Tomatoes, beer and wine offered by Lagunitas Brewery, and entertainment by Randy and the Special Agents, featuring a pair of Leadership grads, Randy Benefield and Ann Moreno, dishing up the blues.
Cost for the event is $20 per person in advance, and includes dinner and two beer tokens. RSVP by September 20.
Cost at the door is $25 for dinner only.
Guests are welcome, especially those interested in learning more about PACC Leadership Class.

September 12 has been set as the date for this year’s Petaluma City Council Candidates’ night, co-sponsored by the Petaluma Area Chamber of Commerce and the Argus-Courier, and hosted by the Petaluma Sheraton.
The event starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Sheraton, and will be moderated by local attorney Leroy Lounibos.
This year, six candidates have filed to
run for three seats. They are incumbents

Healy, and challengers Kathy Miller,
Jason Davies and Elizabeth Herries.
Candidates will be expected to answer
questions from the moderator regarding

Healthy bodies and a healthy economy will be the focus of the September edition of Wake Up Petaluma, scheduled for Tuesday, September 25, 7:30 a.m. at Rooster Run Event Center.
Ben Stone from the Sonoma County Economic Development Board will be on hand to introduce the County’s new economic recovery team. Tim Ricard, Christine Palmer, and Al Lerma will form a panel to discuss new initiatives being undertaken at the County level to bolster the local economy. The three occupy positions created by the County Board of Supervisors this year to stimulate job growth in the County.
In addition, Ramona Faith of the
Petaluma Health Care District will introduce a new health care initiative for Petaluma.

Sandy Proteau Herbalife International
Hello! My name is Sandy Proteau and I have been an active Chamber member for just over a year. I have thoroughly enjoyed the many aspects that being a member provides including meeting local business owners, and involved, concerned community members. I decided to join the ambassador committee just a couple of months ago because I saw the fun they had as well as providing a service at Chamber functions. I enjoy greeting and meeting new faces in our wonderful community.
I grew up in Modesto and moved to Rohnert Park to attend S.S.U. I enjoyed getting to know Sonoma County while studying psychology and Early Childhood Education. I met my husband of 24 years my senior year, and we lived in the area another couple years.
Circumstances allowed us to move and we returned to Stanislaus County where I taught school for fifteen years.
Last July we moved back to Petaluma, and truly feel as if we have “come home.” I dearly love this area!! We enjoy walking our lab Bella along the beautiful, pet friendly streets. We also frequent going to the coast which is such a close, lovely drive. We have enjoyed many of the events which are held throughout the year, including fundraisers, music venues, and outdoor art and garden events.
I look forward to being an active ambassador with fellow members. I enjoy giving back to the community and feel we all gain so much through networking, sharing ideas, and having fun at the many sponsored Chamber events.
In 2009 I grew tired of carrying around an extra 30 pounds, and suffering health consequences. I tried Herbalife and lost thirty pounds in eight months healthfully. I gained an increase in energy, lowered my blood pressure, and have a heightened sense of self confidence! I have kept that weight off for three years and have since become an Herbalife Distributor, and have my own business as a health and wellness coach!

Commentary
The Chamber has a pair of events
coming up that should be of interest
to every Chamber member. One is
the annual Petaluma Business Expo,
scheduled for Thursday, October 4 At
the Petaluma Community Center.
The other is the traditional Chamber-
sponsored candidates’ night, to be held
at the Petaluma Sheraton on Tuesday,
September 12, at 5:30 p.m.
The Business Expo is one of our
Chamber’s most important events
of the year, giving our members the
opportunity to showcase their various
goods and services and conversely, see
what our business neighbors have to
offer as well.
Every year the Lucchesi Community
Center is packed with business people
strolling from booth to booth, getting
to know new businesses in town, or
becoming reacquainted with businesses
that have been around for a long time.
A great selection of good things to eat is
being offered by a cross-section of our
restaurant and catering community to
help make the strolling that much more
pleasant.
And, for many of us, it is perhaps the
one time each year that a great many of
the business leaders in our community all
convene in one place at the same time –
a tremendous networking opportunity.
So, mark your calendar now, and while
you’re at it, consider your own booth.
Most years, this event is a sell-out, so
it is a good idea for exhibitors to make
National Little LeagueThe Pride of Petaluma
Petaluma is once again on the map, and it is a group of 12 and 13 year olds
that has accomplished the mission. This city’s National Little League team has
ventured into territory never before visited by a local area team, and has made
its city proud.
Here at the Chamber, the excitement was particularly intense. Danny Marzo,
who played key roles both hitting and pitching, is the son of Chamber Board
member and former Chamber President Richard Marzo.
As the excitement increased after every Petaluma win, there did not seem to
be one person in this city who was not following the team’s progress. And, what
a progress it was -- a trail of 27 games to the U.S. championship game through
six tournaments.
They started with the District tourney, playing County teams, winning that
one, then to the Section tournament, with teams from a greater region around
Sonoma County, and another victory.
Next was the Division tournament, for the championship of Northern
California, and they won that one, and on to the West region, and another
victory and the right to play as one of eight U.S. teams in the World Series.
These were all double elimination tournaments, but it is significant that up
to the U.S. championships, Petaluma National lost only three games. One was
to Tennessee in the World Series. One was to perennial East Bay powerhouse
San Ramon in the Division playoffs, and the other was to Petaluma Valley Little
League, another home grown team that accomplished what only two other
teams in this country did – they beat Petaluma National once.
So, once again, Petaluma is a nationally famous name. We seem to have had
more than our share of national notice over the decades. For a half century, we
achieved status as the acknowledged “Egg Capital” of the universe. We were
cited in a book by John Steinbeck. The “Petaluma Plan” to regulate residential
growth was upheld at the U.S. Supreme Court and became a staple in community
planning courses in our colleges.
For years, the Worlds Wrist Wrestling Tournament from Petaluma was an
annual feature on ABC’s Wide World of Sports, and our annual Ugly Dog Contest
garners worldwide attention. American Graffiti, a movie on many top 100 all-
time movie lists, was filmed here.
All of this has contributed to an intense level of community pride that was
evidenced when it became known that there was a need to raise at least $60,000
to send the players and their families to Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and the
opportunity of a once-in-a-lifetime chance to be a part of a Little League World
Series.
This town responded nobly. Instead of $60,000, the people of Petaluma raised
$80,000 to ensure that every parent had the chance to see his or her child
perform at the “big show.”

Bocce Ball FundraiserFor Mentor Me Petaluma
A beautiful garden in Westside Petaluma will be the setting for a fun-filled, fund-raising event on Sunday September 16th – the Bocce Ball-a-Palooza tournament. It will benefit Mentor Me Petaluma, a youth mentoring program which provides volunteer mentors to at-risk young people ages 5-17. This event is Petaluma’s only charity bocce ball tournament and is expected to sell out.
Mentor Me Petaluma has been active in Petaluma since 2001, working to make a difference in the lives of young people and adults. Mentoring changes two lives simultaneously as both mentors and mentees grow and learn together, forging lifelong friendships and community connections.
Bocce players and spectators will enjoy a casual Italian lunch along with wine, beer, soft drinks, coffee and dessert. A drawing will offer the opportunity to win themed prizes, a flat screen TV or a Kindle. Registration begins at 11:30am and games begin at noon. All teams will have a chance to play at least three games; the final match will end by 4:30pm. Members of the Sonoma County Bocce Federation will be on hand as referees.
Individual registration is $75; teams of four may register for $280. Spectator tickets are $25. All tickets include lunch and two drinks. All ages welcome, no bocce experience needed.

The North Coast Chapter of the California Landscape Contractors Association (CLCA) recently held its annual Landscape Achievement Awards program. The program honors projects in various categories and contract ranges for projects in Marin, Sonoma and Napa counties. All jobs are visited by independent judges rated on level of craftsmanship, difficulty and overall quality against other projects in the same category.
