Welcome to summer in the

South. I hope everyone’s training is going well despite the heat and humidity. The Pacer race schedule, as usual, is open for June and July. This gives everyone a much needed break; the runners and volunteers. There are still races to be found in the surrounding area for those who like these conditions.

The Pacer race schedule will be finalized during the June and July Board meetings. At this time, the schedule appears the same as previous years with Crime Prevention 5K, Chickasabogue 2-Miler, and Hurricane 5K starting out the season. The exact dates and times will be available in the PaceLetter and on our website.

I would like to thank everyone for electing me president of the club. I am not sure what I am in for, but I will do my best to keep

the club running as well as it has in the past. I especially want to thank Richard Leonard, Past President, with his help in getting me ready for this position.

A little background on myself, I am a native of Mobile. I moved away with my parents, but returned after finishing school in July 2001. I had a little running experience in middle school but nothing beyond. I started running regularly in January 2001 with the goal of weight loss and stress relief while finishing my education. I moved to Fairhope in July 2001 and joined the Pacers after the Crime Prevention 5K. I have been running with the club since that time.

My work with the Pacers started with assisting on course measurement in 2003. Leon Mattics and John Olive taught me how to measure courses for certification. I have since been measuring most of the area races to

ensure that they are the correct distance.

I have also been the race director for the Holiday Half Marathon and 8K since 2005. This has taught me a lot about the other side of racing and the amount of preparation needed to have a successful event. At this time, I plan to continue to direct this race in addition to my new duties as club president.

I know many of you from over the years attending races. If any of you have questions or comments about making the club better, please feel free to approach me at races or from my contact information on the Pacers website. Fond Farewells! We will miss Joe Rolison at our events! He and his wife had a wonderful opportunity to take on a new, bigger congregation in Missouri. Yes, Joe has moved to Missouri. However we did extract a promise from him that he would be attending ATR 2010. We are holding you to that Joe!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers who have helped during this race season. I never expected to encounter so many generous people, so dedicated to the club and the success of our races. Neither rain, nor cold, nor distance ever seemed to waiver your commitment. I will be moving into the role of Race Director this year and turning the Volunteer Coordinator position over to Elise Partridge. Please join me in welcoming Elise. We are fortunate to have her join our board, and I think we will all enjoy working with her.

Promotion Commotion By Will Wright

As the number of races in the Mobile area bottom out during the hot summer months, I often try to recall some running "rules of thumb" and determine if I am still abiding by them. After almost 30 years of running "into old age", I tend to take things for granted and perhaps take a few short cuts as well to "do it my way"! Here are a few things I am talking about. The 10-second rule

It is not good to run the first mile of the race more than 10 seconds faster than the planned average pace for the entire race. If you do, you can just about double the number of seconds you are under that average pace and add them to your last mile. For example, if you plan to average a 7:00 min. pace over the 5K distance but run faster than a 6:50 the first mile, you will probably run the last mile in about 7:20. That is why we are cautioned, “Don’t go out too fast". This is one of my greatest problems with which I contend in every race.

Ideal weight

Every runner has a weight which is best for his or her running and this must be determined individually. If you get too far below this weight, you may lose strength and run slower. And if you get too far above this weight, you will be carrying extra poundage and run slower; in fact the "rule" is two-second-per pound-per-mile slower. Thus that extra five pounds could cost you about 30 seconds in that next 5K!

The hard/easy rule You should alternate hard and

easy days, especially as you get older. This can minimize injury and allow your body to repair itself. Take care of your body and remember that after a long run, that speed session, and that race. In fact there is the one-day-per-mile-raced-recovery rule. You may feel all right but your body will not be back to 100% for example until the seventh day after that hard 10K race. I have found this to be true in that it takes me about four weeks to "hit on all cylinders"

after a marathon.

The Yasso 800s rule You can predict your marathon

time in hours and minutes by manipulating how long it takes you to run 800 meters in minutes and seconds. For example a 3 minute 30 second time for the 800 meters is equivalent to a 3 hour 30 minute marathon. This works best when you run several 800s weekly over a period of several weeks.

The 20-second slowdown rule Every time you double your race

distance, your average pace will slow down about 20 seconds per mile. For example, if your 5K pace is 7:00 min. your 10K pace should be about 7:20. Then there are other prediction factors, and these can vary, but one is based on a "good, all out" mile time. Add 33 seconds to your mile time for your 5K pace (be careful in converting between seconds and minutes). Multiply your mile time: by 1.15 for your 10K pace; by 1.2 for your half marathon pace; by 1.3 to predict your marathon pace. Thus for a 7:00 min. mile the 5K pace would be 7:33 for a 23:24 time. For a 10K, the pace would be 8:03 for a 49:55 time. The Half would be 8:24 for 1:50:03, and the marathon would be 9:06 for a 3:58:25. These factors assume the runners are trained and capable of

running the distances, and of course weather, terrain, and your condition on race day have to be considered. Developing and examining a table that applies to you could give you some direction in your training needs as well. If your times at the longer distances are worse than predicted, you may need long runs to work on endurance. If they are much better at the longer distances than predicted, you may need speed work to lower your mile pace. You can do a lot of things with numbers and trends, but three physical facts underlie these factors. One is that you slow down by a predictable percentage as the racing distance increases. Two, your potential at the longer distances is set by your speed in the shorter ones. And three, you must train for the longer races or none of these numbers will work. And speaking of trends, I have worn my new Pacer Wear singlet in five races and won the Senior Grand Master award in all five races! One might say there is a correlation here, but another would say "Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital!” like David Jeffrey not being entered in any of

these five races!

Mitchell McCullough and Will Wright (wearing his Pacer Wear singlet) take a refreshing pause after the Crichton & Toulminville 5K. Each won their respective age group awards.

Holderfield’s House Fire

The Holderfield family’s house burned down from a lightening strike in May. They lost many of their belongings and are slowly getting the entire, overwhelming amount of details and planning to get their lives back. They have had a wonderful response from neighbors and friends who have helped them tremendously. We are so glad that no one was injured! We hope that we see them soon at

Meet Peggy Black by Sylvia Rogers

Peggy Black only started running in her late fifties when her doctor told her that she had to start exercise immediately for her health’s sake. Among other problems, her good cholesterol was too low and her bad cholesterol was too high. She took herself in hand and transformed herself into a fit person with a healthy, active lifestyle. She said that she had a long way to go. The first time she went walking in the mall, she ran out of energy by the time she had walked from Sears to Penny's and had to sit down to rest. Peggy joined the Port City Pacers because she didn't know anything about running and wanted to learn. She learned everything she needed to do and now she can tell the new people what to do. She also became a part of the running community and more often than not wins awards at whatever race she decides to run in. Her first race was the Azalea Trail Run. She laughed as she described her clothing. "I

wanted to wear pink because it was the Azalea Trail Run. I had these long pants that made a swishy noise. I thought I would never wear those short running shorts, but I do! My grandchildren asked me, "Why do you to wear those shorts? I always answer, "Because you have to! You will get too hot!" Peggy's favorite race is the Saraland Harvest Festival 8K. Since she grew up in Saraland that race is her hometown favorite. She loves the winding course through Saraland. Peggy is not one to travel outside of South Alabama for a race, she has found all of the racing that she needs right here. After she had been running for awhile, she decided that she should get some additional cross-training and she has been working with personal trainer, Richard Bonham, for 3 years. Next, Peggy realized that she also needed to increase her strength. So she went over to the YMCA and worked with personal trainer/Ironman triathlete, Allyson Lamey. All of this additional cross training has paid off with increased stamina, strength and some very nice biceps! Peggy Black believes that exercise

has transformed her life. She said, "They say that religion transforms your life, running has definitely transformed mine." She really enjoys the spiritual rejuvenation that she gets from running. Peggy worked as an assistant manager at a Wal-Mart for eleven and a half years. She made good money, but it was a high stress job. She contends that her nightshift hours and high stress contributed to the dangerous health situation in which she found herself. One day she saw an ad in the paper for a resident advisor for Wilmer Hall and applied for the job. She didn't have any experience but they saw that she would be perfect for the job and hired her. Seven years later, she is still a resident adviser at Wilmer Hall. A resident adviser does everything for the kids that a parent would. Wilmer Hall residents no longer live with their families and that job fall to Peggy. She thinks of those kids like her children and her grandchildren. Wilmer Hall provides a safe, secure home for children who cannot stay with their families. The children need someone like Peggy who they can trust and who will let them know what they need to be successful in life. Peggy has a husband, Donald, of 24 years. She said he has been a great influence for her on a fit lifestyle. She said he has always exercised. Knee problems do not allow him to run, but he is an avid cyclist that puts hundreds of miles on his bicycle every week. She has two grown children, a son and a daughter who live nearby, and she has four grandsons and two great grandchildren! If you are looking for a role model for a successful transformation from an unfit lifestyle to a fit one, Peggy Black is the one you should look up to!

By Lu Jeffrey My dentist is great! Patients get gas, Novocain, soft music, and pictures on the ceiling! There are a couple of other things I really appreciate about my dentist; he never asks me a question while my mouth is full of instruments, AND he runs! Dr. Walton always chit chats with me about my running before he starts work on my teeth. I went in for an appointment shortly before this year’s ATR. Dr Walton was all set to run it and wanted to better his time from the last ATR he did two years ago. He asked about my pre-race activities. I laid out my pre-race ritual for him as follows; get up early enough to get to the race at least 45 minutes before start time, drink a cup of coffee (half decaf), eat nothing, drink a YooHoo one hour before race time, sip on Cherry Coke Zero and water until time to go to the starting line, empty your bowels, do a warm-up run, chew sugar free spearmint or peppermint gum, line up on the left side of the road, take a small bottle of water to the start line and chug it just before the gun fires. Whew! Dr. Walton found me on race day prior to the start and told me he had followed my ritual as best he could….he even drank a YooHoo! His daughter was with him and, thank goodness, she was carrying the “gum” with her. I had forgotten to bring a piece with me so she gave me one. Dr. Walton had the little bottle of water to chug. I walked with him to the starting line and wished him luck. Dr. Walton finished the ATR ahead of me and improved his previous time by two minutes!! I wondered how much faster he might have been if I had told him about wearing a

“strength” color and special earrings!!

Getting to KnowGetting to KnowGetting to KnowGetting to Know –––– Bill Keith Bill Keith Bill Keith Bill Keith

By Marykara Imwalle and Bill Keith

How long have you lived in

Mobile? Tell us about your

family

I moved here when I was 5, other than 10 years active duty in the US Air Force, I have lived here all my life. I have been married (32 years) to Noreen, son Peter (27), daughter Ana (24)

Why did you start?

I played a lot of league softball and competitive tennis, after the seasons ended in July of 1977; I was looking for another aerobic activity. I thought I was going to die for the first two weeks. After that, I was hooked.

How long have you been running

and how many miles do you run

weekly?

Normally (not in a marathon training cycle) I run 15 to 20 miles.

What is your favorite race

distance? I have always enjoyed the longer distances; my favorite is the marathon because of the preparation required.

What was your most memorable

race experience? What made it

memorable?

It was probably my first marathon in 1988. It was memorable because I did not know what to expect after 20 miles (typical for first-timers) and I finished. I also could not pick up my feet after I finished, my legs just cramped up.

How did you find out about the

club?

At the local races I participated in and I joined the Pacers in 1989.

Tell us about your Marathon

Award Recent marathon experience: I usually plan on running two marathons a year, so when I was

deciding my schedule last summer, I thought it would be neat to run all three Alabama (Huntsville’s Rocket City, Mobile’s First Light, and Birmingham’s Mercedes) marathons in the same season. I had run all three before but not in the same season. When I looked at the Huntsville website, there was a icon for the 3N3 Challenge, which as it turned out, was encouraging people to run all three of these marathons by offering (for a nominal fee) a long-sleeve training shirt, special finisher’s medal, hat, singlet and gift certificate for officially completing all three marathons. Since I was going to do them all anyway, I signed up.

Huntsville’s Rocket City Marathon is the oldest marathon (first run in

1977) in the state and definitely geared to the true marathon runner. There is no other distance (all runners at the starting line are marathoners), it draws a more experienced entry list, it is still run on Saturday, and there is someone calling splits at every mile. The course is good, and we caught a break with the weather (high 30’s start, mid 40’s finish, little wind) as it was really bad two days before the race. I have run this one twice, so the course was familiar to me. Pre- and Post-Race food and activities were bare bones, but finisher’s hat and medal are excellent. Like I said, this is a runner’s race, not a show. Mobile’s First Light is always a treat for me to run (this was my sixth full on this course), I think this is one of the best (if not the best) marathon courses I have ever run. I had to run through a calf tweak at mile 8, but did well coming in. Once again the weather was perfect as temperatures stayed in the 40’s with overcast skies all day, some wind around South, but manageable. Post-Race activities were excellent; however I wish I could have stopped shivering long enough to eat. One of the best parts of this race is that I can drive home in about 20 minutes and take a hot shower. Birmingham’s Mercedes was a little different for me. I had run the half up there in 2006 and the old Vulcan Marathon in 1993 and 1998, but this was a brand new course (two loops) and supposedly “friendlier” than the mountain climbing courses I had run up there previously. The course was okay (some hills, some of the old Vulcan course, some of the old Mercedes course), but poorly marked and uneven due to downtown road work. The real kicker, however, was the weather. Usually in Birmingham for this race you are lucky if the temperature gets to 35, this day we

New State Records!

By Will Wright

Three new state records were set at Mobile's newest race, the Dog River 2 Mile Run held on June 6. Richard Ondimu, age 28, bettered the record in a time of 9:46; however, not being a US citizen he cannot officially "hold" the record. But there is "Moore" for the ladies; for age 57, Melanie Moore ran 15:06 and Jessie Moore, age 36, ran 12:20. Congratulations to all!

BBBBill White Has ill White Has ill White Has ill White Has Officially Officially Officially Officially RetiredRetiredRetiredRetired

By Bill White

I was called up from being past president, semi retired, to be the president midway through this running season. The election was held at the "Bush" and Jon Bowie is the new president. Congratulations to the new board. I am now retired again and here is my last rant. In 1994 I went to a board meeting to complain about my results in a race and Herb Dykes told me to quit complaining and do something about it. I started working with Herb doing results and in short order was on the PCP board. I did results for several years and hated every second of it. We had a DOS RunScore program that would crash at the drop of a hat and it seemed someone was always dropping a hat. I then became course marshal and started trying to get everything organized. I rebuilt the pacer truck, put custom racks in it to hold equipment, and started putting everything in order. We got a monster sound system, new clocks, new aluminum tables, the results trailer, and a generator to run it all. I tried to get the pacers a permanent home instead of paying rent every year but that did not work out. I was pleased to pass on a well-organized and equipped course marshal position and become the president of the Pacers. I worked hard as the president to make sure that we put on quality events that started on time and gave the participants good value for their money. During my tenure as president, we had only two races that did not start on time, one was due to rain and lightening and the other was because of a permit time error. The joke at board meeting is that I am a tax and spend Democrat because I am always trying to get stuff for the club, and I admit it, I am. I want to see a working clock at every mile, I want fast, great results, I want all participants to hear instructions, results, music, loudly and clearly. I want the Pacers to be the club that other clubs talk about and try to

emulate. I think we are! I want to thank all the people who have been on the board with me over the years who had to put up with me. I also want to thank every person who has ever helped at the races in any fashion before, during or after the races. Thank you one and all for your support. The club really needs a person to step up and be course marshal. If you can not run anymore but still want to be involved this is a great way to stay involved in the sport. If you are anal retentive like me, then this is the job for you, so let the club know. See you at the races. Bill White - Officially Retired from the Board

The votes are in and a new board has been elected. We still have two vital positions that are not yet filled. Those positions are Course Marshal and Results/Registration. We would be very grateful if some folks would step up to work in these positions. We don’t have to have just one course marshal; we could have a group of course marshals that can take turns. Only one person, however, can be on the board and vote. The duties of the course marshal mostly include helping to load the Pacer truck before the race, driving the Pacer truck to the race early, setting out the course water tables, clocks, etc., marking the course, picking up the course equipment and loading up the truck again then heading back to the office. It does require getting to the course quite early. Results and Registration is another duty that requires an early effort. Are you interested in how a race gets scored? How do clicks of a timer turn into full-fledged race results? We can answer all of these questions. You could learn a cool computer program that would look good on a resume. Again, this is another position that does not require just one person, but only one person can vote on the board. We are ready to teach you some valuable skills! Please

consider working on these two positions.

started at about 46 F, finished at about 65 F. Not good for this distance. The last 4 miles or so were a struggle, partly from the heat, partly from few water stops, but I finished okay time-wise. My brother ran this one also (he lives in Hoover), but he did not fare as well, as he stumbled when he stepped on a drain and ended up tearing the LCL ligament in his right knee and the IT Band in his right leg about mile four. Like a true runner, though, he finished the race. Pre- and Post-Race events for the Mercedes Marathon are first class. With this new course, they should increase the number of participants significantly. It turns out that there were 57 people that registered for the 3N3 Challenge, and 44 that managed to finish all three races, and we received our finisher medals at the Mercedes awards table after the race. Of the three races, Mobile’s course now may be the most difficult of the three. It certainly is my favorite.

Bill’s finish times were 4:12:46 for Rocket City,

4:07:31 for First Light, and 4:15:55 for the

Mercedes Marathon. Nice job Bill!
