Rustenburg – Operation Plati- num Belt yielded positive results yet again, when a Mozambican national sought for house rob- bery, was arrested in Rustenburg. Cannabis worth R15 000 and an unlicensed firearm was seized during the operation. Another house-robbery suspect (30) was arrested on Tuesday, 22 July, in Bapong (Brits). His accomplice is still at large. Ac- cording to reports, the two armed suspects made off with an undis- closed amount of cash and three cell phones. In an unrelated case, the Police arrested three dagga dealers in Boitekong, who were found in possession of 258 bags of dagga with the estimated street value of R15 000. The trio, aged between 36 and 64, is due to appear in the Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court soon, facing charges of dealing in dagga. In the meantime, a suspect was arrested in Marikana for the pos- session of an unlicensed firearm, 23 July. The firearm was stolen in 2010 during a housebreaking in the Eastern Cape. The 32-year- old man is set to appear in the Garankuwa Magistrates’ Court. Thirty-one drivers were arrested for drunk driving and eight vehi- cles were impounded for various reasons, among them two gov- ernment vehicles impounded in the early hours of Thursday morn- ing, 17 July. More than 359 motorists were stopped and checked, 1 180 vehi- cles were scanned with the Num- ber Plate Recognition System (NPRS) and 44 notices for vary- ing defaults were issued during the operation. North West MEC for Community Safety and Transport Manage- ment, Gaoage Oageng Molapisi, expressed his concern over the high rate of drunk driving cases and lives lost because of it, say- ing, “We need to take action and become responsible road users to save the lives of our people”. He said road safety begins with one individual and drunk driving will never be tolerated. Station manager Weyland Both- ma says it would appear that the collision between the mo- torcycle and a vehicle occurred when the motorcycle attempted a turn which was not seen or anticipated by the driver of the vehicle. Paramedics were on the scene within minutes and treated the biker for a minor concussion and an injury to his left elbow before he was transported to hospital for further medical care. Police seized eight packets of CAT, seven packages of TIK and ten blocks of drugs containing cocaine and heroin, all with an estimated street value of R4 500. The suspects are due to appear in the Bafokeng Magistrates’ Court soon. Nigerian nationals busted for drugs, Rtb Stolen cattle recovered (NW) North West – Nineteen head of cattle stolen in the North West were recovered from a farm near Klerkskraal on Wednesday, 16 July. Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone re- ports that a tip-off led to the po- lice spotting a truck carrying eight head of cattle. The 33-year old driver, who was questioned and arrested, led police to the farm where eleven additional head of stolen cattle were found. The farmers who reported stock theft were invited to inspect the recovered cattle and identified all nineteen the animals linked to five cases of stock theft in the vicin- ity of Leeudoringstad, Makwassie and Klerkskraal. A second suspect, the 42-year-old owner of the farm where the cattle were held, was arrested for the possession of suspected stolen live stock worth R290 000. Both accused appeared in the Venters- dorp Magistrates’ Court on Mon- day, 21 July, and were remanded in custody until their formal bail application on 25 July. North West – Operation Plati- num Belt is continuing to achieve important successes since its implementation in June this year, and this week was responsible for the recovery of two stolen vehicles. Colonel Sabata Mokwagbone of the provincial SAPS communica- tion centre reports that police re- ceived a tip-off on Thursday, 17 July, which led them to a house in Skandaf Section in Majakaneng. They raided the premises and arrested a 22-year-old suspect in connection with the theft of a white Opel Corsa stolen from outside a Buffelspoort restaurant on Saturday, 24 April this year. The suspect was charged with the possession of suspected stolen property and will appear in court soon. A white Nissan 1400 with Gauteng registration hijacked at KwaThema near Springs in Gauteng on 18 July 2011, was recovered from Masosobane in Phokeng on Saturday, 19 July. Police apprehended two men aged 42 and 59 who will soon appear in the Bafokeng Magis- trates’ Court on charges of the possession of suspected stolen goods. The community of Mooifontein were applauded by provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Zukiswa Mbombo for not taking the law into their own hands last weekend when a man was allegedly set alight in Uitkyk Village on Friday, 18 July. Colonel Sabata says a 51-year- old man’s hands and feet were bound with barbed wire and his premises surrounded by com- munity members to keep him restrained until the police arrived at about 21:00. The suspect al- legedly owned up to killing his 35-year old victim who was burn- ing when the police arrived on the scene. The victim was trans- ported to the Gelukspan Hospital where he was certified dead on arrival. The suspect was arrest- ed and appeared in the Itsoseng Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 21 July. The motive for the mur- der is still unknown. North West police during the pe- riod from 13 to 20 July arrested 719 suspects on charges of con- tact, contact related, property re- lated and various other crimes. The arrests include four for mur- der, 141 for common assault and assault with the intent of griev- ous bodily harm, 31 for residen- tial and business burglary, 38 for driving under the influence of al- cohol, 97 for drug related crimes, fourteen for aggravated robbery and 27 undocumented persons. During these day-to-day opera- tions, police also seized drugs such as nyaope, cat, mandrax, dagga and heroine as well as illegal cigarettes and recovered dangerous weapons, livestock and numerous electrical appli- ances. Most of the suspects have al- ready appeared in the province’s courts. Dealers, House-Breakers & Firearms “Farm Murders should be prioritised by Government” Civil rights organisation AfriForum has welcomed the announcement by Minister of Police, Nkosinathi Nhleko in Parliament, 21 July, that farm murders should be pri- oritised. Minister Nhleko said in response to a parliamentary question by the Freedom Front Plus that farm attacks and farm murders should be prioritised by Government. On 26 June 2014 AfriForum sub- mitted a petition with the names of 60 000 South Africans to the Of- fice of the Minister of Police with a report containing case studies reflecting the brutality of farm murders. The Ministry gave the undertaking that they will study the report and that a follow-up meeting with Min- ister Nhleko could be scheduled. “AfriForum believes in construc- tive solutions. The only sustainable solution is cooperation between civil society and the Police. Our more than 130 branch structures across the country are busy establishing safety initiatives. We are executing all activities in cooperation with the Police, and we want to find a solution to- gether for the safeguarding of our country’s food producers and their workers,” Ernst Roets, Deputy CEO of AfriForum said. “It’s the most welcome news that Minister Nhleko acknowledges that farm murders are a crisis that needs urgent intervention by the SAPS. A focused strategy will be the right start to a sustainable so- lution.” The South African Human Rights Commission earlier this month confirmed to AfriForum, that they will hold a public trial about farm murders in the coun- try, as a result of a formal request submitted by the civil rights group.
