DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

Monday, September 19: Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff, Johannesburg

!

Johannesburg is one of Africa’s biggest and most vibrant cities. It is the economic capital of Africa and the gateway to Southern Africa. The old city is a multicultural mixture of traditional medicine shops, Chinese restaurants, taxi ranks and ultra-modern skyscrapers. There are excellent museums, art galleries and organized tours of historical and political interest. The shopping is Southern Africa’s best and the many restaurants cater to all tastes.

Johannesburg is a vibrant city undergoing an urban revival. Tucked among these exquisite surroundings, Four Seasons Hotel the Westcliff, Johannesburg, the only hillside hotel in the city, boasts a luxurious allure to match its prestigious location. Most guest rooms at this iconic urban resort overlook nearly 50 miles of the world’s largest man-made forest – a welcoming respite from hectic business affairs or busy days spent exploring.

On arrival at the Johannesburg airport you’ll be met and transferred to the Four Seasons Westcliff Hotel. Though check-in is at 3 p.m., we can arrange luggage storage if you arrive before this time. There’s time for meeting fellow Members and mingling with Oxford Club staff over drinks before heading into one of the hotel’s superb restaurants for a lively welcome dinner.

The trip will again be hosted by Oxford Club friend and lifestyle expert Fritz Satran. Born and raised in Vienna, Fritz founded AESU Travel in 1977 on the idea of increasing global understanding

through travel. Over the years, Fritz and his staff have conducted high-end tours around the world for many prestigious groups and universities, including The Johns Hopkins University Trustees, the Baltimore Opera and, of course, The Oxford Club. Driven by a belief in the idea of travel with a purpose, Fritz specializes in creating unique and flawlessly executed travel experiences.

One of our Oxford Club travel alumni raves about Fritz's personable first-class service, saying: “When you travel with Fritz, you know that absolutely everything is going to be all right.

As well as highly pleasurable! He is a wealth of information on all aspects of travel and as an Austrian living between Europe and the States, he has a unique perspective on global matters. He also happens to be great fun and you’ll enjoy sitting down for a coffee or glass of wine and discussing life with him and his team.”

Tuesday, September 20: Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff, Johannesburg: Investment Seminar * Private Tour of Diamond Business

Over the last 20 years, the single biggest determinant of South Africa’s economic growth has been global growth. Given that South Africa is a small open economy, this should come as little surprise. However, what this means is that to form an understanding of where the South Africa economy will be headed in 2017, we first need to examine global economic prospects before considering internal factors.

So this morning we’ll sit down together for our first investment seminar, where you’ll hear from some of South Africa’s most savvy financial minds. They’ll brief you on the state of the country’s political and economic climate before providing their

local perspectives on the country’s utilities and resource markets, specifically the diamond and gold fields. We are lining up speakers for this special morning and will hear from a specialist commodities producer, as well as one of the city’s leading brokerage firms.

You’ll hear today from your host, Karim Rahemtulla, Co-Founder, Beyond the Dollar LLC and Editor, Beyond the Dollar. He will be traveling with you through the program, allowing you to have full access to him and his financial insights!

Author of the best-selling book Where in the World Should I Invest? Karim has covered international markets and the global movements of money for more than 20 years. With an expertise in emerging markets, options trading and energy, he’s regarded as one of the country’s foremost resource and developing world analysts. His focus is on finding opportunities “beyond the dollar” for investors looking to diversify their assets and lifestyle to include borderless investing.

Educated in England, Canada and the United States, Karim is fluent in several languages. His undergraduate studies were completed in economics/foreign languages, and his graduate coursework was completed in finance. Karim is also regarded as

Page 5: Oxford Club South Africa 2016events.oxfordclub.com/South-Africa.pdf · South Africa’s economic growth has been global growth. Given that South Africa is a small open economy, this

one of the country’s foremost innovators in options trading, with strategies ranging from income to aggressive speculation. On such merits, he travels the world regularly, seeking out the best investment opportunities, and is a featured speaker at more than a dozen frontline conferences annually.

After lunch at the hotel we’ll set off for an exciting excursion into the city, beginning with a behind-the-scenes visit to a diamond wholesaler. Thanks to Pillar One advisor and currency trader Michael Checkan, you’ll receive special Oxford Club rates if you wish to purchase a diamond or gold jewelry from one of the country’s premier wholesalers.

We’ll then head to the lively, artsy neighborhood of Parkhurst. Filled with great shops, home decor boutiques, and charming restaurants, this village is a great spot to pick up a few souvenirs before leaving the city. You’ll have time to stroll the main 4th street, popping into stores or pubs, before dinner at one of its renowned bistros.

Included Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Wednesday, September 21: Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff, Johannesburg * Visit to Soweto

This morning we’ll make a visit to Soweto, the township about 30 minutes west of the heart of Johannesburg. As a traveler of a certain age, the word Soweto does not conjure up images of walking tours and pub crawls. Instead, what pops into most minds is the poverty and violence in the largest township in South Africa. The reality, of course, is a different thing. The best way to experience the true and modern face of Soweto is to visit with a local.

Page 6: Oxford Club South Africa 2016events.oxfordclub.com/South-Africa.pdf · South Africa’s economic growth has been global growth. Given that South Africa is a small open economy, this

The South West Townships, or Soweto, outside of Johannesburg have been around for a long time and will most likely be around even longer. Home to more than 1 million people, Soweto is the only place in the world where two Nobel Peace Prize-winners once lived on the same street (Nelson Mandela and Bishop Desmond Tutu) and it’s of course where the Soweto Uprising of 1976 occurred. These mass protests had an incredible effect; afterwards the world began to see the realities of the apartheid system, and resistance leaders within the country began to mobilize and train in new and different ways. It’s with this historical lens that we’ll see Soweto. But the township of the 1970s and 1980s is most definitely not the Soweto of today.

No visit to South Africa is complete without an afternoon here.

We’ll have lunch in the city before a free afternoon at the hotel. Enjoy the grounds, the gorgeous swimming pool and the hotel’s world-class spa! Or gather at the bar to sample some of South Africa’s premier wines and talk over the day’s events. This evening we’ll enjoy another special and spectacular meal together.

Included Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Thursday, September 22: Fly to &Beyond Ngala Safari Lodge, Kruger National Park

Kruger National Park is South Africa's premier private game viewing destination. It was here that the southern African safari began, and today this famous reserve offers exceptional game viewing and equally exceptional accommodations. Two perennial rivers, the Sabi and the Sand, flow through this game park, sustaining the diverse fauna and flora of the area.

The success of leopard viewing within the park is legendary. Elephants, lions, rhinos, buffaloes, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras and a vast variety of antelopes and other species can be closely observed in their natural environment.

Page 7: Oxford Club South Africa 2016events.oxfordclub.com/South-Africa.pdf · South Africa’s economic growth has been global growth. Given that South Africa is a small open economy, this

This morning we’ll pack up for our flight to Kruger National Park. We’ll leave from the local Wilson airport and fly directly to the park. Our bags will be whisked away and found in our rooms after a 15-minute ride through the bush.

Deep in the bushveld overlooking a water hole and an open plain lies a lodge that pulses to the r h y t h m o f A f r i c a ’s heartbeat. &Beyond Ngala Safari Lodge has earned a reputation of a “luxury home in the bush.”

A timeless, unhurried atmosphere, combined with the quaint traditions of a bygone era, creates

an aura of romance and nostalgia. This old-world haven in the midst of the African bush charms with its colonial antiques, silver cutlery and crystal glassware. Style and grace mingle faultlessly with the rugged natural beauty of the setting, as manicured lawns give way to dense mopane thickets and wild animals saunter down to drink at the water hole.

Nature is never far at &Beyond Ngala, with breakfast and lunch served in the shade of an enormous weeping boere bean tree. A walled courtyard provides a sheltered space to indulge in sumptuous cuisine, while the boma creates a dramatic setting for fire-lit dinners. Secret nooks and crannies with cushy sofas are ideal for quiet hours of contemplation in the leafy shade.

Kruger National Park is home to an astonishing variety of wildlife – including over 200 mammal and 300 bird species. Morning and evening safaris are enjoyed in open safari vehicles where close encounters with the Big 5 – cape buffalo, lion, leopard, rhino and elephant – are a regular occurrence.

Please gather for a cocktail overlooking the water hole, as we begin a never-to-be-forgotten safari in big-five game country. We’ll also enjoy high tea at the lodge before setting off for our first game drive this afternoon.

After fantastic discoveries in the bush with outstanding guides and trackers, we’ll stop for a sundowner as we watch elephants drink from a river, see rhinos lumber through the plains or spot a leopard chase prey at dusk.

Accommodation for three nights at the &Beyond Ngala Safari Lodge with all meals, drinks and safari activities included.

Wednesday, September 28: Mount Nelson Hotel, Cape Town * Investment Seminar * Dinner and Wine Tasting in Stellenbosch

This morning we’ll convene for our second informative seminar focusing on the country’s current investment climate – and how you can take advantage of the growth opportunities here. Today’s South Africa is one of the most sophisticated, diverse and promising emerging markets around the globe. Because of its strategic location at the tip of the African continent, it offers market opportunities that lie within its borders, but even more importantly, it is a gateway to the rest of the continent, a market of about 1 billion people.

Page 12: Oxford Club South Africa 2016events.oxfordclub.com/South-Africa.pdf · South Africa’s economic growth has been global growth. Given that South Africa is a small open economy, this

South Africa is the economic powerhouse of Africa and forms part of the BRICS group of countries with Brazil, Russia, India and China. It has a favorable demographic profile and its rapidly expanding middle class has growing spending power. Its wealth of natural resources (including coal,

platinum, gold, iron ore, manganese nickel, uranium and chromium) has brought the country increased attention from international exploration companies, particularly in the oil and gas sector. After lunch we’ll set off for the gorgeous South African wine country, traveling east from Cape Town to Stellenbosch, a former Dutch settlement with unique architecture visible everywhere. We’ll spend some time peeking around the lovely streets and shops of the town before a wine tasting on our way to dinner in the heart of the wine country.

Nestled between majestic mountains and overlooking the vineyards of Stellenbosch is Delaire Graff, a world-leading destination for wine, art and hospitality in an unrivaled setting. The incredible views provide the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable meal. This Relais & Châteaux hotel and restaurant also has a diamond boutique, art gallery and private tasting room, so you might have another chance to go home with a spectacular souvenir!

Included Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Thursday, September 29: Mount Nelson Hotel, Cape Town * Full Day Sightseeing: Table Mountain and Cape of Good Hope

After breakfast this morning we’ll set off for a full day of touring in this incredible landscape. First off: a trip up Table Mountain, the most iconic landmark of South Africa and full of many surprises that wait to be discovered. It is much more than a scenic photograph background or a place from where you can take a breathtaking photo of Cape Town. There are about 2,200 species of plants found on Table Mountain and 1,470 floral species. Many of these plants and flowers are endemic to this mountain. We’ll take the cable car to the top for stupendous views of the city and ocean.

Page 13: Oxford Club South Africa 2016events.oxfordclub.com/South-Africa.pdf · South Africa’s economic growth has been global growth. Given that South Africa is a small open economy, this

From there we head south to the tip of Africa. (Or nearly – technically there is one point along the coast that is farther south, but who’s counting!)

The discovery of the Cape of Good Hope – a geographic location with one of the most romantic names in the world – is due to Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Dias. At the end of the 15th century, Portugal was obsessed with discovering the seaway to India, sending one expedition after another. In 1487, this task was entrusted to Dias.

His voyage, as well as his predecessors', was filled with adventures, shooting incidents with local tribes and threats of mutiny from his crew. Dias ended up sailing only around Africa thinking that if he continued to sail forward, he would arrive in India sooner or later. After coming to this logical conclusion he turned around, and on his way home in May of 1488, he landed at what he thought was the southernmost point of Africa.

Today the going is a little easier. A beautiful drive from town leads to the point, from where you can take a cable car if you don’t wish to walk. Watch out for the baboons that may hide out under the

cars! Before heading to lunch we’ll also visit Boulders Beach, home to flocks of penguins that waddle up and down the beach. As you walk along the boardwalk, you’ll see their nests in the sand.

We’ll have lunch at a spectacular culinary spot en route back to Cape Town. This evening we have our fun-filled farewell dinner at the hotel.

Included Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Friday, September 30: Departure from Cape Town

The program ends this morning with airport transfers for all guests who will be flying out today.
