What are they looking for?
We are seeking men and women from all backgrounds who will have a
thoughtful, caring and compassionate approach to medical practice.
The selection process has two stages. Selection for the first stage
depends on academic achievement and evidence of motivationtowards a career in medicine (Predicted grades and Personal
Statement).
In the second stage we use a structured series of interviews and tasks to
judge how considered and realistic is your motivation for medicine,
and your personal qualities such as determination, interest in people
and potential capacity to cope with stress.
Many schools require voluntary work experience in a caring capacity.
Applicants should be aware that the school may request confirmation of
their work experience.

Work Experience
http://www.medicalcareers.nhs.uk/
Work experience is valuable for two main reasons:
1. It gives you a taste of medicine, to make sure youknow that medicine is right for you.
2. It is expected for your medical school application andinterview. What you have learned from the experiencecan make you stand out from the crowd.
Try to get as much experience as you feasibly can; startgaining it as early as you can. What you want to makesure of is that you have something that you can talkabout on your personal statement and at interview.

Even more selective for
International Students
All courses at Oxford are highly selective!
Why are the success rates lower for international students?
Like all UK Universities, medicine has a government
imposed quota for International students.
Students cluster around the most competitive subjects.
Average 20%
Outside the UK 11.8%
EU 11.1%
Non EU 12.2%

The Cambridge Difference It is important to note that undergraduate admissions
at Cambridge are handled by the individual Colleges.
The majority of applicants specify a College on theirapplication, but it is also possible to make an OpenApplication.
If you do this, your application will be allocated bycomputer to a College which, in that year, has fewerthan the average number of applications per place.
From then on, an Open Application is treated like all
others to that College.

All entry requirements can be found at:www.admissions.ox.ac.uk/international-students

Excellent grades will not guarantee a place at Oxford
Specific subjects may be required for some courses
Extra curricular activities are often not taken into
account - Purely academic criteria. However some extra curricular activities will show that
the student is a balanced person and able to cope with
the stresses of work and still have time for other
activities. Anything subject related is always a bonus.

eventually be teaching them.
Ifirst met a professor who is an expert in Law. She asked me
several questions about my decision towards the course. Then, I
started to turn that point into a conversation. After 10 minutes ofconversation, I decided to ask her questions related to her
publications. This conversation took major role in the entire

The Tutors want to see if the student:
is passionate about the course
is comfortable and willing to discuss ideas that are beyond the IB syllabus
can use what they have learnt so far to explore new ideas and topics
is willing to analyze a topic from different perspectives without being
defensive of own ideas.
The tutors often start off with a discussion about what the student haslearnt in high school and they then gently move the student beyond the
high school curriculum.
The student is not supposed to be an expert on university level content,
but must be willing to explore together with the tutor. The objective of the interview is to see how well the student will function
within the Oxbridge Tutorial/Supervision System where they sit down
with their tutor, who is an expert in the field, and one or two other
students to discuss the weeks topic, papers they have written, etc.

With NIST Counselors in semester 2 of Year 12
With Patana teachers and counselors after invitation to
interview at Oxbridge (December Year 13)
Successful Oxbridge Applicants 2012: Manyof the mock questions came up in the real interview. I am
really glad that I was well prepared.
I learnedquite a lot of useful physics from that mock interview
session. The way it was conducted was rather similar to the
interviewactually.

Passion and Action
Make sure it is really a course you want to study. Show evidence ofexceptional passion for the subject.
This passion has driven you to explore the subject at ahigher level (and wider) than required in high school.
Internships, research journals, field trips, books, personal projects, community service, shadow aresearch student at a local university, work experiencein a laboratory, etc.
No matter how great the passion for a subject, theresno point applying to Oxbridge unless you are alreadyextremely well qualified academically.
Extended essay topic should relate to your course

Reading is probably the most helpful thing youcan do at this stage. Read widely around thesubject.
This will give you things to talk about in theinterview (an interview could focus mainly onyour reading)
Also important for putting on the personalstatement
Often just going to the BBC website and searchingfor the subject of interest will bring up hundreds
of news articles relating to the subject.
Students need to read beyond
the course requirements in high school

Groundbreaking Texts
The important thing here is to go back to primarysources: not books about books, but the originalbooks themselves.
For scientists, this may mean reading lab reports
and journals to get first-hand researchinformation.
For arts students, historical texts and importantcontemporary thinkers should form the basis ofhis/her reading.
If a theologian, read some of the Bible.
If an English student, read Shakespeare.
