STORAGE

® Drain the fuel tankPrepare your chipper-shredder for storage at the endof the season or if the unit will not be used for 30 daysor more.

WARNING: NEVER STORE MACHINEWITH FUEL IN THE FUEL TANK INSIDEOF BUILDING WHERE FUMES MAYREACH AN OPEN FLAME OR SPARK, ORWHERE IGNITION SOURCES AREPRESENT SUCH AS HOT WATER ANDSPACE HEATERS, FURNACES, CLOTHESDRYERS, STOVES, ELECTRIC MOTORS,ETC.

NOTE: A yearly check-up by your local Sears ServiceCenter is a good way to make certain your chipper-shredder will provide maximum performance for thenext season

CHIPPER-SHREDDERe Clean the chipper-shredder thoroughly.

® Wipe unit with an oiled rag to prevent rust (use alight oil or silicone)

ENGINEIMPORTANT: IT IS IMPORTANT TO PREVENTGUM DEPOSITS FROM FORMING IN ESSENTIALFUEL SYSTEM PARTS SUCH AS CARBURETOR,FUEL FILTER, FUEL HOSE, OR TANK DURINGSTORAGE. ALSO, EXPERIENCE INDICATES THATALCOHOL BLENDED FUELS (CALLED GASOHOLOR USING ETHANOL OR METHANOL) CANATTRACT MOISTURE WHICH LEADS TO SEPARA-TION AND FORMATION OF ACIDS DURING STOR-AGE. ACIDIC GAS CAN DAMAGE THE FUEL SYS-TEM OF AN ENGINE WHILE IN STORAGE

® Start the engine and let it run until the fuel lines andcarburetor are empty

e Never use engine or carburetor cleaner products inthe fuel tank or permanent damage may occur

e Use fresh fuel next season.

NOTE: Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable alternative inminimizing the formation of fuel gum deposits duringstorage. Add stabilizer to gasoline in fuel tank or stor-age container. Always follow the mix ratio found onstabilizer container Run engine at least 10 minutesafter adding stabilizer to allow the stabilizer to reachthe carburetor. Do not drain the gas tank and carbure-tor if using fuel stabilizer

e Drain all the oil from the crankcase (this should bedone after the engine has been operated and is stillwarm) and refill the crankcase with fresh oil

• If you have drained the fuel tank, protect the insideof the engine as follows Remove spark plug, pourapproximately 1/2 ounce (approximately one table-spoon) of engine oil into cylinder and crank slowlyto distribute oil. Replace spark plug.

OTHERe Do not store gasoline from one season to another

® Replace your gasoline can if your can starts to rustRust and/or dirt in your gasoline will cause problems

e Store unit in a clean, dry area Do not store next tocorrosive materials, such as fertilizer

NOTE: If storing in an unventilated or metal storageshed, be certain to rustproof the equipment by coatingwith a light oil or silicone.

NGTE:Usecautionwhenremovingthe blade to avoidcontacting the weld bolts on the housing_

e When sharpening the blade, follow the originalangle of grind as a guide. It is extremely importantthat each cutting edge receives an equal amount ofgrinding to prevent an unbalanced blade. An unbal-anced blade will cause excessive vibration whenrotating at high speeds and may cause damage tothe unit

e The blade can be tested for balance by balancing iton a round shaft screwdriver or nail. Remove metalfrom the heavy side until it is balanced evenly. Seefigure 22_

CARBURETORADJUSTMENTWARNING: IF ANY ADJUSTMENTS AREMADE TO THE ENGINE WHILE THE

ENGINE IS RUNNING (E.G. CARBURE-TOR)p KEEP CLEAR OF ALL MOVINGPARTS. BE CAREFUL OF HEATED SUR-FACES AND MUFFLER.

Minor carburetor adjustment may be required to com-pensate for differences in fuel, temperature, altitudeor load

NOTE: A DIRTY AIR CLEANER WILL CAUSEENGINE TO RUN ROUGH. BE CERTAIN AIRCLEANER IS CLEAN AND ATTACHED TO THECARBURETOR BEFORE ADJUSTING CARBURE-TOR. DO NOT MAKE UNNECESSARY ADJUST-MENTS FACTORY SETTINGS ARE SATISFACTO-RY FOR MOST APPLICATIONS AND CONDITIONS

Never attempt to change maximum engine speed It ispre-set at the factory and should be changed only bya qualified service technician who has the necessaryequipment

The carburetor may need re-adjusting if engine lackspower or does not idle properly If adjustments areneeded, proceed as follows

e Close needle valve (see figure 23) clockwise((_) finger tight only. Forcing may cause damage. Then open 1-1/2 turns counterclockwise ( ,'_ )

® Start engine and allow to warm for five minutes

e Close needle valve clockwise (,'-_) until enginestarts to lose speed (lean mixture). Then slowlyopen needle valve counterclockwise (,'_) untilengine JUST BEGINS to run unevenly. This mix-ture should be rich enough for best performanceunder load

O Rotate throttle counterclockwise (,'_) and holdagainst throttle stop.

If engine idles, no further adjustment is necessary.

If engine idles too fast, turn idle speed adjustingscrew counterclockwise (_) until slower speed isobtained.

O

If engine dies, turn idle speed adjusting screw 1/4turn clockwise (_) Place throttle control in FASTposition and restart engine.

Move throttle control to IDLE position. If enginedoes not idle, repeat third stepTest the engine by using the chipper-shredder Ifengine tends to stall or die out, it usually indicatesthat the mixture is slightly lean and it may be nec-essary to open ("_) the needle valve slightly toprovide a richer mixture This richer mixture maycause a slight unevenness in idling.
