Culture, identity, and language are central to learning, especially for multilingual students. We call this a Language Lens™. When we teach and lead with a Language Lens, we intentionally create learning environments in classrooms K-12 that are equitable, language-rich, and personalized, incorporating students’ first language/mother tongue and valuing multilingualism this course, participants will be part of a community of practice comprised of classroom teachers, language specialists and leaders from English as an Additional Language (EAL) classrooms and ALL classrooms throughout a school. SARAH OTTOW, Course InstructorSarah Ottow is a professional development specialist, her work focuses on improving cultural understanding, communication, andcollaboration. She enjoys working in public and private schools, non-profit organizations, and corporations across the US andinternationally, teaching learners from pre-K to adults and working with students and families from over 40 different languagegroups. Early in her career, she put herself in her students’ shoes, so to speak, when she lived and taught in Puerto Rico as avoluntary language learner. More recently in her work as a consultant in schools and organizations across the US andinternationally, she continues to be an ambassador for language learners and an active multilingual citizen of the global community.After over a decade of teaching, coaching and training others, in 2015, Sarah created the professional development and consultingorganization, Confianza, whose sole focus is supporting schools and organizations around all things “ELL”: Equity, Language &Literacy.  Sarah has a master’s in curriculum and instruction with a focus on social justice in urban education and certifications ingeneral education, English as a Second Language, bilingual education (Spanish), reading, and coaching/mentoring. She has alsoearned a Leadership Certificate in Diversity and Inclusion from eCornell to strengthen her knowledge base and support for leadersinside and outside of education. Sarah founded Confianza in 2015. Sarah is also the author of The Language Lens for ContentClassrooms: A Guide for K-12 Educators of English and Academic Language Learners published by Learning Sciences International.

Module Planning and Teaching with a Language LensDiscover and implement key aspects of academic language to include in any lesson plan in any content area. In thismodule, participants will: Unpack features of academic language and the relationship between language and culturein any content area; Integrate listening, speaking, reading and writing strategies throughout lessons; See whatlanguage-rich, content-based instruction looks like and consider ways to transfer to face-to-face, remote, and hybridteaching environments.

ModuleAssessing with a Language LensReduce cultural and linguistic bias in classroom-based assessments and empower students through self-assessmentand peer-assessment methods. In this module, participants will: Explore strategies for meaningful, language-richformative and summative assessments; Try out proven tips for making classroom-based assessments accessible,valid and more equitable; See ways for assessing student output in any content area and consider ways to transferto face-to-face, remote, and hybrid teaching environments; Work on her/his own personalized action plan toimplement this professional learning to their own practice (this is the capstone project due at the end of the course).

Foundations in Language and CultureExamine belief systems and research-based practices for serving culturally and linguistically diverse students, as well as explorestrategies for driving your own professional learning through an intentional planning approach. In this module, participants will:Drive their own professional learning by taking the Language Lens Self-Assessment to find strengths and areas of improvement;Review key background building information on language and culture, plus considerations for school wide changes towards equity;Analyze ways to get to know students and set goals for their language development; Connect to our online community by sharinggoals for practice and discussing connections to the videos and readings.
