The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers named him a finalist in the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Awards for his classical work, "Forevermore." He was also honored as a Shining Student in the April 2013 edition of OC Family magazine in recognition of his musical accomplishments. Finally, during a recent concert at Steamers Jazz Club & Cafe with the Brethren Christian High School 8 O'Clock Jazz Band, Orange County based Friends of Jazz presented Marc with a scholarship, noting his accomplishments in jazz composition. These honors mark the fourth recognition he has received since February when he was named a recipient of the 2013 ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award (originally noted in the March 17 edition of OCVarsity Arts) for his original jazz composition titled "A Lizard's Blues." 2013 PROFESSIONAL OPERA SINGERS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL VOCAL COMPETITION Orange County high school students were among the winners in the 2013 Professional Opera Singers Association Seventh Annual Vocal Competition. The event was held on March 24 at Chapman University. Brethren Christian sophomore, Christiaan Westerkamp, was awarded first place in Level III for students age 15-18. Claire Dwyer of Sage Hill was awarded first place in Level II for students age 12-14. Other award winners in Level III include, Alex Granito, 2nd place, and Alexander Papandrea, 3rd place, both of Santa Margarita Catholic High School. STUDENT COMPOSER CONTINUES TO RECEIVE RECOGNITION

Marc Harris, a senior at Brethren Christian High School in Huntington Beach, continues to receive honorsfor his accomplishments in music composition. AUHSD 13th ANNUAL STUDENT ART AND PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

On April 22, the Anaheim Union High School District (AUHSD) celebrated its 13th Annual Student Art andPhotography Exhibition, "Color and Light," at MUZEO in Anaheim. For many of the visual arts students, it isthe first time to be recognized for excellence.

More than 250 pieces of student artwork from 18 schools were on display inside MUZEO. In the plazaoutside, theater students from Brookhurst Junior High School performed original works as part of the "LivingMuseum" and the Loara High School Jazz Ensemble performed jazz classics. The event was photographedby students from John F. Kennedy High School. Much of the event is underwritten by the AUHSD Foundationand is also supported by donations from organizations such as the Anaheim Arts Council, AssistanceLeague® of Anaheim, Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim, Ebell Club of Anaheim, Fullerton College ArtDepartment and from individual community members.

Visual arts students received awards for outstanding artwork in 23 categories.

Superintendent's Choice: – 1st place, Adam Wysocki, Hope School; 2nd place, Denise Barrios, HopeSchool; 3rd place, Jonathan Lanning, Hope School

AMERICAN DRUM LINE ASSOCIATION (ADLA) SEMI-FINALS

The American Drum Line Association had its semifinal competition on April 21 at King High School inRiverside. The top 33 highs schools in each division (A, B, C, Open, World, Concert and Independent) wereinvited to compete. The top teams in each division move onto the finals at Long Beach City College thisweekend (final results to be posted in Varsity Arts on May 5). The Tustin Area Council for Fine Arts announced awards for their annual student art invitational on April 16.The show, which is limited to 400 entries, invites teachers in middle and high schools in the Tustin area tosubmit work from their classes. Cash stipends are given to teachers that submit at least 7 pieces. Cashprizes are also given to students who are named for awards. The pieces are on display at the Senior Centerat 2011 C Street in Tustin during the month of April. The Tustin Area Council for Fine Arts also providesfunding for scholaships and other arts endeavors in the Tustin area. The winners from this year's invitationalinclude:
