FUTURE STARS, BREAKING SCENES, NEW SOUNDS... Edited by Lisa Wright
A s a young producer it’s hard to get recognition or
even taken seriously. That is until Harvey
Shergill emerged as the new talent from West
London, although he had been touring the
country with many stars, Shergill has dedicated his latest track
for the production Outsider. “It’s
great to represent my home through
my music. I was thrilled when I was
asked to create the track for Outsider,
which as you probably know is
completely set in my area,” Shergill
says about his hometown.
“Outsider was a whole new
experience for me as I had never produced sound tracks for
films, but I honestly enjoyed working alongside the team, I
would definitely do it again!” His work with Outsider has
encouraged him to take a new direction as a music producer for
movies, “ After creating the sound effects, backing music and
tracks for Outsider I have been inspired to work to think inside
the British film industry as I have seen the importance of our
music industry and film industry collaborating during the
production.”
The producer added his own style to the tracks as a mark of
his first production, his input is shown throughout the movie
and trailer, he chooses to be modest about his work. “I can’t
take all the credit for my work as many people had helped me
through almost every stage of the music production.”
Shergill’s work speaks for itself, although he has been
stereotyped as an inexperienced producer his quality of work
has competed with many major music producers in the scene.
So far he has worked with Coldplay, Lostprophets, Arctic
Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs, Muse and The Kooks. Other influences
are Shergill’s love for contemporary R & B, and British Asian
songs; although he has not yet decided on if he’s going into any
of those directions. “R & B inspires me as much as rock. So
does soul and even pop,” says Shergill before his tour in
Birmingham.
“I’ve recently been signed to Echo Records Artists as a new
producer, and I would like to thank the Outsider team as their
recognition of my work had lead to this opportunity.” After
being signed to the record Shergill has been in the process of
launching new artists and creating new looks for the artists
signed already to Echo Records Artists. “I was shocked, in a
good way, when I found out that the producers of Outsider had
recommended me to the record, I had always wanted to be
apart of the label considering their history.”
Shergill admitted one of the main problems with the
Outsider, “We had to do hours of research to get the right
sounds that we wanted for the music, it was hard to create
something new, original and memorable – eventually we came
up with a totally different style for the horror/ thriller movie,
it will be different from the typical Psycho music.
“As soon as I met the directors of Outsider in person we
clicked.” Shergill says. It seems as though the close bond
between them has developed through their passion for music.
“We all seem to love classic rock! It was a shock because I
wasn’t expecting this from the directors - I thought it would
be all business talk .”

His first album with Echo Records Artists group Mono, who
announced that they will be making their come back later this
year, will feature a short snippet of the Outsider soundtrack,
“I’m just so proud of my work that I want my fans to hear
some of it, and Mono wanted to create their own version of the
song with their own lyrics,” says
Shergill.
With Shergill’s busy schedule we
asked the young producer whether or
not he even had free time. “Well I do
get time to myself, sometimes, but I
prefer not to have too much time on
my hands. ’Cause that would mean
I’m not working hard enough!” Shergill laughs.
Compared to other producers Shergill feels that he can find
inspiration can be found in virtually anything, “Sometimes I
find inspiration through colours, sounds or even from a
conversation, although it may seem weird, it actually works for
me.” This was admittedly the way that Shergill had created
the audio for Outsider, although he still keeps it a secret which
one had influenced him.
With ambitions as high as Shergill’s we hope to hear his
name more often in the film industry as well as the music
industry. “I would first want to work on establishing myself in
the music industry, then I will work towards the film industry.
But I definitely would want to work towards that direction.”
“One thing that I learnt while working with Coldplay is
that I should live for the moment and seize every possible
opportunity that I can get; the main thing is that if I’m happy
about it,” says Shergill behind the scenes of Outsider.
“Outsider has been a memorable experience, it has
definitely made me a better producer; now I consider the little
things when I’m making a new piece of music.”
We talked to the producers of Outsider and have given an
exclusive tip promising the release of the movie sometime
during Halloween. During the production we went behind the
scenes to check out the audio production to Outsider and the
soundtrack to the movie will be releasing exclusively on the
NME channel in end of August. So stay keep watching NME

ABOUT TO BREAK
N EED T O KNOW
Shergill started creating music from the age of 10 when he first began using GarageBand software on his iMac, from this point onwards his ambitions were completely set on becoming a famous music producer.
This year Shergill teamed up with the Arctic Monkeys again to produce their latest album Suck It and See.
Empire takes an exclusive inside look at Outsider as it creeps its
way into cinemas.
T HE STORY IS SIMPLE; GIRL IS BULLIED
AND IS AN OUTCAST AT SCHOOL.
She is tragically raped by drunk boys and then a kind-
hearted boy takes her in to find her in a mental rage.
“It is something new to the British Film Industry.” says Masih,
talking exclusively to Empire. “There is too much realism in
British movies, I want to push the boundaries.” Although it is
pushing the “boundaries”, it still has many competitors over in
the U.S.
The director of Outsider have cast newcomer Daljeeta Juttla as
the leading lady. In this twisted tale, Juttla‟s character—Anita—
the geek is tormented everywhere she goes, after all she endures
at school and outside of school she finally cracks and unleashes
all of her inner rage. “We‟ve used the simple
character of a geek on the outside to gradually
reveal the madness on the inside. Anita trans-
forms from the painfully shy girl to fierce, de-
monic and fearless.”
The „good guy‟ who takes in Anita, Moham-
med Rahman—aka Ray, is left in a state of shock from the sud-
den change in her behaviour. The rest of the cast includes Vishal
Rai, Sonu Chhetri, Kashif Akhtar, and Nic. With a cast like that
we would be expecting the acting to be better than the American
competitor Twilight. Kashif Akhtar is the main bully who
continuously makes Anita‟s school life a misery.
“I love my character! She‟s different from your typical school
geek. Although this is my first film I feel that this will be the most
memorable.” says newcomer, Juttla. As for the rest of the cast
who‟ve had experience with movies still feel that this movie will
be one to remember.

Natalie Portman, announced that because of her injuries from her performance in Black Swan she will be taking a break from her career.
The

Similar films have been
on the big screen before
Twilight (2008)
This movie had plenty of special effects but
that still couldn’t help the acting! Even though
it was popular the critics were right—it didn't do the novel justice. Ouch!
I Spit On Your
Grave (2010)
Although it wasn’t a blockbuster hit it was
definitely better than the original. The only problem was that the murder was too ’raw’. Let just say it was a bit too ...Yuck!
Carrie (1976)
The movie was well known classic. The
change in the character was one of the most
dramatic but today’s generation would find this to be more comical than scary. Although there are little effects used the close ups still scare people.
The Last
House On The Left
(2009) This re-make was not as
good as anticipated. The story carried on for too long, I think the directors forgot about it actually being a horror. Wow.
FILMZ INSIDE THE U.S.
We asked the only
sympathetic male in
the cast about his
feelings on his role,
“Ray‟s role is
something quite
unexpected, the
other men in the
movie oppress the
female; Ray
challenges that by
helping Anita. That‟s basically why I took the role.”, says
Mohammed Rahman.
“We know that the rapists are familiar with Anita as they
bully her at school.”, says Masih. “Our rapists are typical
bullies but because of the alcohol they are unable to control
themselves. The victim victimises the rapists—she does some
crazy shit!” The new film also gave Masih the chance to cre-
ate an entirely original world around the basic story, and in
keeping with the themes. “Although the film would be classed
as your typical rape revenge horror there is a moral to the
story; what goes around comes around.”, laughs Masih.
We went behind the scenes to see how the other cast
members felt about their role. “It‟s definitely something that
I‟ve never done before. Usually I play the „nice guy‟, I wanted
to have the experience of being „evil‟.” says Vishal Rai.
This is a first for all the cast with horror and we hope to
be seeing more of it! When speaking with Masih she says that
she is, experimenting
whilst staying true to hor-
ror”. You can be the judge
of that ...SEM
Outsider is out on 31st
