OUR APPROACHAt Somerset College students are not only provided with the technical expertise they need to develop their skills, but they also complete a learning package which includes language, social and interpersonal development. Unlike other ‘student exchange’ programmes the learning that takes place at Somerset College continues the studies that would take place in Norway. Normal exchange programmes are simply about experiencing the subject and being taught in a different country.

PARTNERSHIPStudents coming to Somerset College from Norway are taught on our vibrant campus in the County town of Taunton. Studies include core subjects (Art and Design), which are also assessed and mapped against the students’ Norwegian qualifications. In addition there are also lessons in foreign languages (French, Spanish, German) and Mathematics and physical education (PE) taught at the college. Norwegian history that are delivered by tutors from Norway, in Norwegian, via a weekly video conferencing session.

Norwegian students work alongside English students to study Media and Communication, in dedicated design studios. This environment enables them to complete all aspects of the Norwegian curriculum and also have experience of English education and practice. All lessons are undertaken in English, which continues to help language development skills.

HOST FAMILIESEach Norwegian student is matched with a ‘host’ family for the duration of their stay. The families are monitored and supported by Somerset College. Host families welcome the student into their home and provide them with the platform to feel relaxed and looked after during their time studying in England. Students are treated as part of the family, and have time to grow friendships with their English peers.

Staying with an English family provides another element of the cultural experience that contributes to students’ personal growth and confidence, helping them to develop language and life skills during their stay.

ENRICHMENTThroughout their stay the Norwegian students will go on a number of organised enrichment activities - including sporting weekends away, trips to shows, and days out to enjoy the many sites and attractions that England has to offer.

LEARNING / ENVIRONMENT

The programme is unique in that it provides Norwegian students with the opportunity to enhance their skills and continue their Norwegian studies in a complementary specialist English college whilst also having the chance to experience a completely different culture.

Message from the PrincipalStudents are the reason we enjoy our work

Our Norwegian students benefit from our warm and vibrant educational environment but they also give so much to us. They enrich the lives of our students and bring greater diversity and understanding such that, together, we create a better world.

At Somerset College we value the dialogue and exchange we have with our students. We value their opinions, and our staff team work with all students to ensure their time with us is fruitful and enjoyable.

TUTORINGStudents coming to Somerset College through the partnership are extremely well supported - before they arrive, when they arrive, throughout their studies and at the inevitable end of their time in England. There is a core tutor from the Media and Communications programme who journeys over to Norway a few months before students are due to arrive in order to meet them, and settle any nerves. This person is then their main tutor throughout their time in England, providing not only their education but also pastoral care and being a direct contact for parents and host families should the need arise.

All students have their learning needs evaluated prior to coming to England to ensure these are fully supported whilst they are here, and that nothing hinders either their experience or learning during this time. A Norwegian support tutor works with the English tutor and makes visits from Norway to see how things are going. Students remain safe and supported at all times whilst they are in England.

ART AND DESIGNThe course offers a creative platform from within the School of Art and Design, allowing students to experiment, question and debate both historic and contemporary issues relating to art and design. The programme aims to develop each student’s competence and knowledge in how art and design has influenced both historic and contemporary perceptions of society.

Academic discourse is sited within the creative arena of the school, where students are encouraged to sample all of the disciplines of art and design (from painting and drawing through to costume and architecture), on a journey where they are supported to grow as ‘creative practitioners’ in a studio environment which facilitates experimentation and play.

The year-long programme helps to contribute to developing the individual’s competence within the different disciplines that span art and design.

OUTLINE /APPROACH

Verity BrookesPresident for University Students

Each year the students elect a president to represent them, and this is what last year’s president said about her experience of her time at Somerset College...

I chose to come to Somerset College to study my BA (Hons) top-up year in Fine Art. When I came to visit the College I immediately knew it was the place for me. I loved the small, intimate environment. This meant there was much more of a focus on the individual student, whereas I felt like just a numberin my previous larger university.

I had a fantastic first year at the College with exceptional support from the tutors, who I felt really wanted me to succeed. The tutors highlighted every student’s individual needs and facilitated their progress whatever their goals were. I found the tutors’ experience and networks within industry definitely helped me flourish.

My tutor found me a teaching placement which I loved! The College offers a fantastic welcoming and diverse environment. Mixing with students aged from 20 to 70 with a wealth of experience from all sorts of backgrounds meant everyone had something different to bring to my studies and made a fantastic first year. The facilities for art and design are second to none with industry equipment available for use which relates to the course. The technicians are at hand to support students all the time. I loved the flexibility to book equipment at any time to suit my timetable.

The social life is fantastic; there is always some-thing going on. Mixing with students from different disciplines is great and we are always bouncing different ideas off each other. I have formed some great new friendships here.

After an initial induction programme, all students are given the opportunity to respond to a set of creative briefs - utilising a variety of media ranging from traditional printmaking through to 35mm photography and beyond…

7YVNYHTTLLUKZ 27 May Return to Norway

The year begins with an intensive Induction Programme where each student is trained to safely use the equipment and facilities within the School of Art and Design.

Thereafter each studio project commences with a briefing followed by an intensive period of research and investigation. The research process is celebrated and seen as a critical part of the creative process. Part way though each project students present there work for a interim ‘critique’. Both staff and students discuss and debate the value of the proposal and offer guidance and support to enable each project to develop into a successful, creative solution.

Throughout the year regular ‘personal tutorials’ take place, where staff meet with students for ‘one-to-one’ discussions focussed on the wellbeing of the student.

Formative assessment (guidance for project development) and summative assessment (final grading of each project) take place throughout the year. The final exam takes place when the students return to Norway.
