Dear Parents and Carers

I believe passionately that children should have the opportunities that we had as children. Some of the

freedoms and risk taking opportunities that create the foundation blocks of our life as teenagers and

ultimately adults.

Recently I read an article from the National Trust in which they describe a long term decline in

children’s relationship with the outdoors. We all appreciate the importance of the outdoors and the

impact on children’s health and well being and their knowledge of the world. Presently fewer than 10% of

children play in wild places and three times as many children are taken to hospital each year after

falling out of bed, as from falling out of trees. Half of all children have been stopped from climbing

trees and 20% of children are not allowed to play conkers in case they hurt themselves. Many of our

children cannot identify plants or birds in their local woodland or meadow.

At Allithwaite CE School, we hope to provide opportunities which will allow children to explore the world,

take risks and appreciate where they live and the rich resource they have at their feet and their finger

tips. We believe that beyond the life skills these experiences develop, our children’s language and

knowledge of the world will develop. From this will come broader and reflective thinkers, more developed

writers and hopefully more motivated and engaged pupils! I hope that they will enjoy their time in the

outdoors and begin to share their interest in the environment with others.

It is with all of these things in mind, that we are providing adventurous experiences in our curriculum.

These develop leadership, confidence, language and can identify skills that have so far been undiscovered..

We are developing outdoor forest days as a whole school and class activities which should fuel the

imagination and provide rich and meaningful experiences to reflect upon.

This booklet, I hope, will provide you with a small taster of the experiences on offer at Allithwaite CE

School. Together we can perhaps address the decline in our children’s relationship with the outdoors as

we learn and explore together in the very beautiful Cartmel Peninsula and the Lake District.

We believe our school is a very special place and being in the

Lake District, we should ensure our children explore and grow

up exploring the rich opportunities and challenges it offers.

Outdoor learning has so much to offer enriching the lives of

our children.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the

things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw

off the bowlines. sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the

trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

- Mark Twain

“Must we always teach our children with books? Let them look

at the mountains and the stars up above. Let them look at

the beauty of the waters and the trees and flowers on earth.

They will then begin to think, and to think is the beginning of a

real education.”
