In this presentation we will present data on:

• Key findings• How agency networks changed in each locality• Overview of outcomes from the project• Overview of outcomes in each area (panel will discuss

further)

Key findings

• Greater understanding of how agencies further their goals through collaboration and mutual support without compromising their own role

• Ticketing issues a major source of conflict between young people and transit guards

• Armadale survey and data from Gosnells indicated many young people:– Avoided particular stations because they felt unsafe– Said the presence of transit guards made them feel safer

• Informal networks defused problems (concerns could be raised and investigated)

• Connections between organisations enabled practical problems to be solved (stolen identity issue, fines repayment)

• Relationships built between transit guards and young people (Midland PCYC, Corridors College)

• Main issues: Graffiti and trespass, fear of assaults by other patrons, especially intoxicated patrons

• Survey of young people’s perceptions and experiences of train travel, safety and security

• Trial of collaborative project by Drug Arm to provide an on-train service for drug and alcohol affected young people Friday and Saturday nights

• Links with schools through youth services to PTA community education project on rail trespass and track safety

• Main issues: graffiti, station avoidance, rail track crossing, cultural issues, media perception of TGs

• APLOs have become involved in TG cultural awareness training

• New zip card distributed by youth services includes info about rights and responsibilities on trains and local youth services

• Liaison with planners about future developments and ‘design out crime’ initiatives

• Liaison between youth agencies and PTA community education section about track safety

• Main issues: assaults on Transit Guards, importance of consistency and continuity

• Three-way informal linkages between shopping centre security, detached youth work team and Joondalup Transit Guards.

• Liaison between Joondalup Youth Support Services and Transit Guards

• New zip card distributed by youth services includes info about rights and responsibilities on trains and local youth services

• Multiple issues: stolen identity, fines, family violence, conflict between young people and TGs, escalating offences, lack of Indigenous TGs

• TGs have become involved with PCYC and Corridors College building positive relationships with young people

• Practical processes to address stolen identity, personal details, and response to fines

• Brokered three way partnership between PEEDAC, a training agency and WAPTA for Indigenous pre-TG course

• Future issue: safe-house for young people
