HAPPY NEW YEAR & WELCOME HOME TO JESUS THE DIVINE WORD CHURCH!

As we interact responsibly with one another during this pandemic, we at Jesus the Divine Word welcome all who are new to our faith

community, returning to the Catholic Church, searching for a spiritual home or simply visiting with us during this Christmas season.

We are glad you are with us. We understand the difficulties associated with these days and want you to feel welcome and at home

whether you are with us physically or through live-stream. It is a blessing to have you here.

If you are interested in learning more about our parish or registering as a parishioner, we invite you to contact our pastor, Fr. John Dakes at [email protected] or any member of our parish staff at

410-414-8304. We also invite you to view other areas of our website - www.jesusdivineword.org – and to download our registration form, the link of

which is on the front page of the website. We look forward to meeting and getting to know you. Welcome!

    Dear Friends,

You may not have realized it on hearing today’s Gospel, but in this account of

the magi coming to pay homage to Jesus we hear the first words spoken by a person in Matthew. All other words are spoken by an angel. In this passage one of the wise men, arriving in Jerusalem and appearing before Herod, asked, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews. We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage” (2:2). With those words of a Gentile, we have the first indication that this newborn Child is meant for all people; God’s salvation is to unfold in every land and with every person. No one is excluded. His saving power will be known among all the nations (Ps. 67:3). Every nation on earth will adore Him (Ps. 72).

This truth is awe-inspiring. God - unlike those fashioned in His image - desires a relationship with every member of the human race. Jesus was born, suffered, and died for all people, freely offering the gift of salvation. The magi represent this desire of God. What we can say about today’s feast, then, is the same as what we can say about Jesus’ birth at Christmas. It is always happening, must always happen. As Bethlehem is everywhere, so, too, the Epiphany is everywhere. For it to help us it must happen for us, in us and through us. As we accept God’s gift, we must offer that gift to others. The final verse of the hymn “O Little Town of Bethlehem” acknowledges this:

“O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us we pray; Cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today.

We hear the Christmas angels, the great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel.”

As we celebrate Christ’s birth and His Epiphany to all peoples, let us ask God to attune our hearts and minds to the many ways He continues to be revealed to us, in us and through us. As we begin a New Year - one filled with hope and promise as we approach healing from a pandemic that has touched every land - may it find us ever more attentive to God’s word in Scripture, God’s presence in the sacraments, and God’s loving presence in all people.

    Peace and blessings, Fr. John

LIVING THE WORD Week of January 3

Theme: Hey Siri, Where is the Star?

“They were overjoyed at seeing the star.” Matthew 2:10

    Challenge:

I resolve this New Year to follow the only true Star, the Light of the World.

WELCOME HOME - COVID UPDATE With the rise of COVID cases in the state Governor Hogan has changed the guidelines for churches and all religious establishments. Church capacity has been reduced to

50%. Since we have not reached 50% capacity due to our faithful following of CDC, State and local guidelines requiring social distancing of 6 feet between

individuals/households and the use of facecloths/masks for everyone at Mass there are no changes at JDW at this time. We continue to take seriously the physical and

spiritual health of our parishioners and want to be sure that at no time is someone at risk while in our church. Everyone’s participation in following all the guidelines as well as the instruction of the ushers is essential for this to occur. This includes keeping

facemasks on when approaching the minister for Communion. DO NOT lower your masks until having stepped away from the minister. After placing the Eucharist in your mouth, then please put your mask on again. For further

information regarding participation please see the parish website. Until further notice the dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and

Holy Days of Obligation is still in effect. As a reminder, weekday Masses are celebrated Tuesday through Friday at 8:00 AM

with Saturday Morning Mass at 9:00 AM. Sunday Masses are celebrated at 5:00 PM on Saturday and 8:00 and 10:00 AM on Sunday. Doors open 30 minutes before

Mass. Parishioners may choose to sit in the church (as long as there is room) or go directly to Doran Hall. Both the 5 PM and the 10 AM Masses are live streamed. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is celebrated on Wednesday evenings from

7:00 – 8:00 PM and Saturday afternoons from 3:30 – 4:30 PM between the priest vesting sacristy and Fr. John’s office. Confessions are celebrated either face-to-face or

with anonymity, all depending on the desire of the penitent. Appointments are also welcomed.

Parish offices are open, though all depending on the day of the week since some staff are working remotely. Office hours are Monday through Friday 9 AM – 3:00 PM.

The best way to reach staff is still through e-mail. All appointments need to be set up in advance through a phone call or e-mail that proper safety procedures can be

guaranteed. Thank you for your continued cooperation and understanding.

MAKING a SPIRITUAL ACT of COMMUNION 1. If you are not ready to return to the parish for Mass, we invite you to join us for our live streamed Mass at either 5:00 PM on Saturday or 10:00 AM Sunday (rebroadcast at Noon Sunday) or 2. Gather with others in your home and begin your prayer with the Sign of the Cross 3. Take time to read and reflect upon the readings for the Epiphany of the Lord – Isaiah 60:1-6; Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6; and Matthew 2:1-12 4. Share your prayers intentions aloud or offer them quietly in your hearts 5. Pray the Lord's Prayer (Our Father) 6. Offer the following Prayer of Spiritual Communion:

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the

Most Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist.

I love you above all things, and desire to receive you

    into my soul.

Since I am unable to receive you

    sacramentally at this time,

    come spiritually into my heart.

I embrace you as if you were already there and

    unite myself wholly to you.

Never permit me to be separated from you.

Amen. (An Act of Spiritual Communion by St. Alphonsus Liguori)

    7. Close with the Sign of the Cross

CRITICALLY ILL or HOSPITALIZED during the CORONAVIRUS?

Caring for the sick is an important ministry of the Church. In this ministry the Church prays for the sick, visits the

sick, provides the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick and Viaticum (one’s last Communion), if a person is dying.

Though we are living in very unusual times at the present due to the coronavirus, we are still committed to ensuring that no one who is sick will be neglected.

If a person is critically ill or dying we are asking that a family member notify the parish office as soon as possible by calling 410-414-8304 and speaking with

either Fr. John (ext. 11) or Bobbie Woollen (ext. 10).

A reminder, too, that the parish emergency phone number (to be used only when someone is critically ill or dying) is 443-624-2692.

Please call only, do not text (it’s a flip phone). Please note, too, that clergy are required to follow certain directives at the hospital and nursing home at this time

and that those directives could change. Thank you.

LITURGY & PRAYER THE EPIPHANY PROCLAMATION

Below is The Announcement of Easter and the Moveable Feasts. The proclamation originated in a time when most people did not have access to a calendar. It served a very important practical purpose in an age when the date of Easter not only determined religious observances, but also shaped the calendar of

civil life and even the legal system. The Epiphany Proclamation, however, is about more than just dates. During Christmas Time, as we mark the birth of

Christ, we also celebrate the beginning of the Paschal Mystery of Christ’s saving Passion, Death and Resurrection. It is a reminder that we are “involved” in

Christmas. “Know,” it begins, “that, as we have rejoiced at the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, so by leave of God’s mercy we announce to you also the joy of his Resurrection . . .” On Epiphany, the good news of the Savior’s birth gets out

to the nations, represented by the Magi. We, too, hear the Good News in the Proclamation of the continuous unfolding of the Paschal Mystery in our lives

through the liturgy of the Church. And so we make known this Epiphany day:

    The Announcement of Easter

and the Moveable Feasts Know, dear brothers and sisters, that as we have rejoiced at the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, so by leave of God’s mercy we

announce to you also the joy of his Resurrection, who is our Savior. On the 17th day of February will fall Ash Wednesday, and

the beginning of the fast of the most sacred Lenten season. On the 4th day of April you will celebrate with joy Easter Day,

the Paschal feast of our Lord Jesus Christ. On the 16th day of May will be the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ. On the 23rd day of

May, the feast of Pentecost. On the 6th day of June, the feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. On the 28th day of

November, the First Sunday of the Advent of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom is honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

these gifts, we pray, by sending

    In this Christmas season now

drawing to its close, let us not

miss the opportunity to offer a precious gift to our King, who came to us not in worldly

pomp, but in the luminous poverty

of Bethlehem. If we can do this, his light will shine

    upon us.

Ordinary Time the church environment changes, returning to green. We will need help to take down all the beautiful Christmas décor

Jesus the Divine Word Catholic Church January 3, 2021

“Epiphany” means manifestation. And the “Epiphany of the Lord” is Jesus’ manifestation not only to these three

Magi from the East, but it’s also a symbolic but real manifestation of the

Christ to the whole world. These Magi,

traveling from a foreign and non-Jewish nation, reveal that Jesus came

for all people and all are called to adore Him. . .

God used what they were familiar with to call them to adore the Christ. He

used a star. They understood the stars and when they saw this new

and unique star over Bethlehem they realized that something special was happening. So the

first lesson we take from this for our own lives is that God will use what is familiar to us to call us

to Himself. Look for the “star” that God is using to call you. It’s closer than you may think. . .

    Reflect, today, upon

these Magi and see them as a symbol of what you are called to do. You are called from the foreign place of this world to seek out the Messiah.

What is God using to call you to Himself? When

you discover Him, do not hesitate to acknowledge the full truth of who He is, lying prostrate before

Him in complete and humble submission.

    ENVIRONMENTAL MINISTRY/ GREEN TEAM

There will be a virtual meeting of the parish’s

Green Team this Thursday evening, January 7th at 7 PM.

Members will receive an e-mail during the week with a link to the meeting.

    MARCH FOR LIFE 2021

    Friday, January 29th Washington, D.C.

The March for Life is still planned to be held this year on the 29th of January 2021 even though we are in the midst of a

pandemic. Jesus the Good Shepard is getting a 48 passenger

sanitized school bus for the trip. However, due to social distancing they can only accommodate 30 people on the bus. Parishioners of Jesus the Good Shepard have until 17 January 2021 to

sign up for the bus and Jesus the Divine Word Church would be allowed to claim any remaining seats after that date. Since there will be a limited number of seats for the Jesus the Divine Word parishioners it will be on a first come first served

basis this year and all others would need to find their own transportation.

If interested, please contact Kathy Town at [email protected] or call 410-414-3048.

Thank you to our 8th and 9th grade youth who created over 260

“thank you” cards for grocery workers in the County. These

cards were delivered on December 23rd to grocery stores (Giant, Safeway, Bowens, Weis) thanking the grocery workers for working so hard during this last

year with all of the guidelines that were put in place. The cards

certainly created many smiles and much joy.

    SAINT OF THE WEEK

Alfred Bessette was born in Quebec on August 9, 1845, and he was orphaned by the time he was 12. He worked to support himself and had little formal education, but from an early age he had a lively faith and a

strong devotion to St. Joseph. After a few years trying to find work in the United States, he returned to Quebec. There, his childhood pastor

encouraged him to consider a vocation to religious life. He sent Alfred to the Congregation with a note that said, “I am sending you a saint.”

Initially, Holy Cross did not accept him due to poor health. Alfred, however, was not discouraged, with the assistance of the Archbishop of

Montreal, received entrance into the Holy Cross Novitiate on December 27, 1870.

Entering the Novitiate, Alfred took the name André, which was the name of his childhood pastor. Given his frail health and lack of a formal education, Brother André was assigned as doorkeeper of Notre Dame College in Montreal. He continued this assignment as a professed brother. Among his many duties, he greeted visitors

    and tended to their needs.

Many people began to experience physical healings after praying with Brother André, and his reputation as a healer began to spread. So many people flocked to see him that the Congregation allowed him to see sick people at a trolley station across the street. Through it all, Brother André remained humble, often seeming

confused that people would lavish such praise on him. He knew that the real source of these miraculous cures was St. Joseph’s intercession.

His desire to increase devotion to St. Joseph inspired him to found a shrine to his favorite saint across the street from Notre Dame College. He saved the money he earned from giving haircuts at five cents apiece, eventually

earning the $200 he needed to construct a simple structure. This shrine opened on October 19, 1904, and in 1909, Brother André was released from his duties as doorkeeper and assigned full-time as the caretaker of

    the Oratory of St. Joseph.

The Oratory attracted large numbers of pilgrims, and plans were made to construct a large basilica. Brother André’s full-time ministry for the rest of his life was to receive the long lines of sick visitors who flocked to the Oratory to see him. He became known as the “Miracle Man of Montreal,” and thousands of miraculous

healings were attributed to his intercession over the following decades.

Brother André died on January 6, 1937 at the age of 91. During the week that his body lay in state outside of St. Joseph’s Oratory, an estimated one million people braved the bitter Montreal winter to pay their respects.

The basilica was eventually completed and remains a major pilgrimage site, attracting over two million visitors a year. The side chapels are filled with the crutches of people healed through St. André’s prayers.

On October 17, 2010, St. André Bessette became first saint of the Congregation of Holy Cross when he was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI. On this day, the

Church recognized that God chose a very simple man for a remarkable life of service to the Church.

He had previously been beatified by Blessed John Paul II on May 23, 1982.
