reach for excellence

Our plan for 2016 was to reach for excellence. We asked our members to vote daily on the impact of Club programs so we could better meet their needs; this led to a higher level of member engagement and a greater sense that the Club belongs to them. We deepened our impact by offering more SMART programs; these provide life-skills and give kids the tools needed to navigate the daily challenges of growing up. We fed children food prepared from scratch from our central kitchen, using local, fresh produce. For 70 years this commu-nity has supported our organization in its quest to develop youth and help put them on the path to their great future. The accomplishments that follow are possible only with com-munity support; THANK YOU!

youth of the year

Since 1947, Youth of the Year has been Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s premier recognition program, celebrating the extraordinary achievements of Club teens who are willing to share their personal stories of struggle and success with hundreds of strangers. Seven talented youth embarked on this journey in 2016. Youth work with staff and community mentors to identify their passions, start developing goals, and translate them into action— focused on bringing out the best in our youth, encouraging them to be inspired, reach higher and dream big! Not every member will take the challenge of completing this program, but those who do develop a greater sense of self and make great strides in their journey toward being a well-rounded and outstanding citizen.

The addition of Academic Success Coordinators at all of our Clubs in 2016 enhanced after school programming by providing a concrete link between the Club and the member’s school. Coordinators studied school district curriculum, identified student learning gaps, and developed ways to positively reward members for completing homework and working toward goals. High yield, meaningful academic programs challenged students to achieve at their personal level. These programs reinforced skills being taught in their classrooms, challenged youth to problem solve, and encouraged a higher level of thinking in activities that were enjoyable and fun.

good citizenship

Club members are encouraged to be excellent examples to each other and to make wise choices that will positively affect the community around them. Weaving our Club values—which are fun, impactful, collaborative, inspirational, accountable, inclusive and safe—into all our programs, our members learn how to use their powerful voices and strong hands to be the change they believe the community needs. Programs like Youth for Unity, Torch Club, Keystone Club, and all our SMART programs help members to better understand and value that they are a part of a larger community.

athleticPROGRAMS

While playing sports, youth learned to follow rules, be patient, work toward a goal, self assess and receive feedback. Through our Athletic programs, youth learned to compete and have fun, to win, lose, and feel included; they found excitement and received recognition. Athletics is not only about being active and having a healthy lifestyle, it is about being a part of a team which fosters a deeper understanding of commitment, and the value and importance of trusting others around you. Perhaps the most valuable lesson learned in our athletics programs is for kids to keep trying. Athletics programs allowed us to impart these valuable lessons to more than 4,000 youth in 2016.

healthylifestyles

Members make choices everyday that impact their health and well being; we continue to offer ways to make healthy, positive choices. This year, we incorporated more fresh, locally sourced foods in our flavorful and nutritious meals and snacks. Our fitness and SMART programs offered ways to make learning how to be socially, emotionally and physically fit, fun and rewarding, while reinforcing positive outcomes for healthy choices. Whether they were exuding self-confidence or grappling with challenges of being a kid, the Club served as a safe place for kids to be themselves everyday.

It costs $1,500 per member to run programs for one year. Because of your generosity we are able to keep membership at $30 per year. Investing in the mission of this organization allows us to reach those who need us most. In 2016, 67% of our income came from businesses and individual donors who believe there is a need for Clubs in Whatcom County. Thank you for trusting in us to provide programs that help kids reach their own GREAT FUTURE. We couldn’t do it with you!

investing in youth

What is the return on your investment? In 2015 the Institute for Social Research and the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan developed a metric for calculating the ROI when your charitable gift is invested in the lives of young people at the Boys & Girls Clubs. The infographic below illustrates how with every dollar invested, $9.60 in economic benefits are returned to the individual and society.
