Wheelchair-accessible platforms

Lake ArriesjönA break at the lakeJust over 10 kilometres outside Malmö, Lake Arriesjön is a green oasis that is ideal for short walks. Viewing platforms let you admire the view and there are fishing facilities for anglers, picnic areas and trails adapted for prams and wheelchairs.

Get close to the lake

The terrain is varied, with open areas, scrubland and rolling hills where willow, birch and hawthorn grow. Some of the

trails will take you up the hills and others along the streams that run through the area. The lake and its small islands are a haven for more than 100 bird species. Access is prohibited to the islands, but you can view them from two wheel-chair-accessible platforms from where you can observe geese, ducks, terns and gulls. Anglers can fish for perch, pike, roach and rudd in the clear water. One of the fishing platforms is wheelchair-friendly.

Stone and bricks from Arrie have been used to build many of Malmö’s buildings. The quarry

and limestone factory here reached its apex in the early 1900s, at a time of rapid industrialisation.

People sometimes swim near the southern car park, but there is no beach as such and the lake shelves abruptly. Bathing here is at your own risk. For safety, there is a lifebuoy.

The road to the wheel-chair-accessible trail is steep but cars are allowed to drive if carrying a wheelchair. See page 58 for further details.

This is the perfect place if you want an active day in the woods. The northern

part of the forest, near Bocka- torpet, is popular with joggers and mountain bike riders. Bocka-torpet is also a favoured spot for school and other group outings. Here there are open grass areas where you can play rounders, along with picnic areas and a windshelter complete with roof. The trails are lit at night and you can use them all year round, including for skiing

Breanäs is a mix of old-growth coniferous forest and more open mixed wood-

land. The pine forest, interspersed with mires and pasture, is tranquil

and perfect for a quiet walk. The Skåneleden Trail passes through en route to the adjacent Kullaskogen, where you can hike and ramble for hours. The lake, home to a rich birdlife in- cluding ospreys and black-throated divers, was once an impor-tant transport route, with Breanäs as one of its hubs. The

With its many inlets and bays, Lake Immeln is perfect for canoe-ists and the campsite and wind-shelter at Breanäs caters for them and other visitors. You can hire canoes at Immeln Canoe Centre. If you buy a permit you can also fish for perch, bream, pike, pike, roach, whitefish and trout.

Djurholmamossen, a large mire fringed by beechwoods and coniferous forest, lies

at the centre of Djurholmen. The area is rich in clearance cairns, ruins, cultivation plots and other relics left from bygone times. A red-marked trail leads to the ravine, formed at the end of the last Ice Age 14,000 years ago. The mire and Århultsbäcken stream are European Natura 2000 areas. In July and August the mire is a blaze of pink bell-heather and hosts resident bird species like black grouse and capercaillie. At Finstorp you will experi-ence varied scenery with beech-clad hillsides,

spruce plantations and two ponds created on former marshland. There are several trails and after your walk you can enjoy a picnic beside the lake.

The northern tip of the green trail passes the remains of an old farmstead razed by fire in the 1920s. A new farmhouse was later built near the ponds. Fishing in the Fiskedammen pond is open to all but strictly prohibited in the Fågel-dammen pond to avoid distur-bance to birdlife. With a little luck you can see grey herons here.

Friseboda is a nature reserve of gnarled coastal pines and sandy soil that is home to

lichens, moss and brambles. The sand dunes in the northern

section of the reserve are shaped by the wind and constantly chang-ing. To the south, the heathland holds wild thyme, dog violet and dwarf everlast.

Archaeological remains show that human habitation here dates back to the Stone Age. The eel fishing huts by the beach have stood for hundreds of years. In the 17th century, Friseboda’s oak forest was felled to provide timber for Sweden’s naval fleet and for fuel.

This led to serious erosion that was only halted when landowners planted protective pine forests in the 1800s.

Friseboda hosts many birds on their spring migration, including cranes, grey plover, divers, grebes and eider. The first spring migrant to arrive is the Sandwich tern, fresh from its winter quarters in West Africa. Woodlark, willow warbler and common treecreeper breed in the woods.

There are various pathways and tractor paths along the coast but no marked trails. The observation platforms in the north and south of the area are wheelchair-accessible.

Following one of Frostaval-len’s trails will take you past shimmering lakes and open

countryside, as well as rocky out-crops and precipices. At Lake Dag-storpssjön you can find basalt slopes that are volcanic remains from the Jurassic Period, while the bucolic pastures at Dagstorp Nature Reserve have held livestock for hundreds of years.

Hidden among the greenery are small clearance cairns, some from the Iron Age, and more recent ruins of crofters’ homes and farmsteads. A decline in the rural population in the past century has led to the encroachment of scrub and forest. There are trails of different lengths and picnic areas with tables and benches, some with barbecue facilities and wheelchair access.

Fulltofta combines dense woodlands with forest glades, pastures, ponds and

streams. It is one of Sweden’s largest sites for Bronze Age agri-culture. Many of the oaks on the banks of Lake Ringsjön are several hundred years old.

There are almost a dozen trails of different lengths, three of which are wheelchair- and pram-acces-sible and certified by Tourism for All. One of the longer trails is spe-cially designed for prams. You can also try a treetop walk through the canopy, eight metres above the ground.

The 3.6-kilometre nature trail will show you how the culture and landscape has changed in the last 250 years and what can be done to support biodiversity. The Skåne- leden Trail passes through Fulltofta.

A short distance away from the visitor centre is an obstacle course for children of different ages. READ MORE EN.SKANSKALANDSKAP.SE/JARAVALLEN

Most of Järavallen is a nature reserve and a bird-watchers’ paradise. Many

wading birds rest on the coastal meadows during migration and in mild winters some spend the sea-son here alongside flocks of ducks and geese. Oystercatchers and lapwings breed on the meadows and you can see them and other birds, including common buzzard, peregrine falcon and white-tailed eagle, from the observation tower on the beach.

Järavallen, in Lundåkrabukten Bay, is a shallow shore with banks of seaweed that are exposed at low tide. The banks date back hundreds of years, when they were built to form enclosures. The high salt content in the water compared to the brackish Baltic Sea farther south provides good habitat for salt-tolerant plant species like blackgrass, red fescue and seaside centaury. Common bent, wavy hairgrass and sand sedge grow in the grassy meadows. In the nearby pinewoods you can find guelder-rose, elder, woodbine and moss.

The flora and fauna changes dramatically at the bog Hofterups Mosse. The parts of this small wetland that are inside the recrea-tion area are largely overgrown with birch and osiers. Here you can

The Sjöstigen trail leads through damp deciduous woodland with patches of

open water. Some of the more exotic tree species, planted by former owners of Lilla Mölleröd Farm, have signs to help you identify them.

The scenery varies from beech-woods in the north to spruce plan-tations in the south. Cattle graze along a former walled cattle path and black woodpecker and goos- ander breed in the woods and lake respectively.

Lilla Mölleröd Farm dates back several hundred years and served as a garrison for corporals and sergeants of the Skåne cavalry in the 17th century.

To find out more about the local history you can take the 1-kilometre heritage trail "Kulturstigen" and see clearance cairns, an ancient cattle path and the remains of crofters’ cottages, including one named Danska Hemmanet (“Dan-ish Homestead”). There is also a well-preserved five-stone marker that marked a parish or property boundary.

What’s that?

SkrylleNature close to townSkrylle attracts thousands of joggers, walkers and nature lovers every year – the perfect place for some exercise or a gentle Sunday walk.

READ MORE EN.SKANSKALANDSKAP.SE/SKRYLLE

Skrylle is an area of varied countryside where in spring you can admire the wild-

flowers at Dalby Söderskog National Park or go for a stroll among the ponds, pastures and flooded former quarry. The woods are largely plantations, but some remnants of ancient deciduous forest remain and broadleaf species are gaining ground at the expense of spruce.

The straight walls and forest tracks are also the result of the plantations created in the late 1800s. Two eskers – Knivsåsen and Borelundsåsen – are located in the northwest.

If you would like to know more about the local flora and fauna, history and geology, you should visit Naturum Skrylle, a visitor centre run by Lund Municipality.

A network of trails and jogging tracks criss-crosses the area.

Three trails are lit and there is also a wheelchair-friendly trail. The Skåneleden Trail passes through the area and the 15-kilometre Skryllerundan trail starts at Skryllegården.

At Rögle Dammar ponds you can fish with flies, spinners and floats if you have permit. One of the fishing jetties is wheelchair- accessible.

Skryllegården has a restaurant and café and there are a number of picnic areas in the area that can be booked at reception. You can also purchase firewood and book a windshelter if you want to spend the night under the stars.

Lake ahoy!

Try your luck

Snogeholm is a varied land-scape of sandy heaths, open pasture, deciduous woods

and spruce forest. There are numerous old-growth trees and many birds of prey frequent the area. Parts of Snogeholm are included in the EU Natura 2000 programme of valuable habitats.

Snogeholm is a former estate that in the 19th century had its own village, complete with labour-ers’ cottages, iron foundry and brickworks. The estate also had its own flour mill, sawmill, dairy and coal-fired ovens.

Of the numerous trails, Snoge- holmsrundan is the longest at 16 kilometres. A short waterside

walk at Lake Snogeholmssjön is accessible to wheelchairs and prams. The Skåneleden Trail passes through the area.

You can rent canoes and rowing boats at Fiskarhus by Lake Snoge- holmssjön. There are two horse- riding trails and you can rent a paddock.

At Kejsardammen pond you can fish for rainbow trout with flies or lures. If you prefer to try for pike, perch and pike-perch, choose Lake Snogeholmssjön, where you can also ice-fish during winter. Please remember to buy a fishing permit. The pond and the lake both have wheelchair-accessible jetties.

TjörnedalaFusion of nature and artNature meets art at Tjörnedala. The exhibitions at Tjörnedalagården attract many visitors, espe-cially during the Easter art week. You can explore the area on numerous tracks and trails and swim and fish in the sea.

READ MORE EN.SKANSKALANDSKAP.SE/TJORNEDALA

The scenery at Tjörnedala is a mix of pine and deciduous woodland, apple orchards,

pasture and coastal meadows. The area takes its name from the buck-thorn, known as tjörne in the Skåne dialect, that grows by the beach.

From the top of the ridge the sea view is inspiring and you can look down onto the meadows below, where pasqueflower, cow-slip and orchids grow. Livestock graze the meadows, helping to preserve the flora.

When the legendary Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus visited Tjörnedala in the summer of 1749 he described it as “one of the most gorgeous groves I have seen in our nation”. The eel fishermen’s huts by the sea testify to the historical

Tjörnedalagården is more than 200 years hold and well known for its art exhibitions. Sculptures and works of art are dotted around the grounds. You can enjoy coffee and pastries in the café or bring a pic-nic and sit by the sea.

Time for a break

A wide range of tree species has been planted here, and among them you can

find the likes of Douglas fir, red oak and silver fir. Another exotic species is a fast-growing hybrid of European and Japanese larch. Planted in the 1970s, this larch has needles that turn yel-low in autumn and fall off, like the leaves of a deciduous tree.

An 800-metre trail pro-vides information about the trees and their management. Abandoned fields, clearance cairns and old stone walls testify to a long tradition of small-scale agriculture.

There are three walking trails, the longest of which is 2.7 kilo-metres. During autumn you can pick mushrooms in the woods. There is a picnic area by the car park.

Summertime bliss

Vitemölla’s white sandy beach attracts many visi-tors in the summer. But

be ready for a bracing dip: the Baltic Sea is colder in summer than the west coast. St Bernard’s lily and Koeleria pyramidata grow in the sandy soil, where many butterfly and insect species also thrive. The woods range from pine plantations to lush broadleaf woodland. People have fished here since the Stone Age, and the Örakaren salmon fishing conces-sion along the River Verkeån dates back to the 17th century at least. The fish here were caught in traps. Today there are eight small weirs

with demonstration traps for trout.Eel fishing is a tradition here

and this stretch of coast is known locally as the Eel Coast. The ham-let of Vitemölla was known for its fishing and the old timbered house at Lindgrens Länga is a museum where you can learn more about the local history. At Stenörens Ålabod you can visit a fisherman’s hut and see old eel and sea trout tackle.

There are no signposted trails at Vitemölla, but unmarked tracks run along the coast and through the woods. The Skåneleden Trail passes through the area but is unmarked at Vitemölla.

FishingThe coast here is known for its sea trout fishing, especially in late winter. Fishing is prohibited from 15 September to 31 December and until 30 April at the mouths of the Mölleån, Klammersbäck and Verke- ån rivers.

Nature dos and don’ts About the right of public access

Many people like to spend time in the countryside. Our recreational areas attract hikers, anglers, dog owners, families, school groups, horse riders, cyclists and many others. It is important to be respectful and show consideration to others.

Remember:✓ Be respectful✓ Do not disturb✓ Do not cause

damage ✓ Take your

litter with you

T he Swedish right of public access gives everyone free access to the countryside so

long as you do not cause damage or disturbance and follow some basic rules.

Show respect for nature, animals and other people.

You may camp for a maximum of 24 hours without the landowner’s permission.

You may make a fire but not if there is a risk of it spreading or damaging the environment. Have water with you and use only loose branches and twigs for firewood.

Keep your dog on a lead. Loose dogs can scare people and animals.

Take any litter home with you and leave the area clean and tidy.

Cycle and ride on marked trails to avoid damaging paths for wheelchairs and other users.

The right of public access is more restricted in nature reserves and special rules apply. Some of our areas are nature reserves and have signposts explaining the rules.

The Scanian Landscape Foun-dation is funded primarily by an annual grant from Region Skåne. Our mission is to maintain and improve recreational areas in Skåne, to manage and develop Fulltofta Nature and Visitor Centre, to run outdoor education programmes, to carry out nature conservancy work and to co-manage parts of the Skåneleden Trail.

The Scanian Landscape Foun-dation manages 19 recreational areas across Skåne. The majority are owned by foundations linked to Skåne Regional Council (Stiftelsen för Fritidsområden i Skåne, Stiftelserna O D Krooks Donationer and Stiftelsen Jur Dr H Cavallis Donationsfond).

At two of our locations – Lake Arriesjön and Bockeboda – we have built visitor facilities, thanks primarily to funding from the European Union and the County Administrative Board of Skåne.
