Creating a Society-wide project with the dual purposes of concretizing the AΣN mission and increasing campus awareness of Alpha Sigma Nu was the challenge delivered to leaders at the 2009 Triennial Conference. Given this opportunity to be visionary, Chapter presidents and Faculty Advisers developed action plans based on the concept of a week devoted to these purposes. Collaboratively, they created and executed Alpha Sigma Nu Week. The presidents particularly embraced the idea. They brainstormed with the Advisers and Alumni Club presidents about possible programs. They sought the guidance and cooperation of universi- ty presidents, mission officers, and faculty and looked to their campus communities and the larger communities for appropriate projects. New programs sometimes take time to get off the ground, but not this one. Seventeen Chapters held AΣN Week events this spring, not only meeting the challenge of the Conference but establishing new and vibrant traditions. Here are some highlights: Canisius College Ignatian Scholarship Day at Canisius featured research and scholarship. AΣN members prepared gardens for community planting and performed general park maintenance at the Peoples’ Park Gardens. The Chapter retreat included reflections on life after a year of service from Rachel Morlock (Canisius ’07), Jesuit Volunteer Corps NW and diocese service corps; Cathy Coughlin (Canisius ’07), Mercy Corps; and Philip Reed, Jesuit Volunteer Corps. College of the Holy Cross AΣN Week was launched with Mass recognizing members of Alpha Sigma Nu for their scholarship and contributions to campus. As part of the Haiti Relief Coalition established through their Student Government Association, the Chapter celebrated both AΣN Week and St. Patrick’s Day with “Shamrocks for Haiti,” successfully raising funds for earthquake victims. Advertised with posters around campus, AΣN Week ended with the deadline for qualified juniors to apply for admittance to the society. Fordham University Alpha Sigma Nu Week celebrated each pillar of AΣN. Michael Tueth, SJ (St. Louis ’71), professor at Fordham and regular contributor to America Magazine, spoke to the Chapter about the meaning of service. Members attended Sunday night Mass at the Fordham University Church together, wearing their new AΣN t-shirts with pride. They used this occasion to inform those in attendance about AΣN to encourage others to strive for membership. Cait Hynes (Fordham ’09), served as cantor for the Mass. The Chapter’s Blood Drive capped off the week. Gonzaga University A salsa party opened the Week, and while making delicious food was its main purpose, conversations on social justice followed. Michael Woods, SJ (Gonzaga, ’08), Gonzaga Faculty Adviser, spoke about local farmers who produce food ethically, noting that “eating can be a form of justice.” A prayer service that included the Examen of Conscience, led by Fr. Woods, was held in the Jesuit House chapel. The Flannery Lecture featured Luke Timothy Johnson, PhD, the R. W. Woodruff Professor of New Testament and Christianity at Emory University, who spoke on the decline in participation in Christian and Islamic faiths. The Chapter board created AΣN logo cards for students to write a letter of gratitude to faculty and staff members and delivered the letters every day of AΣN Week. Several professors remarked to President John Wenstrand (Gonzaga ’09) that they greatly enjoyed getting these notes. John Carroll University As a celebration of Alpha Sigma Nu Week, sociologist and recently inducted honorary member, Ernest DeZolt, PhD (John Carroll ’09), spoke to members about the importance of scholarship, service and loyalty in his life and career. Dr. DeZolt led a conversation on “Who am I and what do I want to do?” through the respective lenses of scholarship, loyalty and service. The chapter’s vice president, Joseph Merry (John Carroll ’09), spoke about Alpha Sigma Nu Week as an important communal celebration of the society. William Bichl, SJ (John Carroll ’98), Faculty Adviser, provided a final reflection. Loyola University Chicago Since scholarship is the first tenet of Alpha Sigma Nu, the Chapter opened AΣN Week with the presentation of the Alpha Sigma Nu Book Award to Kathleen Adams, PhD, Professor of Anthropology. Faculty Adviser Mark Bosco, SJ (Loyola Chicago ’04), presented the award. Dr. Adams addressed the Chapter, giving insight into her book and her work. Mary Jo Bohr (Loyola Chicago ’73), former AΣN Board Secretary and Loyola Regent, spoke to the Chapter about her own personal commitment to AΣN ideals, particularly focusing on loyalty. To educate prospective new members on Alpha Sigma Nu, the Chapter held AΣN information sessions. In collaboration with other student organizations, the Chapter held five blood/marrow registration drives over the year, registering over 350 individuals to donate blood, and signing up160 individuals for the bone marrow registry. Loyola University Maryland Collaborating with the Office of Mission Integration, the Chapter presented “Mastering the Art of Jesuit Higher Education” with John O’Malley, SJ (Weston ’95). Fr. O’Malley, a professor at Georgetown, is widely known as America’s foremost expert on Jesuit history. In attendance were University President and former AΣN Board member Brian Linnane, SJ (Holy Cross ’95), Maryland Provincial James Shea, SJ, and student and alumni members of Alpha Sigma Nu. The Chapter co-sponsored “Women’s Meet & Eat” with the Center for Community Service & Justice. This dinner brought those who are assisted by university outreach programs and those students who volunteer for those programs to campus. The Loyola Maryland induction capped off AΣN Week as the Chapter welcomed new members and presented the Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award to Gerard Athaide, PhD (Loyola Maryland ’04). Loyola Marymount University Along with the Los Angeles Alpha Sigma Nu Alumni Club, the Chapter celebrated AΣN Week by presenting “Networking in an Ignatian State of Mind.” Led by AΣN Board Vice-president and Alumni Club President Patrick Cain (Loyola Marymount ’78) and Chapter President Tyler Galbraith (Loyola Marymount ’09), this event gathered alumni and students. After a social, the featured panel of alumni discussed how the core values of Alpha Sigma Nu have influenced them in their respective professions. Robert Baker (Loyola Maryland ’56), a retired foreign service officer; David Moreno (Santa Clara ’66), a human resources director; Cindy Morgan (Loyola Marymount ’99), an attorney with Paul Hastings, and Maddy Goodreau (Loyola Marymount ’05), Development Associate at the St. Joseph’s Center, generously shared their thoughts with attendees. Marquette University Because many AΣN members are interested in service this year, the Chapter organized a panel showcasing the Peace Corps, Teach for America, Americorps, and the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. The panel members described their organizations and told their personal stories, provoking candid conversation. The Chapter opened this event to all students. Later in AΣN Week, the Jesuit Community welcomed Chapter members to the Jesuit residence for dinner where the hosts made pizzas for the 85 people in attendance. This informal event gave the Jesuits and AΣN members and alumni an opportunity to gather. Regis University Sporting their new t-shirts with “Educated by Jesuits,” the IHS symbol, and “Alpha Sigma Nu,” the Regis Chapter raised campus awareness of AΣN. On March 22nd, Chapter members enjoyed “Pizza with the Jesuits” and discussed scholarship, loyalty, and service. Later in the Week, the Denver AΣN Alumni Club treated student members to a reception and conversation We Jesuit university graduates observe with special interest the intersection of today’s world issues and the work that the Society of Jesus does to respond to the resulting human need. The past few years have provided too many examples of that need: the tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, the earthquake in Port-au-Prince, and domestic issues of poverty, education, and social justice. Often, when I read all that the Jesuits are doing across the world, I marvel at their commitment and wonder if there isn’t some small way to participate. You have seen a recent shift in emphasis and energy coming from the Board, Faculty Advisers, and student leaders of Alpha Sigma Nu. Alpha Sigma Nu is an honor society recognizing academic excellence and meaningful service to others. What makes AΣN truly Jesuit is the tenet of loyalty, and often members find this term truly difficult to define. In April, I attended the Seattle University induction. As the keynote speaker, President Stephen Sundborg, SJ, characterized loyalty in this way: as members of the honor society bearing the name Jesuit, our actions as a Society, a Chapter, a Club and a member are informed by “the service of faith,” and “the promotion of justice.” As Father General Hans Peter Kolvenbach explained: So central to the mission of the entire Society was this union of faith and justice that it was to become the "integrating factor" of all the Society's works, and in this light "great attention" was to be paid in evaluating every work, including educational institutions. So let us look at loyalty as both a measure at induction and a measure in all that we do in the years that follow. We, as AΣN members, are stewards of magis, a life-long call, to the service of others, to intellectual rigor, and to the service of faith, and the promotion of justice. We, as the AΣN Board, promise that this integrating factor will be our guide. The Triennial Conference, made possible through your generous support, provided the requisite venue for vision and planning. As a result, Alpha Sigma Nu Chapters held the first annual Alpha Sigma Nu Week, universal in focus and unique in execution. Many Alumni Clubs collaborated on these programs. AΣN is in a unique position to act as a conduit for connecting members to Jesuit mission and works as: • Student Chapters becomes more mission focused and include outreach to alumni • Alumni Clubs design programs to educate members in trends in Jesuit education and in local Jesuit projects •AΣN’s social media venues (the AΣN web site, Facebook and LinkedIn) provide networking opportunities for members and provide links to Jesuit resources and other sites of interest to members I look forward to an increasingly engaged membership, and hope that you will contact me with your comments and suggestions. I feel exceptionally blessed to be leading AΣN at this moment in time as previous leadership has discerned a path for Alpha Sigma Nu, and current leadership eagerly takes up the mantle and mission. ΑΣΝ SUMMER 2010 1

WHEELING JESUIT BREAD RUN - STILL GOING STRONGThe Summer 2005 edition of the AΣN Newsletter told the story of Wheeling Jesuit University’s “Bread Run.” Faculty Adviser Michael Steltenkamp, SJ (Wheeling ’95), approached Richard Riesbeck(Wheeling ’03), CEO of Riesbeck Foods, to ask if students could deliver leftover bakery items to Catholic Charities in downtown Wheeling. AΣN members and their WJU collaborators now provideCatholic Charities with hundreds of pounds of frozen food per week that ranges from pork chops to beef to chicken, and other goods that go to the needy every day. Sometimes the bread becomes staleand cannot be used. Not a problem! It is given to a local farmer as feed for his chickens, and the farmer, in turn, provides Catholic Charities with eggs. Riesbeck reports that his grocery chain has nowcome to supply 69 charities with 130,000 pounds of food a month. Perhaps none of this would have come about if two members of AΣN had not reached out on behalf of God’s people.

on living the values as alumni. The final celebration of AΣN Week at Regis saw the Chaptertake part in that uniquely Regis annual tradition, filling Easter baskets with treats and personalitems such as toothbrushes and combs for St. Ignatius Loyola Parish and School and Escuelade Guadalupe.

Saint Joseph’s University

To celebrate AΣN Week, the Chapter partnered with West Philadelphia Catholic High School.WPC sophomores and juniors were given personalized campus tours by the AΣN members.Myra Singletary, Director of Multicultural Admissions, addressed the students on life at SJUand the application process. A WPC alumnus who is a current SJU student spoke on histransition to college and SJU in particular. Then, WPC and SJU “buddies” discussed life atSJU over lunch. The Chapter hopes to make this activity, which touched on all three pillars ofAΣN, an annual event at SJU.

Saint Louis UniversityChapter members and local alumni gathered at Saint Louis University’s Museum ofContemporary Religious Art (MOCRA) to see the special exhibit featuring representations ofthe Passion of Christ from a variety of artists, styles, and time periods, especially appropriatefor Lent. Terrence Dempsey, SJ, gallery manager, gave a brief talk followed by refreshments inthe gallery. Chapter officers celebrated scholarship by attaching the message, Scholarship-Loyalty-Service, Alpha Sigma Nu: The Jesuit Honor Society, A sweet reward for yourdedication to scholarship! to a piece of candy. The officers went to the library during primetime, 8:45-9:45 pm, and quietly distributed the treats and informational brochures about theChapter, inspiring scholars and producing 400 smiles in a single hour!

Saint Peter’s CollegeThe St. Peter’s Chapter took AΣN Week to the whole campus by organizing “Jesuit HeritageWeek” in collaboration with Vice President of Mission and Ministry and Faculty Adviser,Michael Braden, SJ (St. Peter’s ’10). The Week kicked off with a scavenger hunt as AΣNmembers created a search for objects that point to our Jesuit Heritage. Dr. James T. Fishergave a presentation on Jesuit history in Jersey City and the influence the SPC Jesuit

community had on the dock workers labor movement. A unique offering during the Week wasa one act play, The Witness, directed by Chapter vice-president Peaches Dela Paz (St.Peter’s ’09). The play, written by Ernest Ferlita, SJ (Spring Hill ’50), is about interviews with awitness to the murder of six Jesuits in El Salvador. After the play Michael Fazio (St. Peter’s’10), Vice President for Advancement, shared his recent experience on an immersion trip to ElSalvador as a member of the Ignatian Colleagues. The Chapter retreat for the members ofAlpha Sigma Nu was a simple two hours of prayer and reflection led by Father Braden. At thePalm Sunday Mass, AΣN members served as readers, cantor, gift bearers and Eucharisticminister and gathered at a social after Mass. Finally, Rev. Michel Marcil, SJ, the director of theU.S. Catholic China Bureau spoke on Chinese religious policy today. Following the Marcillecture there was a reception for the entire university community.

University of Detroit MercyAΣN Week was the occasion for the first annual Food for Thought, a faculty/staff/studentforum, held at the Jesuit Residence. John Staudenmaier, SJ (U. of Detroit Mercy ’87),Assistant to the Presidentfor Mission and Identityand former AΣN FacultyAdviser, was the facilitator;his presentation and theresulting discussion wasfocused on building astronger UDM community, promoting the AΣN values, and creating an awarenessof Alpha Sigma Nu oncampus. Chaptermembers gave studentsthe opportunity to writethank you notes to facultyand staff. Over two hundred cards were delivered; members plan to make this an annualevent. Throughout AΣN Week, members could be spotted on campus by their AΣN shirts.

University of San FranciscoUSF Chapter members are the authors of the AΣN Faculty-Staff Appreciation Day. During“Dead Hour,” where students mingle out in the plaza during lunch time, members set up tablesthat had thank you cards to sign for their faculty and staff. This project served many purposesas AΣN members gave back to the faculty and staff to show their appreciation for all that theydo, and the Chapter educated faculty, staff and students about the Society. The Chaptermarked AΣN Week by hosting the Graduate School Panel, consisting of a professor whoadvises undergraduate students through the application process, a student recently successfulin applying to law school, and an alumna currently back at USF for her doctorate. The Alpha Sigma Nu Board of Directors and Faculty Advisers are calling the Jesuit Honor Society toa deeper commitment to the mission of Jesuit education. The Chapters are responding bycollaborating with mission officers on campus and designing programs that promote the mission ofboth AΣN and their universities. AΣN’s Alumni Clubs are commissioned to promote the formationof members as lifelong Ignatian-inspired learners and leaders. This movement has been inspired bythe decrees of the General Congregations 34 and 35, “Cooperation with the Laity in Mission” and“Collaboration at the Heart of Mission” respectively, that both affirmed and encouraged apostoliccollaboration and the increasingly important role of the laity in Jesuit mission.

Jesuit higher education is nothing if not dynamic. Keeping Alpha Sigma Nu members informed isincreasingly important in light of the new vision for action. There are three pertinent articles recentlyrecommended to the delegates to the Heartland Delta Conference prior to their gathering in May fordialogue and learning about Jesuit education, collaboration, and Ignatian spirituality. They areespecially helpful for understanding the context of the Alpha Sigma Nu vision.

Paul Locatelli, SJ (Santa Clara ’89), wrote on “The Catholic University of the 21st Century:Educating for Solidarity,” articulating what Father General Kolvenbach’s standard “well-educatedsolidarity” means for Jesuit education today. He asked two significant questions: How can we, asuniversities, legitimately integrate solidarity into our academic and educational mission? What doeswell-educated solidarity and academic excellence do for our students in today’s world?

In his article, “The Influence of the Spiritual Exercises on Six Dimensions of Jesuit Education”,Michael Graham, SJ (Xavier ’96), discusses how the Spiritual Exercises inform Jesuit education; byreading the Exercises as an educational not retreatant document, one comes to six dimensions ofJesuit education.

At the international conference, “Networking Jesuit Higher Education: Shaping the Future for aHumane, Just, Sustainable Globe” held April 23, 2010 in Mexico City, Father General AdolfoNicolas, SJ, presented “Depth, Universality, and Learned Ministry: Challenges to Jesuit HigherEducation Today” to delegates from Jesuit universities around the world. He posed this question:how does the explosion of worldwide interdependence, known as globalization, re-direct the missionof Jesuit higher education?

• Promoting Depth of Thought and Imagination - despite to quick access to information, sometimesuperficial relationship of “friends,” and the “dizzying pluralism of choices and values and beliefsand visions of life”

• Re-discovering Universality - As a single humanity facing common challenges, as GC 35 stated,we “bear a common responsibility for the welfare of the entire world and its development in asustainable and life-giving way”

• Learned Ministry - Ignatian heritage commands that research in Jesuit universities requireslearning and intelligence, imagination and ingenuity, solid studies and rigorous analysis, and thatit is aimed at making a difference in people’s lives. Globalization, he finds, has created newinequalities between those who enjoy the power given to them by knowledge and those who areexcluded because they have no access to that knowledge. He calls for faculty and students tobecome voices for the voiceless, sources of human rights for those denied such rights, resourcesfor protection of the environment, and persons of solidarity for the poor.

Father General’s address, as well as Father Locatelli’s and Father Graham’s can be found on theAlumni Resources and Links page at www.alphasigmanu.org.

Creating a Society-wide project with the dual purposes of concretizing the AΣN mission and increasing campus awareness of Alpha Sigma Nu was the challenge delivered to leaders at the 2009Triennial Conference. Given this opportunity to be visionary, Chapter presidents and Faculty Advisers developed action plans based on the concept of a week devoted to these purposes.Collaboratively, they created and executed Alpha Sigma Nu Week.

The presidents particularly embraced the idea. They brainstormed with the Advisers and Alumni Club presidents about possible programs. They sought the guidance and cooperation of universi-ty presidents, mission officers, and faculty and looked to their campus communities and the larger communities for appropriate projects. New programs sometimes take time to get off the ground, but not this one. Seventeen Chapters held AΣN Week events this spring, not only meeting the challenge of the Conference but establishing new and vibrant traditions. Here are some highlights:

Canisius CollegeIgnatian Scholarship Day at Canisius featuredresearch and scholarship. AΣN membersprepared gardens for community planting andperformed general park maintenance at thePeoples’ Park Gardens. The Chapter retreatincluded reflections on life after a year ofservice from Rachel Morlock (Canisius ’07),Jesuit Volunteer Corps NW and dioceseservice corps; Cathy Coughlin (Canisius’07), Mercy Corps; and Philip Reed, JesuitVolunteer Corps.

College of the Holy CrossAΣN Week was launched with Mass recognizing members of Alpha Sigma Nu for theirscholarship and contributions to campus. As part of the Haiti Relief Coalition establishedthrough their Student Government Association, the Chapter celebrated both AΣN Week andSt. Patrick’s Day with “Shamrocks for Haiti,” successfully raising funds for earthquake victims.Advertised with posters around campus, AΣN Week ended with the deadline for qualifiedjuniors to apply for admittance to the society.

Fordham UniversityAlpha Sigma Nu Week celebrated eachpillar of AΣN. Michael Tueth, SJ (St.Louis ’71), professor at Fordham andregular contributor to America Magazine, spoke to the Chapter about the meaningof service. Members attended Sundaynight Mass at the Fordham UniversityChurch together, wearing their new AΣNt-shirts with pride. They used thisoccasion to inform those in attendanceabout AΣN to encourage others to strivefor membership. Cait Hynes (Fordham’09), served as cantor for the Mass. The Chapter’s Blood Drive capped offthe week.

Gonzaga UniversityA salsa party opened the Week, and while making delicious food was its main purpose, conversations on social justice followed. Michael Woods, SJ (Gonzaga, ’08), Gonzaga FacultyAdviser, spoke about local farmers who produce food ethically, noting that “eating can be aform of justice.” A prayer service that included the Examen of Conscience, led by Fr. Woods, was held in the Jesuit House chapel. The Flannery Lecture featured Luke Timothy Johnson,PhD, the R. W. Woodruff Professor of New Testament and Christianity at Emory University, who spoke on the decline in participation in Christian and Islamic faiths. The Chapter boardcreated AΣN logo cards for students to write a letter of gratitude to faculty and staff membersand delivered the letters every day of AΣN Week. Several professors remarked to PresidentJohn Wenstrand (Gonzaga ’09) that they greatly enjoyed getting these notes.

John Carroll UniversityAs a celebration of Alpha Sigma Nu Week, sociologist and recently inducted honorarymember, Ernest DeZolt, PhD (John Carroll’09), spoke to members about theimportance of scholarship, service andloyalty in his life and career. Dr. DeZolt leda conversation on “Who am I and what doI want to do?” through the respectivelenses of scholarship, loyalty and service. The chapter’s vice president, Joseph Merry(John Carroll ’09), spoke about Alpha SigmaNu Week as an important communalcelebration of the society. William Bichl, SJ(John Carroll ’98), Faculty Adviser, provideda final reflection.

Loyola University ChicagoSince scholarship is the first tenet of Alpha Sigma Nu, the Chapter opened AΣN Week with

the presentation of the Alpha Sigma NuBook Award to Kathleen Adams, PhD,Professor of Anthropology. Faculty AdviserMark Bosco, SJ (Loyola Chicago ’04),presented the award. Dr. Adamsaddressed the Chapter, giving insight intoher book and her work. Mary Jo Bohr(Loyola Chicago ’73), former AΣN BoardSecretary and Loyola Regent, spoke tothe Chapter about her own personalcommitment to AΣN ideals, particularlyfocusing on loyalty. To educateprospective new members on AlphaSigma Nu, the Chapter held AΣNinformation sessions. In collaboration with

other student organizations, the Chapter held five blood/marrow registration drives over theyear, registering over 350 individuals to donate blood, and signing up160 individuals for thebone marrow registry.

Loyola University MarylandCollaborating with the Office of Mission Integration, the Chapter presented “Mastering the Artof Jesuit Higher Education” with John O’Malley, SJ (Weston ’95). Fr. O’Malley, a professor atGeorgetown, is widely known as America’s foremost expert on Jesuit history. In attendancewere University President and former AΣN Board member Brian Linnane, SJ (Holy Cross ’95),Maryland Provincial James Shea, SJ, and student and alumni members of Alpha Sigma Nu.The Chapter co-sponsored “Women’s Meet & Eat” with the Center for Community Service &

Justice. This dinner brought those who are assisted by university outreach programs andthose students who volunteer for those programs to campus. The Loyola Maryland inductioncapped off AΣN Week as the Chapter welcomed new members and presented theDistinguished Teacher of the Year Award to Gerard Athaide, PhD (Loyola Maryland ’04).

Loyola Marymount UniversityAlong with the Los Angeles Alpha Sigma NuAlumni Club, the Chapter celebrated AΣN Weekby presenting “Networking in an Ignatian State ofMind.” Led by AΣN Board Vice-president andAlumni Club President Patrick Cain (LoyolaMarymount ’78) and Chapter President TylerGalbraith (Loyola Marymount ’09), this eventgathered alumni and students. After a social, thefeatured panel of alumni discussed how the corevalues of Alpha Sigma Nu have influenced themin their respective professions. Robert Baker(Loyola Maryland ’56), a retired foreign serviceofficer; David Moreno (Santa Clara ’66), a human resources director; Cindy Morgan (LoyolaMarymount ’99), an attorney with Paul Hastings, and Maddy Goodreau (Loyola Marymount’05), Development Associate at the St. Joseph’s Center, generously shared their thoughtswith attendees.

Marquette UniversityBecause many AΣN members are interested in service thisyear, the Chapter organized a panel showcasing the PeaceCorps, Teach for America, Americorps, and the JesuitVolunteer Corps. The panel members described theirorganizations and told their personal stories, provokingcandid conversation. The Chapter opened this event to allstudents. Later in AΣN Week, the Jesuit Communitywelcomed Chapter members to the Jesuit residence fordinner where the hosts made pizzas for the 85 people inattendance. This informal event gave the Jesuits and AΣNmembers and alumni an opportunity to gather.

Regis UniversitySporting their new t-shirts with “Educated by Jesuits,” the IHS symbol, and “Alpha Sigma Nu,”the Regis Chapter raised campus awareness of AΣN. On March 22nd, Chapter membersenjoyed “Pizza with the Jesuits” and discussed scholarship, loyalty, and service. Later in theWeek, the Denver AΣN Alumni Club treated student members to a reception and conversation

We Jesuit university graduates observe with special interest theintersection of today’s world issues and the work that the Societyof Jesus does to respond to the resulting human need. The pastfew years have provided too many examples of that need: thetsunami, Hurricane Katrina, the earthquake in Port-au-Prince, anddomestic issues of poverty, education, and social justice. Often, when I read all that the Jesuits are doing across the world, Imarvel at their commitment and wonder if there isn’t some smallway to participate.

You have seen a recent shift in emphasis and energy coming fromthe Board, Faculty Advisers, and student leaders of Alpha Sigma

Nu. Alpha Sigma Nu is an honor society recognizing academic excellence and meaningfulservice to others. What makes AΣN truly Jesuit is the tenet of loyalty, and often members findthis term truly difficult to define.

In April, I attended the Seattle University induction. As the keynote speaker, President StephenSundborg, SJ, characterized loyalty in this way: as members of the honor society bearing thename Jesuit, our actions as a Society, a Chapter, a Club and a member are informed by “theservice of faith,” and “the promotion of justice.” As Father General Hans Peter Kolvenbachexplained:

So central to the mission of the entire Society was this union of faith and justicethat it was to become the "integrating factor" of all the Society's works, and in thislight "great attention" was to be paid in evaluating every work, including educationalinstitutions.

So let us look at loyalty as both a measure at induction and a measure in all that we do in theyears that follow. We, as AΣN members, are stewards of magis, a life-long call, to the serviceof others, to intellectual rigor, and to the service of faith, and the promotion of justice.

We, as the AΣN Board, promise that this integrating factor will be our guide. The TriennialConference, made possible through your generous support, provided the requisite venue forvision and planning. As a result, Alpha Sigma Nu Chapters held the first annual Alpha SigmaNu Week, universal in focus and unique in execution. Many Alumni Clubs collaborated onthese programs. AΣN is in a unique position to act as a conduit for connecting members toJesuit mission and works as:

• Student Chapters becomes more mission focused and include outreach to alumni

• Alumni Clubs design programs to educate members in trends in Jesuit educationand in local Jesuit projects

• AΣN’s social media venues (the AΣN web site, Facebook and LinkedIn) providenetworking opportunities for members and provide links to Jesuit resources andother sites of interest to members

I look forward to an increasingly engaged membership, and hope that you will contact me withyour comments and suggestions. I feel exceptionally blessed to be leading AΣN at thismoment in time as previous leadership has discerned a path for Alpha Sigma Nu, and currentleadership eagerly takes up the mantle and mission.

This paneladvised on all issues concerning applying to graduate school, and encouraged AΣN membersto pursue further studies.
