Dear Readers, It gives me great pleasure to invite you to go through the current 2012/13 edition of our Annual Report. This year has been a very challenging year for all of us at the foundation. Due to the ongoing limitation of resources, much of our intentions for consolidation and growth of the foundations activities was limited. Never the less we have accomplished a lot in these pressing and challenging times. Our need for a permanent facility for our orphan children affected by HIV/AIDS is still a pressing need. Due to the high rentals of the existing facility at Geddalahalli , Bangalore, we had to shift the children to a house in Rampura Bangalore. We are hoping that some of our donors would come forward to support us in acquiring a facility that addresses our needs. Our operational hubs continue from Bangalore and Hyderabad, our activities and impact are demonstrated in this annual report. our staff at the foundation (Hyderabad and Bangalore) continue to work with dedication even though we were not in a position due raise funds for salary increases for the current year. Since the existing donors have scaled down budgets, to sustain existing salaries is a challenge. I do hope this would be addressed soon through alternative sources and we would be in a position to address this at the earliest. Our online donation (domestic and International) portal is active and can be facilitated through our web site www.thefreedomfoundation.org. Kindly help us in promoting this concept. I do hope that you would take some time to go through this report and give us your valuable feedback. Do send your feedback to my personal email [email protected] On behalf of the board of Trustees I thank all our dedicated staff at Bangalore and Hyderabad for their dedicated services. I take this opportunity to thank our donor community and well wishers for their on going support In closing, on behalf of our beneficiaries, I wish to humbly thank one and all for your ongoing faith and support. Wishing you all the Very Best, Yours Sincerely, Dr.Ashok Rau Executive Trustee/CEO Freedom Foundation-India

The above said table and graph shows the number of clients admitted, discharged, Left against Medical Advice (LMA) and Unfit
for treatment during each month in the year 2012-2013.
THERAPEUTIC SESSSIONS FOR CLIENTS
During the year awareness sessions pertaining to different concepts of addiction/chemical dependency were provided for all
the clients’ along with coping mechanisms to deal with anger, stress and anxiety. The clients were constantly made aware of
ways in which they need to work on improvising their behavior and attitude on a daily basis with the help of few exercises and
activities. The newer admissions were distributed evenly between the groups based on their communication and
understanding capabilities.
Some of the senior members from the Alcoholics Anonymous & Narcotics Anonymous fellowship visited the centre to share
their Experience, Strength and Hope (ESH) to motivate the clients’ and to boost their confidence in the program and also to

SESSIONS FOR FAMILIES:
The psycho education sessions for families on Sundays is helping the co-dependents (family members) to get awareness on
different concepts of addiction/alcoholism, family denial and co-dependency characteristics etc. This also helps them
understand their wards addiction, attitude & behavior problems and also to identify ways through which they could deal with
their co-dependency traits and patterns.
THE LIGHTER SIDE OF RECOVERY:
Other recovery oriented activities, fun activities and role-plays continued at the centre. The clients continue to play volley ball
every evening which gives them a way to ventilate their negative energy. These activities help the clients to have fun and stay
motivated in their recovery and they are also constantly made aware of ventilating their emotions and frustrations
appropriately.
CELEBRATIONS:
The clients celebrated all Indian festivals in the centre with great enthusiasm.Ex: Deepavali, Ganesh Chathurthi, Christmas and
Ayudha puja. Few families made donations of sweets and crackers to the clients.
ORIENTATION PROGRAMMES:
There have been many orientation programmes done for educational institutions from different parts of Bangalore:
Three Students of Psychology from Christ University did their Internship for a period of 2 months.

CHILD CARE:
Programs : 1. POSITIVE KIDS & DIYA CHILDREN HOMES
2. Education & Nutrition Assistance for HIV infected / affected community Children.
Location : Bangalore & Hyderabad
Freedom Foundation (FF) along with the support of other donor agencies functions from the belief that ‘no child needs
sacrifice quality of life to an illness’. The Foundation endeavours to ensure
that the basic rights of all children accessing care through its Child Care
Centres are protected. This includes both HIV infected children and those
affected by HIV.
The child care component at FF comprises both institutional &
community;with the essential crosscutting components of Protection, Health,
Education, Nutrition and Rights.
This program looks into the concept of:
Protected Residential Environment, Education / extra-curricular
activities, Medical Treatment and Nutritional support for Orphan HIV +ve children.
Education & Nutrition for HIV infected / affected children & their families in the community.
This is primarily supported by three major donor agencies: KNH (Kinder Not Hilfe) & CCCYC (The Churches' Council for Child
and Youth Care), OWC (Overseas Women’s Club) and UWBe (United Way of
Bengaluru, Mumbai & Hyderabad).
Residential care and services for HIV Positive Orphans
Started : Year 1996 During the year, 49 HIV +ve orphan children (22 in Bangalore-program named
as ‘Positive Kids’ & 27 in Hyderabad-program named as ‘DIYA’) have been cared
for within the residential facility. In Bangalore, the numbers are reduced to 20
towards the end of the year with the demise of one boy child in September 2012
& with one girl child started working and is staying in a working women’s
hostel since March 2013. Total 29 children were served for the year at Hyderabad Unit. Out of which one child was united
back to her extended family and three children were referred to other like minded NGO for the better educational prospects
and with which the number came down to 23.
The details of the 45 children currently cared are as follows:

A Sad Demise:
One of our children Master Prasanna aged 20 years passed away on 2nd September 2012 due to
Cerebral/ Brain Aneurysm leading to hemorrhage. This was a very poignant and shocking incident for
both the children and the organization.
Essential Independence:
Deepthi aged 19 years was brought to Freedom Foundation by her maternal uncle on 23.05.2000 at her age of 6 years. After
her education and professional course training, she is working in a hotel under Food & Beverage Service Department. Now she
is staying in a working women’s hostel near to her work place. FF has helped this child in each stage of her life and is now able
to lead an independent and enthusiastic life for herself.
Reunion with Family:
*Cherry, aged 20 yrs comes from a well to do family and was brought to Foundation in 2002 by her paternal family after her
parent’s demise as they feared of HIV transmission as well as social out casting on account of her HIV status. Foundation believed
that for Cherry’s holistic development, being part of her family is crucial and hence Foundation relentlessly educated the family to
broaden their mindset on social taboos, myths and misconceptions on HIV for all these years. After all active and regular
counseling, finally the family accepted Cherry in to their home in June 2012. Today, cherry has well settled in the family and
shares her room to her two young cousins. Foundation celebrates this as a big achievement as our aim is just not to support +ve
children but to emotionally safeguard them and to dispel social myths on HIV issues through active counseling.
Shelter, Food & Clothing:
Due to constrained funds and also in need of a compact place for children, after continuous search and planning, the child care
centre in Bangalore is shifted to a new building at Ramapura Cross since mid of Jan 2013. This is a three-floored house with a
kitchen, two halls, six rooms & balconies which can accommodate our 20 children & 3 residential staff with sufficient space for
dining, recreation/T.V./computer, play area etc. Shifting and other arrangements were done by the children and FF staff.
Children are energetic and cheerful with the new atmosphere.
Both the centres (in Bangalore & Secunderabad) are sufficiently equipped with all basic amenities with Television,
Refrigerator, Washing Machine, Water Purifiers, Computers, etc. to make the environment as homely as possible and to
provide basic comforts to the children.
Nutrition plays an important role in acceptability and responsiveness of Highly Active Anti Retroviral Treatment along with
maintaining general health and well being in the children. Attention is paid on the diet plan for all the children so that they get
adequate vital nutrients such as proteins, vitamins, carbohydrates and fats. Menu is changed once in three months with the
involvement of the children to ensure they are given meals that they enjoy.
Education & Extra-curricular activities:
Among the 45 children, 38 are going to school (std I to XII), one is in college (B.Com), one is doing her diploma in Fashion
Designing and one is doing Tailoring training. Four children are not attending school due to poor health conditions.
Considering the improvement of every child’s education, few volunteers from different organizations have come forward to
involve the children in different educational activities like English Grammar classes and Life Skill Education. Few other
individual volunteers are also taking sincere efforts to improve this system by teaching them effectively after their school
8
hours. Because of all this, children have shown improvement in their
studies and learning methods when compared to their previous exams.
Visit to schools on need base and also to get the feedback of children study
& behaviour is done by the staff.
Apart from studies few of our children expressed and discovered their
special interests in other extra-curricular activities. Few children are
attending dance and music classes.
Fourteen of our children at FFB had performed a dance program for
Shiamak Dance Group at AR Auditorium in Malleshwaram (Bangalore).
HAART (Highly Active Anti Retro Viral Therapy):
Among the 20 children in Bangalore, 18 children are on HAART (Highly Active Anti Retro Viral Treatment) – 3 on 2nd line ART & 15 on 1st line ART.
Among the 25 children in Hyderabad, 19 children are on HAART – 3 on 2nd line ART & 16 on 1st line ART.
All are under regular monitor and follow up for their CD4 tests.
Psycho-social support
Children are engaged in regular counselling sessions pertaining
to adolescence, hygiene and cleanliness, discipline and behaviour, stress management and other key topics to
ensure all round development in them through group discussions and individual counseling.
Monthly meetings with children are conducted by the Project Coordinator and the issues regarding their health,
education, interaction with others at the centre, etc. are discussed and sorted out.
One to one discussion is carried out by counselors with children regarding issues faced by them at school and at the
center.
There were two new entries to the home in the month of October 2013. One girl and one boy child aged 9 and 13 yrs
respectively.
Celebrations – Birthdays & Other Occasions:
All the children celebrated birthday at the centre with a
set of new clothes and cutting cake. They also enjoyed and
celebrated all major festivals like Rakshabandhan, Ganesha
festival, Diwali, Christmas, Holi, New Year, etc. All these
celebrations mean a lot to the kids as they reminded that they are a family meant to share in each other’s joy.
Summer Vacation:
During their holidays, children had lots of fun and were engaged with varieties of indoor/outdoor activities. They also
spent time for different chores like reading & writing alphabets, tables, spellings, grammar, handwriting, etc. with the
help of elder children and the caretaker.
Called and spoke to the relatives of few children and were sent to their homes for few days stay. Those children who
dint visit their homes were taken to ‘Water World’ as a one day trip and they enjoyed completely.
9
Volunteer Visits & Recreational Activities:
This year too, we had a good flow of volunteers both in team and individual. Teams from various noted organizations like
HSBC, Accenture, Google, SAP, DELL, TARGET, UWBe & Agilent, HOPE Foundation, OWC, ILANTUS Technologies, Gokuldas
Exports, Brighten School, St.John’s church, Vishranthi Nilaya, Indian Academy College, etc. visited the centre and spent
time with the children by conducting different activities of drawing, painting, quiz, games, etc. More than 100 individual
volunteers visited the centres to celebrate birthdays or to just spend their time with the children by playing indoor or
outdoor games with the children. During the visits, the volunteers provided breakfast, lunch, dinner or snacks, gifts, etc.
and the children enjoyed every occasion and had good fun with all the volunteers.
Few Special moments:
At Bangalore:
FF staff & caretakers at the Bangalore centre voluntarily prepared
special nutritious sweet ‘Obbattu’ with dhal, coconut and jiggery for all
the children and every child enjoyed eating it.
Mr.Biju & family visited the centre and arranged a magic show through
Prof.S.Sathyamurthy and it was a wonderful experience for all the
children.
One individual
volunteer / donor Ms.
Shivani Niranjan from
USA visited the centre, purchased new dress for all the children and
taken all the children for a trip to Fun World providing their snacks &
food for the day.
Ms.Niroopa from Ilantus Technologies coordinated with us and got the
list of wishes from the children to gift for the new year. They visited
our centre with the gifts as per children’s wish like ipods, remote car,
sports shoe, dress, Barbie doll, make-up kit, wrist watch, etc. Children
were happy with their small wishes being fulfilled and thanked them
for their gifts.
10
At Hyderabad:
HSBC organized a visit to Birla Planetarium which was much
appreciated by the children. They also celebrated birthdays of
some children at the center.
Google organized an exposure visit to Google Campus where the
children participated in a drawing competition and were engaged
in games, dancing and many other fun filled activities.
One individual volunteer Mr. Madhu sponsored a trip to the movie
hall for all children to watch Eega with snacks and transport.
2. Education & Nutrition Assistance for HIV infected/affected community Children.
Started : Year 2003
Supported by : CCCYC, OWC, UWBe.
During the year, 160 children from the community were supported under this program (through different projects of CCCYC,
OWC & UWBe) for their Primary, Middle / High school, Diploma and PUC education.
Social worker visited the houses and schools of all the enrolled children.
Monthly visits were done to the schools on a need basis to have interactions with the teachers of the enrolled students and
their academic performance was assessed periodically. The social worker guided their teachers to help these children towards
their development.
House visits wherever needed were planned and done by the social worker to interact with the parents, take feedback &
provide necessary counseling in regard to their kids’ progress and health status of family. Initially in April 2012, a parents’
meeting was conducted to emphasize on children performance for the completed year & plans for the next year followed by
admissions of children. Many parents acknowledged and expressed their gratitude for the support they receive through FF
which lessens their burden of concern about their children’s education.
Self Help Group (SHG) Meeting – ‘Margadharshini’:
A Support Group Meeting is being conducted at FF Bangalore centre every
month for 85 members and everyone is educated on Hygiene/Nutrition for
themselves and their family with precautions on food & drinks for different
seasons. This year couple of meetings were organized through St.John’s
hospital-PRERANA Project on HAART Adherence. Additionally, they are also
motivated on self-employment, importance of yoga, importance of savings, etc.
Every member receives nutrition packs of rice, dhal, oil, sugar and wheat for the
month. This support is of great help for them to manage their family because
most of these women are widows and also undergo frequent health problems
where they are not able to sustain any permanent job or stable earnings.
11
Performance Indicators:
The program has improved the standard of living of all the families directly or indirectly connected to this program and has
also greatly influenced the development of each and every child of the project. Few essential indicators noted through this
program are:
Periodic school and house visits by social worker / counselor and caretakers help the Foundation, teachers and
parents to follow up with the studies of all the children and focus on their development.
Encouraging Extra-Curricular Activities for the children help in developing their additional talents to a certain extent.
Educational support for the children in the community has lessened the financial burden on their parents/caretakers
and they have expressed their thankfulness for the project. The children have also received appreciation letters from
the respective schools for their performance.
Nutritional support through ‘Margadarshini’ program is of great help for each family in addition to which they are
trained and motivated for self-employment.
All documentation and processes for monthly pension for HIV Positive orphan children from government authorities
was completed and the children would now have their own accounts and a small pension amount which they could
use when they grow up.
Challenges:
This program faces different challenges in terms of counseling, funding, managing few amenities for children:
Child care centre being shifted to a little interior place, staff & children are finding difficult for travelling to school,
health facilities, etc.
Stabilization of regular counseling for the children in regard to Education, Discipline, Health care etc.
As the number of beneficiaries to be supported through this program is being scaled down every year, it is a major
challenge to sustain the program to meet the purpose for which we enrolled the children in the program as all the
children enrolled in the program are desperately in need of this support
The program faces challenge to counsel and motivate the parents/children in regard to maintenance of family with
proper education, nutrition & hygiene.
Coordinating and communicating with the school principals and teachers regarding these children and making them
understand the situation is also a regular challenge being faced by our social worker.
The support for food component of residential children is a major challenge and FF is trying the best to overcome this.
Future Plans:
Plan and undergo fundraising activities by approaching various kinds of donors to strengthen and improve the
support.
Try for acquisition of own premises by approaching government for land and other donor entities for construction
Greater involvement & engagement of corporate social responsibility to extend beyond volunteer activities and
include funding
To work towards specific future plans for the elder residential children
12
PREVENTION:
Name of the project : PPTCT (Prevention of Parent To Child
Transmission of HIV/AIDS)
Started : Year 2002
Location : Bangalore & Hyderabad
Supported by : EGPAF (Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS
Foundation)
Freedom Foundation has been executing the PPTCT project funded by Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation since 2002
in the states of Karnataka & Andhra Pradesh reaching out to more than 2,96,029 pregnant women for Voluntary Counseling &
Testing (VCT) at both private & public sectors. This program offered VCT, ARV prophylaxis, prenatal, postnatal, neonatal,
infant feeding counseling and HIV care for all HIV positive pregnant women. Freedom Foundation was responsible for long
term care of mother and child after delivery. The project had detected 1542 positive women and provided PPTCT package to
all who opted to continue their pregnancy. Through the project there were 1007 infants who were followed completely to the
PCR test time and only 27 infants found to be positive bringing the transmission rate down to 2.7%.
For the sustainability of the project, since few years, we have tied up with SACS and are implementing PPP (Public Private
Partnership) model, wherein our objective is to cover 50% of the positive estimates of Bangalore & Hyderabad districts.
Core Objectives of the Project:
To bring down the mother to child transmission of HIV in selected districts of Karnataka & Andhra Pradesh
To increase awareness in ANC women and reduce stigma regarding HIV/AIDS
To provide quality and timely services to the identified positive women and to her extended family
To build the capacities of the partnered hospital staff
BRIEF SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES
For the year 2012-13, FF evolved a sustainable model of PPTCT service delivery in the private sector and FF. This report
narrates the sincere efforts taken and challenges faced to sustain these services and also brief the regular activities and
outcome of Prevention of Mother To Child Transmission of HIV/AIDS (PMTCT) project:
Challenges & Achievements:
A. Continuation of PPTCT services in private hospitals:
PPTCT Services under PPP model in Bangalore:
FFB was working with 6 private hospitals in Bangalore till March 2012 with regular services of counseling,
prophylaxis, infant testing, trainings, etc.
Through continuous discussions & meetings with key personnel of hospitals and KSAPS, FF implemented PMTCT
program under PPP model in three interested hospitals: St.Martha’s, St.Philomena’s & Saptagiri Hospitals in April
2012.
The other three non-interested hospitals continued as Referral sites.
13
PPTCT Services under TA (Technical Assistance) model in Hyderabad:
FFH was working with 6 sites in Hyderabad under TA model for the year 2012-13 with the regular services.
Since March 2013, FFH started implementing PPP model and will work towards saturation of the district.
Sensitization of key stakeholders of hospitals for PPP implementation
Challenges faced:
Since four years, the program is facing different challenges in regard to:
Implementation model of the program – conflicts due to constant change in the model
Data collection, Reporting & Documentation at the private sites due to lack of dedicated personnel at the site.
Targets and Prophylaxis (NACO vs WHO)
Funding constraint from EGPAF
Coordination with KSAPS for trainings and regular supply of all agreed consumables for the PPP sites.
Delay in partnering of FFH with APSACS in order to sustain the project with the program being supported with very
limited budget.
B. Meetings & Trainings:
During this year,
Series of discussions and meetings were done with sites / KSAPS / DAPCU personnel for coordinating regarding
PPP, Prophylaxis guidelines, Documentation procedures, Induction trainings, Supply of kits/registers, importance
of counseling and consent prior HIV testing, etc.
After continuous visits and discussions with KSAPS & DAPCU personnel, the counselors and lab technicians of the
PPP sites were linked for induction training from KSAPS on Counseling & Testing, Prophylaxis as per NACO
guidelines, etc. in the month of Sep 2012.
Regular onsite sensitization was done by FF at all the three sites under different levels of medical and
paramedical staff.
Through continuous trainings and sensitization on Infant feeding, nearly 78% of the delivered babies are
successfully started with Exclusive Breast Feeding.
Discussions with the key people and other staff of the sites not interested for PPP regarding discontinuation of
PPTCT services of FF at their site and also the importance of their support as a referral site.
Regular training and meetings are held to update and enhance the staff knowledge and skills. Training and
sensitization programs are also conducted for the hospital staff
14
C. World AIDS Day (WAD)-2012
FF-PPTCT Bangalore marked the World AIDS Day 2012 by conducting an awareness program on ‘Basic Facts of
HIV/AIDS’ for nearly 30 employees of Larsen & Toubro Company on 21st December 2012. The session was conducted
by Ms.Anthrose Parimala through a powerpoint presentation followed by interaction of the participants. FFH team
conducted street play in collaboration with IDF along with college students at Jubilee Bus stand to mark WAD.
D. Referral Mechanism
In continuation with the same zeal of groundwork and follow up to increase the number of positive pregnant clients to
access PMTCT services, FFB visited and followed up with more than 200 private hospitals / clinics (in and around
Bangalore), 15 NGOs & 500 diagnostic centres and information about the services of FF-PMTCT was provided through
Posters and Prophylaxis sheets (as per PPP Guidelines) with contact details.
As an outcome of this, we were able to serve 9 referral clients with PMTCT services. Out of the total 20 positive clients, 9
clients (45% referrals) were referred from Private Centres
E. Linkages to Govt. and Private facilities:
More than 90% of registered clients are linked with either Govt. of Private ART centres, PLHA networks (like KNP+,
Arunodya Positive People Network etc.) and NGOs (like ACCEPT, SNEHADAAN, INFANT JESUS, World Vision, etc.) for
long term follow up and different services of HAART, CD4, treatment of OIs, Care & Support / stay facilities, Peer
Suppor, Nutrition supplements, Psychological support, Infant Diagnosis etc.
Some of the PMTCT clients were linked and registered in Self Help Group and they are attending the regular monthly
meetings being held at the FF-C & S centre.
F. VCT Services:
For the period April 2012 to Dec 2012, FFB worked with 3 private hospitals under PPP model. By the end of year 2012,
these three sites were handed over to KSAPS and facilitated for a bipartite agreement between the sites and KSAPS.
A total of 3,619 clients have been tested and 20 PLHAs were registered for the period April 2012 to Dec 2012.
FFH has recorded 8,659 ANC women tested for HIV and 45 PLHAs were registered for 6 private hospitals.
15
G. Quantitative Achievements:
Cumulative Report for FF sites from April 2012 to March 2013
Sl. No. Indicators FFB FFH TOTAL
1 Total no. of sites 3 6 9
2 No. of new registrations 4154 14143 18297

J. Future Plans:
FFB already working under PPP has planned to implement services in 20 new private hospitals in the districts of
Bangalore – Urban & Rural and Ramnagar for 50% saturation of PPTCT coverage in these districts.
FFH has planned to start PPP model in the already existing and new private sites.
Through implementation of the program in more than 70 hospitals in Karnataka and Hyderabad, FF has become a
reference centre for PMTCT services. In spite of various challenges and issues faced, the project has established many
important networks and linkages with public and private health providers through number of capacity building
programmes both in Bangalore & Hyderabad.

Activities :
The activities executed through the HAART program under various aspects of client enrolment, counseling, trainings,
awareness programs, donations, meetings/discussions, etc. are explicated in the following sections briefing on both
quantitative & qualitative segments:
1. Referrals & Networking:
Freedom foundation has laid a strong foundation towards its referral network with different hospitals, labs,
diagnostic centres, private practitioners & other NGOs and also through dedicated services to clients which have
contributed nearly 75% of the newly enrolled clients in the project.
Out of 94 clients newly enrolled in Bangalore centre for the year, 35 clients are referred from different private
facilities and private practitioners, 19 clients were referred through old clients who know about FF services, 16
clients had stepped in through advertisements (through website, posters, etc.) and the remaining clients through their
friends/relatives.
Meanwhile, few patients are also referred to other government/private facilities for DOTS /TB treatment, Scans/X-
rays or other diagnosis, surgeries/treatment, etc. as per need.
2. Trainings & Awareness Programs:
FFB staff attended the charity showcase conducted by OWC and presented few IEC materials of handbooks, posters, etc. & sold few greeting cards.
During December 2012, FF marked World Aids Day by conducting awareness program on HIV/AIDS for nearly 200 PU students of Indian Academy College in Bangalore and for truck drivers in Hyderabad.
