NAPLAN TESTING The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. All students in these year levels are expected to participate in tests in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. All government and non-government education authorities have contributed to the development of NAPLAN materials. The tests will be held on Tuesday 9th, Wednesday 10th and Thursday 11th May. Parents of grade 3 & 5 students are requested to make every effort to ensure their children are at school on these days. If you do not want your child to be assessed, please see the teachers ASAP. ATTITUDES TO SCHOOL—STUDENTS’ SURVEY The older children will soon be completing the Attitudes to School survey. The grade 5 and 6 children’s surveys, which are completely anonymous, are sent off to the Department to be collated, along with all others grade 5 and 6 students across the State. The results will be used as part of our school’s An-nual Report to the community and the Education Department. The results help teachers track students thoughts about school and to make changes or improvements where necessary. GRIP LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE 3 of our school leaders– Ryan, Brady and Zoe travelled to Shepparton on Wednesday to participate in a leader-ship conference. They participated in a variety of activities to make them better leaders at our school—this confer-ence once again has proven to be very worthwhile and beneficial to our student leaders so we are looking forward to some very innovative leadership this year!!!! HOT DOGS– TERM 2– EVERY WEDNESDAY Hot dogs will be available on Wednesdays. Please do not send orders on Wednesday as the food will be purchased on Tuesday, and your child will miss out. Hot dogs are $1.00 each. An order form will be sent out each week. Later in the term we may offer dim sims, but will need some extra steamers if this is to happen. LUNCH ORDERS The Merrigum Café has re-opened and have offered to supply lunches again on Mondays and Fridays. The new list is attached and will be available from Friday 28th April.

ATHLETIC SPORTS The Athletics Sports that are held each year in Shepparton have been postponed until late August as the athletics track is being upgraded currently.

P-2 Happenings Our students did a magnificent job of showing respect while participating in the ANZAC Day ceremony on Friday morning. Despite the terrible weather, the ceremony was very well attended by Legatees, Grandparents, parents and friends. The Grade 3-6 students had researched ANZAC service men and women and presented their work during the ceremony. During literacy, we have added four more sounds to their sound pack- qu, v, x and w. In the coming weeks we will begin to learn about open and closed syllables and apply it to our reading and spelling. We have been building the basic building blocks of literacy by getting all students to a point of automaticity, by ensuring they can say the sounds and write them with little mental and physical effort. This is so when they read or write, they can focus on comprehension and getting their ideas down, instead of working out what letter it is and the sound it makes. During maths, the students have been applying their new place value knowledge by making MAB block dinosaurs. They have been comparing smaller and bigger numbers from 1 digit to 5 digit. As part of our dinosaur theme, the students have been working in pairs to come up with a landscape and paint the corridor windows. The windows are not finished just yet, but will be soon. Come in to see their works of art. By now, most of our students have read over 50 nights at home. Please ensure you are signing and writing the number of night read.

3-6 Happenings

It’s been another busy week with both the ANZAC ceremony on Friday and our Student Leaders attending the GRIP Leadership Conference on Wednesday. We were extremely impressed with the respect demonstrated during the ANZAC Ceremony and our 3-6’s managed to earn 5 marbles for their efforts.

In Literacy we have begun work on Persuasive Writing and students have started to analyse mentor texts to break down persuasive structure and language. We have discussed features such as rhetorical questions and using statements to convince the audience to agree. Students have also begun to generate ideas for persuasive topics and we have been impressed with some of the original arguments that have been shared.

Whilst the majority of Numeracy this week has been taken up by Number Fluency Testing we have also started work on Addition and Subtraction. Students are working to increase their automatic recall of simple problems and ensuring they are using smart strategies to solve these.

Genius Hour has started this week and it has been wonderful to see students begin their second question with enthusiasm and original ideas. As always we encourage parents to be involved with their child’s project, but would encourage you to ensure your child isn’t finalising or creating their final project at this stage. The idea of Genius Hour is to plan, research and organise your information and resources before creating.
