INTERNATIONAL CORNER

An organisation called the London Renters Union (LRU) has been in school this week speaking to students and meeting with parents to raise awareness of their work in supporting communities experiencing housing problems. The LRU is a member-led, campaigning union that is taking action to transform the housing system by giving a voice to local communities. Within our school many families are experiencing housing difficul-ties be it disputes with landlords, disrepair, overcrowding or homelessness. LRU organises regular branch meetings, training and social events to build a community of renters who can speak with a united front to tackle exploitation and malpractice within the housing sector. Our parents’ meeting was well attended and gave many the opportunity to share their experiences and to realise the benefits of building a supportive network. LRU will be back in school on Thursday, 28th February at 9.45am to run a Renters’ Rights workshop. The workshop aims to raise awareness of the rights of tenants and to give attendees the confidence and skills to challenge landlords and to know where and how to get good advice. For more information contact Ms Henderson at [email protected] or call 0207 540 5620 ext 140

On February 14th 2019 yr 9s at Rokeby took part in a workshop on Personal Finance. The organisation MyBank, worked closely with the students covering important topics like income tax, brexit and salaries. Leon Dallman 9R said "we learned stuff we didn't know like the difference between a savings account and a current account" The workshop will help year 9s in the lead up to their Personal Finance exams in March.

The Rokeby year 8 rugby team travelled to Barking Rugby club this week to compete in their first major rugby tournament of the year. The team have been working very hard on developing their rugby skills and knowledge over the past few months. The boys have showed a fantastic level of commitment to the Rokeby rugby club through training every week, despite the weather conditions. On the day of the tournament every team member played a valuable position within the squad, dedicating high levels of determination and team cohesion. Overall, the boys came third in their group, drawing two of their games and narrowly losing their final game. The main try scorers in the tournament were Edgar Lungumba 8E and Kennedy Felix 8E. Overall it was a fantastic and valuable experience for the boys involved and I was impressed with every individual. The year 8 squad will continue to practice and develop their holis-tic rugby skills, preparing for future fixtures.
