In May we wrote to every household on the Tamara Estate asking you to tell us what you like and what you don’t like about living here.

We received a mixture of responses from homeowners and our tenants. These have been very helpful and have started to provide us with a fresh understanding of the positive and negative aspects of the neighbourhood.

Thank you...

The Council and Cornwall Housing have concerns about some of the homes that we own on the estate, particularly the 2-bedroom flats with very steep external staircases. We have had complaints from residents in ground-floor flats that they can be disturbed by noise from the flats above them. Also, it’s not ideal having bedrooms accessed via the lounge and ground floor bathrooms accessed via the kitchen.

We also know that there are severe damp problems in many of the houses and flats due to their age, condition and design.

The Council is considering various options including re-building some of our housing stock with new modern, affordable houses and flats. We would like to discuss our thoughts with you and will be writing to you shortly to invite you to a consultation event. We don’t have any plans or proposals yet as we will want your input.

Please look out for more information from us shortly.

The Location

The beautiful views and waterside setting are key reasons why people like this area. People also commented about its convenient location, close to Saltash town centre and Plymouth. Some residents described its quietness and the easy access to the waterfront, rugby club and parkland.

“Run down”

“Better parking”

“Kitchen very small”

“Over grown”

Parking

Lack of parking spaces leading to inconsiderate parking by some is a concern highlighted by many of you. A number of residents suggested that all of the front gardens should be turned into parking spaces, whilst others commented that speed bumps were needed to slow traffic down. Parking is seen as a problem across the estate.

Empty Homes

Clearly, there are some empty properties on the estate that are currently unsuitable as homes for tenants. They have a range of problems; from the steepness of the external stairs, to bad and constant damp. The challenge is to decide what happens next. Continue trying to fix the problems, or decide a new way forward that deals with them?

Public places and spaces

The maintenance and general up-keep of some of the spaces, homes and gardens within Tamara is a concern that many of you share. Other issues you identified include poorly lit pathways, the rundown and disused play-area, overgrown walkways and fly-tipping.

The Homes

There were comments that the 3-bedroom houses have only one toilet which can be difficult for a larger family. Comments were also made about very small rooms including kitchens and bedrooms.

“Amazing Views”

“Quietness”

What you don’t like...

“Waterfront and Rugby Club”

“Beautiful Area”

“Abandoned”
