ting software packages did not provide for thefinancial specialities of the recycling industry, wedeveloped our own financial system which is stillused by most of our customers and comparesfavourably with the market leaders in financialsoftware.

The first employees were hired in 1987, and alarger office was found. In 1990 the company hadalready 40 customers, and the software wasmigrated to the new operating system UNIX.Shortly after a small software company was boughtand further employees added. In 1993 we wonKlöckner Rohstoff Recycling as a customer, thefirst large corporation. For the requirements of thecorporate business an updated version of thesoftware was developed.

In1997 a complete new version 5 was presentedat the ISRI convention in Las Vegas. This versionwas totally independent from the operatingsystem, and was based on a Windows front-end.

In 2002 the company was renamed RECY SYSTEMSAG, a public corporation, with the shares still inprivate ownership. The company has affiliates andoffices in Luxembourg, the United States (BatonRouge, LA), the United Kingdom (Huntingdon), andSlovakia (Zilina). These offices provide locallanguage support, sales represen tation, along withimplementation and training services.

The development of a new version 6 started in 2010,based on dotNET platform, C# as programminglanguage, and Microsoft SQL database. The firstmigrations to the new version were completed in2014. Version 6 is providing touch screen tech -nology for major functions like scales, dispatch, etc.,and is highly interactive. Native apps deliverfunctionality and information on mobile devices liketablets and smartphones.

The company was founded in 1985 as Klarmann& Partner by the two partners Manfred Aniol andBernd Klarmann. Both partners are still managingdirectors and hold 100% of the shares.

The first customer of the newly founded enterprisewas a recycling operation owned by a large glassproducer which collected glass and paper inMunich, Germany. The colour-separated collectionat more than 1,000 locations with more than3,000 containers, required a first-class lo gisticsystem. The partners developed a solution whichoptimized the routing, data collection based onbarcodes and integration with an electronic truckscale. Many of the solutions created then are stillused with today’s customers, naturally with mo -dern equipment.

The partners decided to develop an industrysolution from this application, especially as thesecond customer was a large scrap recycling com -pany in the same town. The concept worked.Recycling – just starting to become a necessity inthe view of the people – became the core businessof the new company. The software was namedRECY, an abbreviation of RECYCLING. As the exis -

dhi Rohstoffmanagement GmbH has opened theirgates in September 2012. The company is a jointventure between the partners Deutsche Edelstahl -werke, IMR Innovative Metal Recycling GmbH andEisen- & Stein-Gesellschaft mbH Horn & Co. Nor -bert Wollersheim is director of purchases of rawmaterial and energy, and Ulrich Müller (IMR) andMichael Diehl (Eisen- & Stein-GmbH) are comple -ting the management team of dhi.51 percent of the shares are owned by DeutscheEdelstahlwerke, the other two partners have ashare of 24.5 percent. The core business of thenew-found enterprise is focused on the purchase, processing and logistic of steel scrap. DeutscheEdelstahlwerke is currently the main consumer fordhi. Approximately 440,000 MT of selected scrapare used for steel production in the plant in Siegen.Another 400,000 MT are consumed in the plant inWitten. Mixed with specific alloy elements theselected scrap is melted in a 130 MT electric arcfurnace, and stainless steel is produced.

Norbert Wollersheim explains: „Driven by such avolume, combined with volatile market and pricefluctuations, Deutsche Edelstahlwerke had to findways to increase the efficiency of their scrapprocurement and logistic, and also realize costimprovements”. Wollersheim manages the rawmaterial purchases of the world-wide operatingsteel producer besides his position in the manage -ment of dhi. “dhi Rohstoffmanagement GmbH isproviding Deutsche Edelstahlwerke with theanswers to this challenge. The headquarters of dhi are located in the Siegenplant of Deutsche Edelstahlwerke. There, IMR, a

recycling company from Krefeld, had opened theirsecond site in spring 2012. On an area of 12,000square meters, the company buys and processesstainless steel scrap and keeps an inventory.Managing director Ulrich Müller states: “We havethe objective to process scrap (non-ferrous andstainless) with the use of the most modern pro -duction equipment, and cycle it back to eco nomicalre-consumption. This helps to reduce the depen -dency on shrinking natural resources.”Eisen- & Stein-GmbH, a company belonging to theHorn Group, is ideally completing the competencesof the partners in scrap recycling. This company isa full service provider for the steel industry, andcontributes especially their long experience inscrap logistics to the new dhi venture. dhi Rohstoffmanagement GmbH started out toorganize their business processes in a very pro -fessional way. They selected RECY SYSTEMS as asoftware partner. Michael Diehl comments on theco-operation with this company: „RECY SYSTEMSis an experienced provider of software for therecycling industry, and dhi as a newly establishedenterprise can only benefit from the long-standingexperience and wealth of functionality RECYprovides. As the processes at dhi will have to beadjusted and optimized with the growth of thecompany, the flexible software modules of RECYwill work well for us.“

Implementation of the software at dhi took sevenmonths including the development of interfaces toexisting scale and ERP system.

Kovosrot also operates a waste managementcompany, trading companies and even a hotel.

It was quite a challenge for RECY SYSTEMS to adaptthe system to the Slavic language with itsnumerous special characters. We hired a new staffmember who did speak the Czech language at thattime, and was a great help in the implementationprocess and the translation of the application andmanuals. The many particularities of the Czech lawwere added to the programs in due time.

Today more than 120 users work with RECY inKovosrot. They use the software for scaleoperations, purchase, sales, price management, contracts, trading, accounting and cost control. Agood management and excellent staff see to it thatthe software is well used.

ContractsYour traders are able to view, update, and createcontracts while travelling, and approve them byemail. The back office is just responsible for con -trol and if needed completion in RECY. This willhelp to keep the metal position up-to-date in a veryshort timeframe and will cut out many interme -diate steps.

Mobile Grading The yard master can control and grade the mate-rial which is loaded and unloaded from the truckswith a smartphone. The smartphone is linked tothe database by Wi-Fi or GPRS. As soon as thescale master has registered the weight in, the yardmaster can see the truck on his device. They canselect the commodities, split the load into multiplecommodities, add deductions, reject the material, and take one or multiple photos to document thequality of the material. As soon as the truck isreleased through a touch on their device, the datais available at the scale. The scale master can seethat the grading is done and take the tare weight ofthe truck. They do not have to enter any data. Therisk of miscommunication is down to zero. Thesefeatures also apply to the grading of sorted mate-rial after the truck has left.

MULCO App The communication between dispatcher and truckdrivers works electronically. The truck driverreceives run orders directly on a tablet in the drivercabin. Time needed for a run, wait and load times, times for events not related to a run, etc. arereliably documented. This data provides an analysisfor the efficiency of your truck fleet and drivers aswell as the cost for servicing your customerlocations. The driver can also collect signatures andphotos with the app. In addition, the app willcommuni cate with RFID devices for tracking ofcontainers and bins which can be equipped withUHF trans ponders. The truck driver can also weightheir load on the way in if the scale master hasalready left for the day.

We regard our customers as partners whom wesupport unconditionally, not only in software issuesbut other issues as well. To protect the investmentsof our customers, we handle new technologies withthe necessary caution. We only use them if ourcustomers gain from that new technology at areasonable price. To give the customer the optimalsolution is our primary concern.

Security and Data ProtectionDue to the flexible menu and program administra -tion in RECY, a user can only access programswhich are on their menu and which their user roleallows. All modifications of data are logged automaticallyby an audit system which provides informationabout by whom and when a modification wasdone.
