We have had a great start to the year in our new Science Centre! The students have shown great enthusiasm during science lessons and have been fully engaged with the first term focus of Physical Sciences. We have been investigating how to make objects move, observing the effects of gravity, learning about how light and sound are created, designing and testing simple machines and experimenting with different types of electrical circuits.

Many thanks to the school community whose fund-raising efforts and support have made this all possible.

Congratulations to Claire Garner from 4SW for making the winning suggestion for the Name the Skeleton Competition... 'Bonaparte'!

Franklin the Turtle has enjoyed meeting so many new children and is eagerly looking forward to his new tank that should arrive soon.

Request for Donations of Recycled Materials

The Science Centre would be happy to accept donations of the following materials:- Glass Jars - Cardboard Tubes - Small Wood Off-Cuts - 1 Litre Milk Cartons (washed)- 1.25 Litre PET bottles

If you have other materials you think might be useful for the Science Centre, please contact Dylan.   [email protected]

As I am sure you all know our amazing canteen is one of the schools greatest assets and it needs your help!!!Leelee who runs our canteen would even give Jamie Oliver a run for his own “Pukka produce” and he would saluteher incredible menus, with fresh and healthy ingredients, all sourced from the local markets (& even her own vegie patch at times!). This lady is really quite incredible….and now she needs your help!!!

2014 Canteen helpers will be asked to give up about 2-3 hours of their morning (usually 9-11am or until 1pm if you can spare longer), a maximum of once per term, to work alongside Gold Streets’ very own Master Chef, Leelee!

In return, you will not only be subsidised from your school fees but you will learn how to make and taste some amazing food and your kids will LOVE to see you atsnack time.

If you would be interested please either email Nia in office or contact Bridgette Connor with your day of preferenceas a roster will be drawn up very soon. (PrepPH or 5MLor email [email protected])

Calling all Parents…Canteen helpers urgently needed!!

We are four friends from Grade 3 organising a time capsule. Mr Warren is supporting this idea.

We had hoped to bury the time capsule whenThe Di Nevile Science Centre was opened.

However, we think it is even better if it is buried on April 1 this year when the school will be 140 years old exactly.

The Time Capsule is not very big so we  are asking mums, dads, kids and friends to suggestWHAT WE WOULD PUT IN THE CAPSULE.

We want to bury the capsule for 30 years so kidsat Gold St now might bring their children on April 1 2044 to celebrate their time at Gold St and look at what is in the capsule.

We think a small photo of every kid in the school (maybe on a USB or maybe a very small photo in a book) would be a good idea and maybe (notes and coins?), but we need lots of other ideas too.

Please help us with your ideas. You can email Mr Warren - [email protected]

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGYSafe and Responsible Use of Digital Technology at CliftonHill Primary School.

Each year Grade 2 - 6 students take home an Acceptable Use Agreement for using Digital Technology to read through with their parents, sign and return to school.

This document had, in the past, been written by a group of teachers. This year we asked a group of volunteers from Grade 5 and 6 to work together to rewrite this document, ensuring that the language was student friendly and included all the necessary points for being Safe and Responsible when using digital technology.

The participating students worked during 4 or 5 lunchtimes to finalise this document which will be presented at the Assembly this coming Friday and will then be sent home. The children in Prep and Grade 1 will read this document in class with their teachers. Sally and Vicki would like to thank the students for their input of ideas, enthusiasm andcooperation withinthe group.

A SLICE OF MANDARIN

In Chinese culture, we also have a day to celebrate love called Qi Qiao Jie or the Double SeventhFestival. While we don’t give out flowers or chocolate, there are several interesting tradition aboutthis romantic day for lovers.

According to the legend, the seven daughters of the Goddess of Heaven caught the eye of a cowboy during one of their visits to earth. The daughters were bathing in a river and the cowboy, Niu Lang, decided to have a bit of fun by running off with their clothing. It was the prettiest daughter, Zhi Nu (who happened to be the seventh daughter) who asked him to return their clothes.

Of course, since Niu Lang had seen the daughter, Zhi Nu, and they fell in love and got married. The couple lived happily for several years. Eventually however, the Goddess of Heaven became fed up with her daughter's absence, and ordered her to return to heaven. However, the mother took pity on the couple and allowed them to be reunited once a year. Legend has it that on the seventh night of the seventh moon, magpies form a bridge with their wings for Zhi Nu to cross to meet her husband.

nǐ hǎo! It’s your friendly dragon, xiǎo lóng. Last Friday was Valentine's Day, where people give loved ones flowersand chocolates.

Today, younger Chinese are often unfamiliar with the holiday, and more likely to celebrate Valentine's Day on February 14th. Still, in some cities efforts are being made to bring back many of the traditional festivals - including Double Seventh Festival - in order to attract tourists. For example, in Hong Kong young girls still display needlework, burn incense and make offerings to the night sky.

Facepainting is an art as well as a skill. Over the last 6 years, one of the parents Dawn Anderson has built up our facepainting stall at the CHPS school fair to be one that makes children happy and also creates beautiful designs.

If anyone is interestedin helping out in the fairwith this stall it is nevertoo early to express interest.

Dawn holds a free training session for interested parents in Sept or October preceding the fair. No previous experience required except for an eye for design.

Due to keen interest in learning in depth skills and professional practices in facepainting Dawn will be holding an early workshop on Sun 2nd March 1-4 pm at a small cost offered only to CHPS parents and caregivers.

If anyone is interested, please email Dawn on [email protected].

Examples of Dawn's work can be seen on www.elfineyes.com.au

Inspired by the bushfires that have affected many Australians, ‘Fire’ is a moving and sensitive story of a natural disaster as seen through the eyes of a cockatoo. The fire mercilessly engulfs homes and land, leaving a devastating path of destruction. Jackie French and Bruce Whatley also created the book ‘Flood.’

‘What's your story?’ is a beautiful book about friendship. The backdrop is the First Settlement and it describes the friendship of a little orphan boy from England, Leonard and his friendship with a little Aboriginal girl called Milba. Leonard is intrigued by Australia's fauna as it is completely different to anything Leonard had previously seen, and it is with this, the story develops. ‘What's your story?’ uses ceramic artwork created from the renowned and celebrated Australian artist Bern Emmerichs and written by Melbourne writer Rose Giannone.

Midnight By Mark Greenwood and Frane Lessac

A new narrative non-fiction picture book for older readers from the award-winning duo Mark Greenwood and Frane Lessac. A foal is born at midnight, on the homestead side of the river. Coal black.Star ablaze. Moonlight in her eyes. On October 31, 1917, the 4th and 12th Regiments of the Australian Light Horse took part in one of the last great cavalry charges in history. Among the first to leap the enemy trenches was Lieutenant Guy Haydon riding his beloved mare, Midnight. This is their story.

A New Friend for Marmalade By Alison Reynolds

Following on from ‘A year with marmalade’, this story is about accepting new friends, even when they do things a little differently from you. It’s about facing danger which can be overcome with just a littleco-operation and it revolves around a special little cat called Marmalade.

My Two Blankets By Irena Kobald and Freya Blackwood

Cartwheel has arrived in a new country, and feels the loss of all she's ever known. She creates a safe place for herself under an 'old blanket' made out of memories and thoughts of home. As time goes on, Cartwheel begins to weave a new blanket, one of friendship and a renewed sense of belonging. It is different from the old blanket, but it is eventually just as warm and familiar.

The Poppy By Andrew Plant

Local author Andrew Plant has kindly donated books to our library and even borrowed some of our war books when researching this new book. ‘The Poppy’ is the true story of one of Australia's greatest victories ; a desperate night counter-attack in the French village of Villers-Bretonneux on Anzac Day 1918. The book is stunningly illustrated with over 70 paintings.

Paruku: The Desert BrumbyBy Jesse Blackadder

From deep in the Kimberley Desert comes a legend of wild brumbies with Arabian bloodlines, who can run like the wind. Paruku, the young bay stallion, flees from humans who invade his desert sanctuary, but is haunted by an ancient memory of being ridden.

Thirteen-year-old Rachel is fast outgrowing her first pony. When her father, an equine vet, is offered the job of capturing wild brumbies for the endurance stables of Sheik Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum of Dubai, Rachel travels with him into the remote desert landscape of the Kimberley. Captivated by the wild power and majesty of Paruku and his kin, she is torn by the prospect of taking away their freedom.

But is there a chance she could keep Paruku for herself? A moving tale inspired by the true story of the Kimberley brumbies and their journey to Dubai.

Feel free to come in and see us or email if you have any questions about the library.
