28th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Twenty-Eighth Sunday of Ordinary Time – This Sunday we are being

invited to reflect on Giving Thanks. God’s faithfulness to us, the promise of

His Covenant is ever played out at all times. Saint Paul reminds his Disciple

Timothy of this in his letter – all that Timothy does must be surrounded by

remembering Jesus Christ raised from the dead. For Saint Paul and like-

wise for Timothy and for us, this remembrance will lead us to bear many

things because of Him who died for us. The Gospel story of the Ten Lepers

references for us all that God has done, is doing, and will continue to do –

remembering that God shows us his mercy and His kindness, should fire our hearts with Gratitude, thus result-

ing in a response back to him of thankfulness. There is a question Jesus poses to the one leper that did return –

“Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine? For our reflection, it is important to note that

Jesus is not just indicating a common courtesy as we might reference Thankfulness. Jesus is referencing some-

thing that is expected of all who have received great Good from a loving God. Let’s pray for hearts and minds

that are always and eagerly ready to Give Thanks to God for all things – this attitude of gratitude will indeed

change our lives, and will also impact those around us.

Happy Thanksgiving – This weekend we are invited to “Give Thanks”. I pray that each of you will have an

opportunity to recollect the many blessings received from our Good and Gracious God!!! Family, Friends, Faith

– let’s take some time and think of the many reasons we have to give thanks. Life unfortunately can be so fast-

paced and things pass us by so quickly; this weekend let’s take some quality time to reflect upon those people

who have left a footprint, who have shared with us from their hearts, the depth of love. May we give thanks to

God, and strive to impact and mark people that we encounter with love that God has touched us with.

Time of Transition – On Saturday, September 21, a leadership prayer breakfast was held at Saint John XXIII.

The intent behind this venture was to bring those involved in leadership together, to share a breakfast, to hear

some reflection points presented by the Transition Team for our three churches and to have some conversation

together. The follow-up is to invite those in various points of leadership in all three churches to bring the mes-

sage back to their respective groups and committees, to create another area of conversation about how we will

be a New Parish/ Stronger Together. While there remains much work in this transition time that has to contin-

ue, an important emphasis has to be that we are not in this venture alone. Over these next weeks, the Transition

Team hopes to be able to provide more of the steps as we move forward in becoming one Parish – Divine Mer-

cy Parish. My hope as Pastor is that you will keep our churches, our Transition Team and one another in prayer.

We can do nothing of any value, if God is not the center of this whole process. May our intentions lifted up to

God be heard, and may our actions follow as He provides for us, the way forward. AMEN!

Divine Mercy Parish – As we have received our name for our new parish designation, we also continue mov-

ing forward with the three individual Church names. Saint John XXIII, Saint Clement and Saint Andrew. Each

of these three Church names have designated Feast Days. With the busyness of the Fall, and with the time of

adjusting to the new environment, I have been negligent of announcing these Feast days and putting out particu-

lar invitation for the people in all our Parish to celebrate together these Feast Days.

October 11 – Feast of Saint John XXIII

November 23 – Feast of Saint Clement

November 30 – Feast of Saint Andrew

As we continue to forge our way forward, I invite you to celebrate Mass in the particular Church on the Feast

day and spend some time in prayer for the people of that Church, who are our brothers and sisters. In addition

to these important ways of celebrating our Feasts, I encourage and invite some creativity and imagination to

discover and share other ways we may celebrate our Feast Days as we grow into being the Parish of Divine

Mercy. Saint John XXIII Feast was on this past Friday where we gathered for Mass and a time for adoration

before the Blessed Sacrament.

Please Note: Tuesday Mass Times... On the fourth Tuesday of each month, Mass will be at 12noon instead of 6:30pm. (except June, July, Aug. Dec.)

Join us Wednesday mornings at 10:00 in St. Clement Church hall as we begin a 10 – ses-sion course on “The Eucharist – The Holy Mass” by Dr. Brant Pitre, beginning on Oct. 16. If you are interested in this course contact Corinne at [email protected]

For “cradle Catholics,” this is often a sacrament they’ve participated in nearly every week of their lives—for some, every day. For non-Catholics, it is a foreign rite that many are cautious to ap-proach. In both groups there is likely a varied understanding of the Eucharist and what the Church teaches about this sacrament, described as the “source and summit of the Christian life.” Over the course of this study, Dr. Brant Pitre will take us back to the biblical roots of the Eucha-rist. Together we’ll see how this sacrament is deeply rooted in Sacred Scripture. We’ll explore its origins, its foreshadowing in the many mysterious and miraculous events of the Old Testament and gospels, and the essential purpose and reality of Jesus’ words and actions at the Last Supper. In the end, we’ll examine how the Eucharist is not just a something, but rather Someone with whom we are meant to be in communion.

Catholic Christian Outreach (CCO) is an Ca-nadian organization which has developed Faith Studies for Catholics. If you are inter-ested in refreshing your understanding of the Faith maybe DISCOVERY is something that would be of help to you. DISCOVERY invites participants to encounter Christ through a simple but challenging look at the Gospel message. You can contact us at : [email protected]

CATHOLIC CHRISTIAN OUTREACH

This Monday is Thanksgiving Day and although we won't have any classes this weekend, I take this oppor-

tunity to thank God for all the families taking part in our program. May this journey that we are taking bear

much fruit among our families in the years to come!

I have had to change the class time for 1st Reconciliation to Oct. 19, which is a Saturday, from 11 to 12 noon. This

class is for children who are in grade 2 or older who have not yet received the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

The St. Clement Choir, which serves the 9:30 Sunday Mass, is seeking more voices. There is no musical experience necessary to join. For those who desire, there is

the opportunity to serve as a cantor and partic-ipate in choir pieces with harmony. Practice follows the 9:30 Sunday Mass, after hospitality if it is being offered. Come by the choir section next to the piano anytime and give us a try. If you need more information, please don’t hesi-tate to contact Glenda Carson at 902-463-1702 or by email at [email protected]

Voting as a Catholic Canadian On October 21, Canadians will vote on the leadership of our nation. Do you know how you’re going to vote? As Cath-olic Canadians it is important to make our vote count. Below are some helpful resources to inform your decision-making process: A variety of election-related topics on www.archtoronto.org/election This site from the Archdiocese of Toronto offers information about what the Catholic Church teaches on human dig-nity, poverty, homelessness, health care, indigenous issues, newcomers, and the environment – all issues that are important to Canadians and hopefully to those that will lead our country. CCCB Releases Federal Election Guide The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has produced a 2019 Federal Election Guide. This electronic resource is available on their website (www.cccb.ca )or by clicking here. The guide's content offers a reflection on key ethical and moral issues that voters, especially Catholics, may want to consider. Archbishop Mancini’s 2015 pastoral letter: Responsibility for Christian Witness in the Politics of the Secular Age In 2015 Archbishop Mancini wrote a pastoral letter just prior to our previous federal election. In it he offers a reflec-tion, through the lens of our Catholic teachings, on the question of how a Catholic engaged in civic life can give au-thentic and credible witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ and support Church teaching in the present secular envi-ronment. To read the full letter go to the Archdiocesan Website.

OUR MISSION: To promote the Sacred tradition, Sacred Scripture

and the living Magisterium of the Catholic Church, through the sale of

books, multi-media and other materials. To help Catholics to a bet-

ter understanding of their Faith, to defend it and to cultivate the good

habit of reading.

The Franciscans of Halifax have begun a furniture bank located at St. Anthony Parish Hall, 27 Farrell St., Dartmouth N.S. We will serve individuals and families who are in need of household items. Are you registered for this year’s Assembly? Archbishop Mancini is. So is Coadjutor Archbishop Dunn!

And they would love to see you there. This is the one time of the year that Archbishop Mancini invites the whole archdiocese to gather with him

to talk about and more importantly pray about the future of the Church in Halifax-Yarmouth. The Assembly is a great way to gain a better understanding of why parishes across our Archdiocese are doing what they’re doing. There are also great workshops to help you grown in your faith, regardless of where you are in their faith journey. Some examples of workshops include: Rev. Craig Cameron : Vocations: I have one? Each of us has a vocation - a personal call to holiness. Sr. Nuala Kenny, SC & The Ministry of Care and Companionship: Equipping Missionary Disciples of Care and Companion-ship Père Pierre Drouin, c.j.m. : L’Atelier sur la communion fraternelle L’assemblée du Peuple de Dieu met l’accent, cette an-née, sur l’importance de l’unité dans la mission que nous partageons tous. Mr. Ron Huntley: Leadership: Recognizing and Honing your Gifts: Each person has the capacity to be leader in some way. Through your baptism you have been given gifts that are to be used! …and several more! Including workshops with our Archbishops. We encourage you to gather a group from your parish to come out to this year’s Assembly. The more people at your par-

ish who have a deeper sense and ownership of our shared mission, the more disciples we make to bring about the king-

dom! For more information and to register for this year’s Assembly go to: www.halifaxyarmouth.org/assembly
