VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION TWENTY-SIXTEEN

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24th From 11 AM—1 PM AT LCCOA—1380 Boone St., Troy MO 63379

Congratulations to Ted Hampton for winning the

Queen size hand-sewn quilt! Thank you to everyone who purchased raffle tickets! And we are so grateful to the Quilting Group for creating & donating the quilt to raffle for LCCOA. Troy’s quilting group meets on Tuesday mornings in the activity room!

WHERE POSITIVE CHANGE BEGINS IN OUR COMMUNITY

Positive change starts out small… often with just the spark of an idea. It requires the

work of many hands and the support of strong partners to turn that spark into a transform-

ative force. LCCOA is always looking for more like-minded individuals, and professional sup-

port that will allow our organization to move forward. Society’s view of aging is changing as

75 million baby boomers begin moving into retirement. Each day 10,000 people reach age

65, which has served as a signal that it is time to retire ever since the Retirement Age Act

was passed back in the early 1930s. It is projected that the current 40 million senior citizens

will balloon to 89 million by 2050.

Our mission is to enrich the quality of life, and support independence & vitality for

those over 50, and the community around them. We accomplish this by providing educa-

tion, nutritious meals, consultation and technical assistance programs that are responsive

and effective. LCCOA is committed to identifying and offering the highest quality programs

and services to support the needs of our aging community and the Lincoln County, Missouri

as a whole.

Perhaps volunteering is something that would interest you, a friend or loved one?

We are always looking for drivers, even as back-up/fill-in. There are also opportunities

in the kitchen, garden, office, at our other sites (Elsberry, Silex & Winfield), and even in roles

we haven’t thought of yet… So if you would like to help enrich the quality of life of your

neighbors, and support independence & vitality, let us know! We are always open to sug-

gestions on new programs or activities that could be implemented at our centers.

COULD YOU USE A LITTLE ASSISTANCE? There are many programs out there to help with heating/cooling assistance, or to pay water or electric bills. LCCOA can help connect you with these programs. But is there anything for smaller needs? Yes! There may be a way we can help! We have been contacted by an anonymous donor who would like to give funds to pay for repairs/maintenance for local seniors. Funds will be given for repairs or maintenance to homes, yards, vehicles, etc… even basic yard work for the summer, or to pay for our meals if money is tight. If you have a need, we want to help see it filled with assistance from this generous donor. Not all applications will be approved. No LCCOA staff, board, or volunteer will choose the recipients. Simply fill out a request form and LCCOA will turn it in to the donor. We hope for every request to be approved.

Best Wishes & Good Luck!

DAY TRIPS JEFFERSON CITY TOUR on TUESDAY, JULY 19th MISSOURI GOVERNOR’S MANSION & STATE PENITENTIARY

We will tour the infamous Missouri State Penitentiary, called the “Alcatraz of the Midwest”. Here we’ll hear the history and stories of inmates, tour the underground dungeon cells, see the upper & lower yards, inmate cells, and gas chamber. This facility was

built in 1836, which means the tour is not suitable for wheelchairs, crutches or walkers,

and is not air-conditioned. However, many have joined in this tour using canes without

problems. But be sure to wear comfortable shoes (no sandals). The tour will be from 10a-12p. Lunch menus will be available en route, then collected and taken to the restaurant

for us; saving time. Lunch is a Dutch Treat, so participants will pay for their own meal. The tour of the Governor’s Mansion is schedule after lunch at 1:30pm. Since it was

built in 1871, the Missouri Governor’s Mansion has been the official residence of Show-Me State Governors. On this visit we’ll travel back in time and experience one of the oldest and most beautiful governors' homes in the U.S. Governor Jay Nixon and First Lady Georganne Wheeler Nixon welcome us to their home to learn more. We will leave the Troy LCCOA parking lot at 7:30am, and expect to return around

6pm. The cost is only $30, and is due by Monday, July 11th. Call (636) 528-7000 or stop

by 1380 Boone Street to reserve your spot!

Did You Know the home hosts

more than 60,000 visitors annually!

TARZAN AT THE IMAX

on SATURDAY, AUGUST 13th

The details of this trip are still in the works, pending interest. We will be going to

the IMAX Theater to experience the Legend of Tarzan in 3D. "Many years after he left

Africa behind, Tarzan (Alexander Skarsgård) returns to the Congo to serve as a trade

emissary, unaware that he is actually a pawn in a Belgian captain's deadly plot."

Our meal will be buy-your-own at Ethel’s Smokehouse in O’Fallon. Missourian’s have

been eating and drinking at Ethel’s since 1926. They’re famous for their hearty barbecue, so

be sure to bring an appetite! Call (636) 528-7000 or stop by 1380 Boone Street to express

your interest.

The exercise class is taking a break during July & August and will resume in September.

Okay, who ordered the heat?! WOW…has it been warm. I know you all are well

aware of how much I hate the heat of the summer….but my vegetable garden

is loving it. And that I am thankful for! I guess I will take the heat over the rain

we had last year. It has been one year since the flood, and the thought of it still

makes me cringe!

Summer is a fun time of year for most, but it is easy to forget that it can also be

a dangerous time of year. As we age we are more prone to heat related illnesses.

We all know, keeping hydrated is extremely important. I carry the same bottle

of water around with me everywhere and it makes it easier for me to keep track

of how much water I am drinking during the day. Coconut water is a great

source of electrolytes, a natural sports drink. I make sure to drink plenty of it

during the summer, and especially when I find myself sweating from heat or ac-

tivities. If you haven’t tried it, grab a bottle at the store! It’s very tasty…and

oh so good for you!

Turn those AC’s on! If you don’t have air conditioning at your house, get some-

where to get cool. All of our centers are a great place to enjoy the AC, as well as

movie theaters, grocery stores etc. The heat can sneak up on you…don’t wait

until it’s too late!

Just a reminder, all of our centers will be closed on Monday July Fourth.

Have a Happy and safe Fourth of July! ~ Ashley

Angel’s Angle TROY Answer : Some at 20 yrs but most not till 50 or older.

Are You Extra-Ordinary?

Many, many years ago, when I completed my senior year of high school, I was

assigned three books to read. One of the books was a novel by a Russian author

named Fyodor Dostoyevsky. The title of the book is Crime and Punishment and it be-

came one of my favorite novels.

The theme of the story focuses on an impoverished former student, Rodion

Raskolnikov, who is convinced that it is permissible, maybe even admirable, to commit

a crime if it rids society of undesirable people. Rodion lives in St Petersburg, Russia

and often meets with friends for drinks and to discuss the philosophy of life. It is during

these discussions that he comes to the conclusion that the world is made up of ordinary

and extra ordinary people. In his mind, an extra-ordinary person is not only capable of

committing a crime but has a right to do so.

Rodion decides to test his theory by killing a pawn broker, who he believes to be

despicable and harmful to society. By killing her, he would be ridding society of a use-

less character and, with the money he would steal from her, he could do good deeds.

This would also help justify his actions. Because he considered himself extraordinary,

he believed that he could get away with it.

He carries out his plan and, although the police suspected him, they were never

able to prove that he did it. It would seem that he did in fact get away with it. However,

as time went on, his conscience got the best of him and, in the end, he confessed to the

crime. It seems that he was ordinary after all.

I believe that we are all ordinary people who, from time to time can do extraordi-

nary things. At some point in our lives, we are a hero to somebody. It is then that we

have the best opportunity to do the right thing; to set the right example. It is our best

chance to impact someone else’s life in a positive way. Don’t waste that opportunity.

Forgiveness is Power Forgiveness is the power to choose how events affect you.

You benefit immensely when you choose to forgive and so does everyone around

you. Whether you need to forgive others, or need to forgive yourself, doing so sets you

free from the past and enables you to fulfill your true potential. Forgiveness allows you

to break free from limiting beliefs and attitudes. It frees up your mental and emotional

energies so that you can apply them to creating a better life.
