East Worthing Parish Newsletter the Roman Catholic communities of Holy Family, Lancing & St Charles, Worthing part of the Arundel & Brighton Diocesan Trust, a Registered Charity No. 252878 10th April 2016 : 3rd Sunday Easter Year C Volume 09 Issue 20 Second Chances . . . . . After the Resurrection, we might have expected the disciples to rush off in a frenzy of enthusiasm spreading the good news, but no, today we find them back on the lake fishing. When you stop for a minute to imagine what it might have been like to be in Peters shoes perhaps it isnt all that surprising. Peter had given up everything for Jesus and promised his all. But despite all his promises, Peter had ended up denying Jesus three times. Almost certainly he would have been suffering from feelings of crippling guilt and insurmountable failure. Is it really any wonder that fishing suddenly seemed a more attractive option than evangelising? But for Jesus, giving up is not an option. Jesus appears at dawn by the lakeside where he asks Peter. Do you love me?Three times Jesus asks the same question the same number of times that Peter had previously denied him. Its as though Jesus is giving Peter the chance to put right a wrong. This is part of Peters healing process. This is Peters big chance to put his hopes and dreams back on track. Then Jesus, who has known all along what is in Peters heart, gives him a gentle reminder of his commission to shepherd his Church. Theres a heartening message for us too in this story. How many times do we see in the Bible people getting not just second chances but third and fourth chances? We can get things wrong and we can let ourselves down but God who knows what is in our hearts, reminds us that he is there to take away the burden of our guilt and of our failures and set before us new horizons and second chances. We are not expected to be perfect; we are only expected to be human. Question of the week - Whom should I seek out this week and invite to a real breakfast with me? Second Chances . . . . . After the Resurrection, we might have expected the disciples to rush off in a frenzy of enthusiasm spreading the good news, but no, today we find them back on the lake fishing. When you stop for a minute to imagine what it might have been like to be in Peter’s shoes perhaps it isn’t all that surprising. “Do you love me?” Three times Jesus asks the same question … the same number of times that Peter had previously denied him. It’s as though Jesus is giving Peter the chance to put right a wrong. This is part of Peter’s healing process. This is Peter’s big chance to put his hopes and dreams back on track. Then Jesus, who has known all along what is in Peter’s heart, gives him a gentle reminder of his commission to shepherd his Church. There’s a heartening message for us too in this story. How many times do we see in the Bible people getting not just second chances but third and fourth chances? We can get things wrong and we can let ourselves down … but God who

knows what is in our hearts, reminds us that he is there to take away the burden of our guilt and of our failures and set before us new horizons and second chances. We are not expected to be perfect; we are only expected to be human.

Question of the week -

Whom should I seek out this week and invite to a real breakfast with me? Can I invite them to a spiritual breakfast with Jesus in a community that welcomes everyone to Jesus’ feast of mercy?

In the event of an emergency when a priest is urgently required and there is no answer at the above telephone number please ring St Mary’s (200416) or St Peter’s (01273 452654).

P A G E 2 Parish Office . . . . .

Parish Deacons: Rev. John Body 762038

Rev. Patrick Moloney Rev. Phil Richardson 752292

Office Hours : Monday - Friday 09.30 - 11.30am

Fr Daryl’s Surgery this week : Tuesday, 17.30-18.30.

Newsletter Editorial : Items for possible inclusion in the Parish Newsletter (if there is room) need to be received (in writing please) at the Parish Office by midday on Wednesday.

General Parish Information . . . . . Parishioner Registration : Every household within the Parish is requested to complete a ‘Parishioner Registration/Census’ form so that our Parish records may be kept up to date. These forms can be found in the church narthex and should be completed fully before being returned to the Parish Office. Should you move address within the Parish at any time please complete a new form and write ‘AMENDMENT’ across the top of the form. Thank you.

Hospital : Parishioners are advised that our local General Hospital (Worthing) in Lyndhurst Road does not give the names of inpatients to the Chaplaincy Department. This means that should you find yourself admitted as an emergency case to the hospital you will need to inform the staff that you wish the Roman Catholic Chaplaincy to be informed, either yourself or through a relative. If you are going into hospital as a ‘planned admission’ you are strongly encouraged to contact the Parish Priest well beforehand so that, if appropriate, the Sacrament of the Sick can be celebrated beforehand.

Infant Baptism : Infant Baptisms are intended for the children of practising parishioners only and are celebrated on five occasions during the year after parents and godparents have completed a course of preparation. There can be no celebration without this important course. The dates of the courses for the current year can be found in the application form in the church narthex (bright green). Baptisms do not take place during the seasons of Advent or Lent.

Sacramental Preparation : Notice of the availability of application forms for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist will be made in the Parish Newsletter between the school Summer Half Term and 31st August each year. Possible candidates for Confirmation should respond to the announcements made in the Parish Newsletter during the Autumn school term. Parishioners are advised that it is very difficult to imagine that any family/individual who is not regularly practising their faith as a member of our community could possibly be ready to celebrate a Sacrament of the Church.

Marriage Preparation : Marriages are celebrated by appointment with the Parish Priest. It should be remembered that in England and Wales six months minimum notice is required before a marriage may take place; this is a requirement of the Church for all marriages that involve a Roman Catholic (even if they are not taking place in the Catholic Church). It is also necessary that one of the parties must have a meaningful connection with the Parish. Marriages do not take place during the seasons of Advent or Lent.

Church Mouse (cub reporter). . . The musings of one of God’s smallest creatures on events in and around the Parish over the past seven days . . . .

A very busy week here at the Presbytery since Fr D came home from his Lourdes trip with special needs children.

On his day off on Monday he spent longer in bed than he normally allows himself before starting to deal with the washing the trip had generated. Once the big white boxes in the utility room were running at full speed he turned his attention to the build up of post that had accumulated whilst he was away. There was also the matter of a couple of plastic panels that had detached themselves from a bay window on St Charles’ Parish Centre in all the wind that ran along the coast during the early hours on Easter Monday morning - when he was leaving for the airport (04.00) in the morning he found them on the drive and just placed them safely inside the house until his return.

On Tuesday, after celebrating Mass, he caught up with two of our local undertakers to see what was happening concerning two deaths in the Parish that occurred during Holy Week and will necessitate Requiem Masses (- one took more research that he was expecting but he got there in the end!). In the late afternoon Fr D began to get together the necessary information for an audit of last year’s finances in the Parish. Each year three large, three medium and three smaller parishes of the diocese are randomly chosen for this audit as part of the requirements of the Charity Commission. Later he was dealing with a couple of parishioners who came along to his Parish Surgery.

On Wednesday Fr D returned to some of the post after celebrating Mass and started paying some of the more recent bills that have arrived. In the afternoon he was with the ladies of the Parish Catholic Women’s League as they held their Annual General Meeting (the 60th one!). After the AGM Fr D went to see the widow of one of the people who had died during Holy week to arrange the funeral service and, after supper, he complete work on the service and booklet.

After Thursday morning’s Mass Fr D went off hot-footed to Bishop’s House in Hove to see how much had appeared in his ‘in-tray’ since the week before Holy Week. Fortunately there was not too much of a build up and he was able to write up a couple of Sentences for a couple of cases he judged on March 18th, before the Easter services hit!

Mass may be offered for both the living and the dead and also for most other intentions. We do our best to try and accommodate specific dates but this can be especially difficult on weekends and at less than three months notice.

‘Mass Intentions’ are published in the Parish Newsletter on the weekend before they are celebrated although sometimes a Requiem Mass will ‘bump’ an intention to a later date.

Campaign To Make Tax Fair . . . . .

You’ve heard about tax dodging companies like Starbucks and Amazon in the UK. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Every year, unfair international tax rules let companies dodge billions of pounds of tax in developing countries – tax that could pay for essential services like schools and hospitals. A fair tax system means everyone pays their fair share – big companies included. It’s time to make tax fair. Everywhere!

To do:- Why not visit

www.actionaid.org.uk/campaign/campaign-to-make-tax-fair/take-action-to-make-tax-fair-everywhere

and sign the online petition asking treasury minister David Gauke to make this a priority.

DEACONS’ THOUGHTS . . . .

One hundred and fifty three. Fish that is. A strange number and not one with any obvious symbolic significance though that hasn’t stopped biblical commentators from the earliest times trying to find one. For us it’s the type of detail that gives depth and authenticity to the resurrection account - after all John the evangelist himself tells us that he is a witness to these things, and that they are true.

Peter is once again singled out. He denied his Lord three times at the Passion and now he has to affirm his love for him three times. Understandably he is upset but this is part of Jesus’ ‘hand over.’ He wants to be assured that his ‘rock,’ his main man, is willing to look after and feed Jesus’ lambs and sheep, in other words His Church. Us.

Peter is willing. He is willing to go to his death to carry out this commission from the Lord. Not only Peter but several other disciples were willing to do the same. Surely that willingness is as good a piece of evidence for the absolute reality of the resurrection as there is. You would not be willing to die for something you knew to be an illusion. It happened.

Alleluia, Christ is risen.

THE TOWERS CONVENT SCHOOL ANTI-TRAFFICKING HUB

The Towers Convent School are holding an evening event on Monday 18th April from 18.00-20.00, which is designed to raise awareness about modern day slavery. The intention is that the event will spearhead other activities, which can be discussed on the evening itself.

There are several speakers lined up, who already work, in their different fields in supporting anti-trafficking. More information concerning these speakers is available on the website (www.thetowersconventschool.org). During the evening there will be a question and answer session plus an opportunity for attendees to speak to visiting speakers over refreshments.

Due to the content of some of the evening being of a sensitive nature the event is restricted to year ten (minimum) and upwards, who would be interested in attending.

They hope that the evening will be well attended and that future work, growing out of the venture, may help to make a difference.
