TRAFFIC PROTOCOL To continue the school year with all students’ safety at the forefront, we need to ask for your increased vigilance with all of our surrounding roads. We ask for your additional attention to the safety of our students, specifically in the areas in front of our school. We need everyone’s help to work for the safety of all our children. We have an ongoing concern with traffic congestion in front of the school during student drop-off and pick-up times. The disorderly flow of traffic can jeopardize the safety of students and all pedestrians. PLEASE HELP US HELP OUR CHILDREN:

1. During morning and afternoon peak times, follow the directions on the map illustrated below for approaching and leaving the school area;

• Use White Abbey Park to approach Japonica Rd. • Use Crosland Drive to leave the area. • Use the loop/cul-de-sac on White Abbey Park and wait in any of the spots where parking is allowed (maximum 30 Minutes). 2. The area in front of the main door of the school cannot be used as a drop-off OR a pick-up area. It is a school bus loading zone! Please observe the Bus zone signs from pole to pole. There are two signs which indicate the exact area of the bus loading zone! 3. The staff parking lot is NOT to be used to drop off or pick-up your child(ren). 4. Do not stop on the south side of Japonica Rd. It is a no stopping zone. It is unsafe for our children to run across the road. 5. The newly paved passage way to the west of the school near the new addition is an emergency Fire Access route. Pick up and drop off and Parking are strictly forbidden and any cars in the area will be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense. Parents can access the kindergarten area at the north end from the main school grounds in order to drop off and pick up their children. 6. Have a meeting place a short walking distance away, established in advance so your child knows where to look for you. 7. Please be courteous and do not block residential driveways, specifically on Japonica or White Abbey.

Please, do not double park, block residents’ driveways OR park in the staff parking lot before school or after school.

NB: Please be advised that there is AMPLE PARKING on Crosland Dr. and Alice Crescent.

January 2020

Dear OLW Parents,

We hope everyone enjoyed a peaceful and happy Christmas with family and friends.

Many thanks to all for our continued success with our major fundraising event. In December with the help of OLW

families, staff and students, we reached our second milestone of $8000 funds raised. In celebration of this achievement,

students enjoyed a free civvies day on December 20th. This fundraiser is now closed. Many thanks to all who

participated.

Looking forward to 2020 stay tuned for our upcoming Civvies Day fundraiser. This is a small fundraiser where students

can enjoy a series of civvies days for $2 each day. There will be some exciting prize baskets raffled off for those who

participate! Further information will be out in the New Year. Your participation in CSPC events is always appreciated.

Contributions to CSPC fundraising events support many items throughout the school year including French educational

resources, music and science programs, field trips, etc. Without your support we will be unable to fully support the

following activities such as Carnaval, Play Day and busing to name a few as we have done in the past. Thank you for your

continued support.

The next CSPC meeting is scheduled for January 22, 2020 at 6:30pm in the library. All parents are welcome to attend.

Lastly, OLW CSPC wishes you a happy and healthy New Year! Best wishes for the remainder of a safe winter break.

Ms. Aban’s Gr. 5 Class:

Students in Ms. Aban’s Gr. 5 class extended their learning from what originated as a math lesson focusing on the

classification of polygons and non-polygons to original artwork including a variety of polygons. Students classified a

variety of polygons according to specific characteristics, while applying their understanding of Key math terms

were taught in context, for example, "What is a Polygon?", a plane figure that has 3 or more sides, made up of line

segments in which two sides meet to form a vertex." The use of the Polygon song/video clip provided a quick

overview of the characteristics of polygons, piqued students' curiosity and assessed their prior knowledge.

Students applied their understanding of the number of sides, the number of angles during a Smart Board activity

and used the T-Chart to sort polygons and non-polygons (has open sides). Students were provided with appropriate

opportunities for independent practice of new skills and demonstration of the newly acquired knowledge. Students

enjoyed using the virtual and actual geoboards to complete riddle style construction of polygons based on the

teacher’s description and communication of specific attributes.

“In the interest of student health and school performance, the TCDSB is in support of students

being outdoors during recesses whenever possible. However, students will remain indoors during

inclement weather.

Students will remain indoors when the temperature, or the temperature in conjunction with the wind

speed, creates a wind chill factor that could possibly lead to frostbite.” Recommendations:

✓ Students should dress in layers of warm clothing with an outer layer that is wind resistant

✓ Wear a hat, mittens and scarf and face mask

✓ Wear slip resistant, insulated boots/footwear

✓ Occasionally, students get their pants and socks wet during recesses. During the colder,

wetter/slushy and snowy weather, please assist the school by providing your child with an extra pair of

pants, a top, and socks in the event of an emergency. School closures due to inclement weather will be

reported through the following vehicles:

VIRTUES OF THE MONTH

We would like to recognize all of the children and their exemplary modelling of the December 2019 virtue of Charity.

On December 19th, students from JK/SK to grade 8 were recognized as the Virtue of the Month recipients for September to

November (Hospitality, Gratitude and Peacemaking). Students from Grade 8 led the school in praying the Apostle’s Creed, at

times segueing into a modern translation of what each of those beliefs entail, as communicated by students in Mme. Makar’s

Grade 1 class, Mme. Suzan’s Grade 2 class, and Mme. Mari Berje’s Grade 3/4 class. This virtues assembly served as a significant

opportunity for the staff and students to reflect in their beliefs, as framed by the Creed.

Congratulations to the following students:

life altering exchange for both our students and the Senior residents of Le Centre D’Accueil Heritage,

through Christmas and Advent themed songs, the sharing of sweets and the interaction in French to

meet, comfort and understand a day in the life at the centre for the residents. Thank you also to Mme.

Thokoly, Mme. Natanek and Mme. O for preparing the voyage to the Centre this year!

RETURNING/NOT RETURNING TO OLW FOR 2020-2021:

Dear Parents/Guardians:

We thank you for choosing your community Catholic school for your child’s spiritual, academic, emotional and physical

development. We have a dedicated staff that makes every effort to meet the individual needs of all our students.

We trust that your child(ren) will continue their Catholic education in September 2020- with us. Our Mission states that,

are confident that we will be successful in achieving this goal.

As we start to plan for the next school year, we look to you for your continued cooperation. Please inform the school

regarding your child(ren)’s return to OLW or whether your child(ren) will not be returning by submitting the letter which

was sent prior to the Christmas Break by Monday, February 24, 2020.

Automated Speed Enforcement Systems to be Installed in School Zones

Page 39: OUR LADY OF WISDOM CATHOLIC SCHOOL

2019-2020 Rooted in Christ: We Believe,

The City of Toronto has announced the installation of Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) systems across the City of Toronto. ASE is intended to enhance road safety in Community Safety Zones near schools. The system captures any vehicle travelling in excess of the posted speed limit. This includes emergency vehicles and municipal fleet vehicles. Transportation services is installing 50 portable ASE systems near schools, and it is anticipated that they will rotate every three to six months within city wards. An educational campaign will be launched to inform drivers of the presence of an ASE system. During the initial period, the plate owner will simply be issued a warning letter to confirm that the vehicle was moving faster than the posted speed limit. No response to these warning letters is required.

The City expects to move to issuing tickets in spring 2020. No demerit points will be issued nor will the registered owner's driving record be impacted. For more information, please visit toronto.ca/ASE or contact the ASE team at [email protected].

Updates on Weather Related Cancellations or Closures Traffic congestion and varying road conditions can impact the flow of traffic in Toronto, and this is particularly true during

the winter months when snow and ice can be a major factor. The Toronto Student Transportation Group provides

information about school bus delays digitally through their website. Update on

delays: https://busplannerweb.torontoschoolbus.org/Cancellations.aspx. Parents are encouraged to subscribe to the

transportation portal to get real time information about any transportation issues:

https://busplannerweb.torontoschoolbus.org/Subscriptions/Login.aspx and to follow @TCDSB and @TOSchoolBus on

Twitter.
