Understanding My Value ToMy Church Community

    Laura Humphries, Parish Life Coordinator

A donation of $3 per CD is requested. Checks can be made payableto the parish. Donations will be used towards the purchase of additionalmaterials.

    CD OF THE WEEK

Jesus glanced up and saw wealthy people dropping theircontributions into the Temple treasury. Then he noticed aneedy widow drop in two small coins. He commented, “Ican tell you truly, this poor widow has contributed morethan all the rest. For they have all given their gifts out oftheir abundance, but she in her need has dropped in allthat she had to live on.” Lk 21:1-4

Here’s one way to understand what Jesus said about givingto others: At the end of time you’ll have only the things thatyou gave away. Everything you kept, you will no longer beable to keep. Life is meant to be a process of giving andsharing. At the end of time, we will be happy about everythingthat we ever gave away. The poor widow understood that.

Of course, I can’t give everything away. I need clothes anda house and a car. I like to have more than the bareessentials. But those are the things that I will lose. I willreap a hundredfold or everything I gave away – my precioustime to others who needed to be heard; the money, giftsand possessions I gave away or shared with others; thelove which I generously poured out even to people who didnot love me.

Jesus said that the way to fulfill yourself is to un-fill yourself. When Peter told that the disciples had given up everything, the Lord said that they would inherit everything, ahundredfold. When Jesus talked about the Last Judgment,he portrayed the Father as interested in what we gave ofourselves and our possessions to hungry people, to thirstypeople, to lonely people, to strangers.

The message is clear. At the end of time, the person withthe most toys probably won’t win. The poor widowunderstood that too. An excerpt from The Little BurgundyBook

This message basically says what we all know that wemust love others above the material things that we own;our toys cannot monopolize our life. We can share ourwealth and our time with others. Offering a listening earwhen someone is hurt, volunteering for Our House, HelpingHand, Habitat for Humanity, etc; working with children inPRE, VBS, CYM, volunteering at school and with youthactivities. Participating in parish activities like ParishCouncil, Adult Education, and in parish sponsored eventsand ministries. There are many civic organizations that needour help as well. Take an inventory of your day; is theretime for God, prayer and others in it? If not, maybe thereshould be an adjustment if, in fact, this statement is true:“When Jesus talked about the Last Judgment, he portrayedthe Father as interested in what we gave of ourselves andour possessions to hungry people, to thirsty people, tolonely people, to strangers.” It’s something to think about…

Letters havegone out to the parents of those who will be preparingfor this sacrament which is usually in the 8th grade. Ifyou did not receive a letter or if you have an 8th graderor high school student in need of Confirmation pleasecall the parish office at 663-8632. We will have aninformation meeting at 11 a.m. in the Parish Hall onMay 5th.

IS IT HARD FOR YOU TO HEARWHAT IS SAID AT MASS?

If you have a hearing impairment and have difficultyunderstanding what is said during Mass, you mightbenefit from using one of the assisted listening devices(ALDs) located in the sacristy. These devices deliverthe speaker’s voice through an earphone, makingreduced audibility from distance and background noiseless of a problem. Those who have hearing aids witha telecoil can use one of the neckloops that the parishnow offers. Simply disconnect the earphone from theALD, plug in the neckloop, place the neckloop aroundyour neck like a necklace, and switch your hearingaids to t-coil mode. With a neckloop, sound is delivereddirectly through both of your hearing aids instead ofthrough the headphone, and this can result in bettersound quality and increased understanding. If youare unsure if your hearing aid has a telecoil or areunsure how to access the t-coil mode, contact youraudiologist. When returning the device to the sacristy, please remove the loop, return it to the drawer, andconnect the earphone back for the next user.
