T “F F ” C . Your support is necessary to complete this essen al repair. We already have

$203,039 in pledges to date and over half of that has already been fulfilled. We are well on our way to mee ng our goal of $250,000. For those who have already contributed, thank you. If you have already contributed by making a pledge please complete the form on page 8 in order to reserve your commemora ve brick for the Holy Angels Walkway of Remembrance.

T , . The work on the first phase of the project has begun. This Sunday as you arrive for Mass, you will likely no ce what an

enormous project that this is. Thanks to your generosity, we have made a good start on bringing this once in two and a half genera ons projects to comple on. I ask that you please consider making a pledge if you have not already done so.

W B D T L F H A W R . We are moving ahead with these

projects and I thank you for your support. Our goal of $250,000 is ambi ous but we are well on our way to mee ng and surpassing that goal! Please be a part of this campaign in order to provide a solid founda on for our parish’s financial future. Anyone who contributes any amount during this phase of the campaign will be able to designate an inscribed brick for our Walkway of Remembrance. I believe that the Memorial will expand over me and serve as a tribute to loved ones and most of all become a sign of our gra tude to God for the gi of Angels who guide us. When the campaign concludes, each brick will require an $800.00 contribu on that may be sa sfied over eight months. Please consider being a part of this important campaign now. So many of our parish family have become a part of this ambi ous project and I ask you to become involved as well.

D B T C . Repairs are underway to the Blanche Timm Center so that it will be ready for

the opening of the Banyan School Year. While insurance will pick up about $33,000 we are responsible for $5,600.

I . Around the same me as the emergency repairs on the school building three years ago, I had hoped to be able to repair our parking lot. Regre ably, the cost of the es mates I obtained in 2015 has risen between 10%-15%. It will never get any cheaper to repair the parking lot – the cost, now, is well over $225,000.

There was a minor repair made to the parking lot for around $6,000 two years ago to address the most damaged part. I am embarrassed to tell you that was a bad decision on my part. T . The area near the elevator and the chapel now becomes like a lake when it rains and floods in the winter and freezes over. It is not safe.

But as vital as safety is, as essen al as the Banyan School and the rental of our property is to our future, that first impression that is made when people come to our parish is not incidental. Repairing a parking lot isn’t simply a construc on issue. I , .

A parking lot that has holes, cracks and is unsafe does not present a welcoming message to parishioners and visitors alike. We want and need our facili es to be an expression of happiness and joy and welcome to that family new to the neighborhood who is looking for a Church to join. B ,

C . W . Now, we need to address that final exterior piece – our parking lot.

With your help, the first impression that everyone will get the moment they pull into our Church grounds is that Our Lady of the Holy Angels is a thriving, ac ve and welcoming Catholic faith community and the jewel of Li le Falls and star of faith in the Diocese of Paterson that we know it is.

You will recall that when we prepared to renovate the church it was said, “It will never work.” You will remember that before we built the elevator, it was said, “Impossible.” Look around at this building. Look at that elevator – how many would find it impossible to get into this church building without it. You made it happen. We will meet this challenge as well.

I have no doubt that we will make this happen. No one can do everything but everyone can do something. I

T -S S O T “O , O L , T ”

Our readings for this Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time point us toward living in a spirit of gra tude for God’s guidance in our lives and seeking ever more openness to the Holy Spirit who guides us towards the fullness of life. In our first reading from the Book of Deuteronomy, Moses exhorts the people to keep the law of the LORD faithfully so that they will be able to make wise decisions and choose the path that leads to fidelity to the covenant rela onship that God has established with his chosen people. Moses tells the people that it is for their own benefit to observe the L ’ law: “. . . so that you may live, and may enter in and take possession of the land which the L , the God of your fathers, is giving you” (Deuteronomy 4:1). The L had faithfully led his people out of slavery in Egypt, he gave them freedom from the heavy burden of subjuga on that they had endured and now the L gives his people the freedom that comes from living in las ng friendship with him.

In a recent daily medita on for Mass, our Holy Father, Pope Francis, noted:

We can pray well and say ‘Father’ to God only if our heart is at peace with others, with our brothers and sisters.’ To one who jus fies herself saying: ‘this person did this to me, this one did this and that to me...,’ there is only one response: ‘forgive, forgive as He will forgive you!’ And ‘thus the weakness we have — with the help of God in prayer — becomes strength, for forgiveness is a great strength: one needs to be strong in order to forgive, but this strength is a grace that we have to receive from the Lord because we are weak.’

The L invites us into communion, friendship, with him and calls us to live in a way that gives us true freedom. The L means to assure freedom for his people by giving them his own law – a law that he has designed and established with love and with the good of his people in mind – observing his law they would truly be a light to the na ons and draw others to the salva on and life that God promises. The law that God gives his people is not intended as a burden or a restric on but as a means to have access to the divine life, that communion with God – friendship that God promises.

Our second reading from the Le er of James commends us to put the gi s that we have received through God’s word of truth into ac on: “Humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you and is able to save your souls. Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deluding yourselves” (James 1:21b-22). We are called to live according to the example of self-giving love that the Father has revealed to us through his own Son, Jesus Christ and we do this through the power of the Holy Spirit who dwells in our

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 5)

hearts. God con nually recreates and renews us with the gi s of the Holy Spirit if we open our hearts to the Spirit: “All good giving and every perfect gi is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no altera on or shadow caused by change. He willed to give us birth by the word of truth that we may be a kind of first-fruits of his creatures” (James 1:17-18). When we welcome God’s word into our lives, the living Word of God, Jesus Christ, then we have access to divine life, to par cipa on in God’s own life. The power of God’s law and God’s living Word impacts who we are on the inside and leads us to use our faith as the mo va ng factor for the way that we live, the way that we respond to others, and the means by which we make good, other-centered, decisions.

In our gospel reading from Saint Mark, Jesus is once again the subject of the ire of the Pharisees. The Pharisees no ce that the disciples of Jesus do not observe the ritual washings associated with taking a meal and the Pharisees seem to be horrified by this lack of respect for a ritual prescrip on of the law: “Why do your disciples not follow the tradi on of the elders but instead eat a meal with unclean hands” (Mark 7:5). The ques on of the Pharisees, in this case, seems a very reasonable one – a er all, shouldn’t one wash one’s hands before ea ng? Of course. Much to the relief of parents everywhere, Jesus is not condemning hand-washing at dinner me. Rather, the Lord Jesus is gently chas sing the Pharisees, and by design, for their over emphasis on ceremonial washing – a kind of ritual purifica on – that provides an expedient means to avoid self-examina on of their own purity of heart and their goodness of inten on. Some mes we look at others and make rash judgments about how holy they might be, how reverent they really are, or how much their faith means to them. That is unfortunate when it leads to an a tude of being judgmental.

We are judged by our external ac ons and we are responsible for our own behavior and the consequences that flow from it but external appearances are never enough in order for others to make a judgment about who we are or what our mo va ons are. Ul mately, we need to make our decisions based upon God’s life giving law, God’s guidance; when we do that our outward comportment and interior life will likely find harmony. No one of us is perfect and the judgment of our life and our hearts belong to God who knows all and sees all. That does not absolve us from living responsibly in this life – it actually calls us to a higher standard – the con nual renewal of our resolve to orient our hearts towards God and God’s law.

On August 28th we celebrated the Feast of Saint Augus ne who famously wrote in his Confessions: “Our hearts are restless O Lord un l they rest in thee.” Saint Augus ne expresses what we know in our hearts – it is our longing for God and friendship with God that makes us whole. Of Saint Augus ne and his search for God, Benedict XVI noted:

As for Augus ne, his whole life was a passionate search for the truth. In the end, not without a long inner torment, he found in Christ the ul mate and full meaning of his own life and of the whole of human history. In adolescence, a racted by earthly beauty, he ‘flung himself’ upon it - as he himself confides (cf. Confessions, 10, 27-38) - with selfish and possessive behavior that caused his pious mother great pain.

But through a toilsome journey and thanks also to her prayers, Augus ne became always more open to the fullness of truth and love un l his conversion, which happened in Milan under the guidance of the Bishop, St Ambrose.

He thus remained the model of the journey towards God, supreme Truth and supreme Good. ‘Late have I loved you,’ he wrote in the famous book of the Confessions, ‘beauty, ever ancient and ever new, late have I loved you. You were within me and I was outside of you, and it was there that I sought you.... You were with me and I was not with you.... You called, you cried out, you pierced my deafness. You shone, you struck me down, and you healed my blindness.’

Augus ne’s search for God, his longing for God, made his life complete. It took him awhile to get to where he was meant to be but all he had experienced on his journey, not all of it good, made him more open to the power of God because he recognized his need for God and his u er dependence on a need for friendship with the Lord Jesus. God has given us all we need to have access to his life and to live in his light. If we choose to ignore God’s law our path to peace and fullness and life will likely be a rocky, if not hazardous, journey. Observing God’s law does not mean that we always get it right, or that we somehow will reach the zenith of human perfec on – what it does mean is that we will always be on the path that leads to God because we have made the decision that there is no life or peace of heart without trying to live in friendship with God. That longing for God’s presence and that wish for God’s guidance is always something to be grateful for – that longing for God is itself a gi and means for God to guide us.

It is so hard to believe. The summer is quickly drawing to a close. A very happy and res ul, safe, Labor Day Weekend to all – God bless all of the young people who are preparing to return to school – we pray that the Holy Spirit will guide you and grant you the gi of wisdom in the year ahead and always.

R S E M 6:30 E S M 7:00 S

I am hesitant to mul ply Masses simply for the sake of having more Masses. However, as pastor, I do want to make the availability of the celebra on of the Eucharist for as many as possible. Therefore, the Mass in Spanish will be celebrated on Saturday evenings at 7:00 and Mass in English has returned to Sunday evenings at 6:30. Thank you for your pa ence with this change to our Mass schedule.

The summer is quickly passing by. As we look forward to the autumn, a gentle reminder to parents to register their children for the Faith Forma on year that begins in September. The deadline has already passed for registra on but you may s ll register if you s ll wish to do so. If you have not already done so, please register your sons and daughters for our Fall Faith Forma on Programs. Registra on packets are available at the parish office. In order to adequately plan and prepare for our Fall Programs, it is very important that all students are registered as soon as possible. Thank you for giving us the privilege in assis ng you in handing on the faith to your children.

One of the most vital ministries in our parish, or any parish, is that of catechist. In order for our faith forma on program to work we are in need of catechists to help us in this vital work of handing on the faith to the young people of our parish. We are in need of more catechists so that our faith forma on program con nues to be effec ve. Please think about serving as a catechist. You don’t need to be an expert teacher; all that you need is a love for the faith and the Lord. Please contact Ms. Trish Filiaci if you would be able to give the gi of your service to the young people of our parish in this important ministry. If you are able to serve as a catechist please know that you will be given assistance to help in this work and that there are many to guide you along the way. Many Catholics never completed the process of their full ini a on into the Church by receiving the Sacrament of Confirma on. If you are an adult bap zed Catholic and have not been confirmed but would like to be, please contact me at the parish office or via e-mail and we can talk about the program that will begin in the fall that will lead to receiving the gi s of the Holy Spirit in Confirma on at Easter.

Thank you for your never failing generosity in support of our parish. Please remember that during the summer months we s ll con nue to rely on your support to meet our budget for the fiscal year. You are so generous but the decrease in summer collec ons takes a heavy toll. We are just three weeks into the new fiscal year and already more than ten thousand dollars short in what is budgeted. Please don’t forget your parish! Thank you and God bless you for your generosity.

HELP THE HOMELESS His sandals were what drew us to him. “A nun gave them to me,” he told us. His feet looked as if he’d walked a thousand miles. His socks were so tattered and torn that all his toes were exposed. And then it hit us. It was Him. Christ among us. Mychal’s Message is accepting donations in its 17th annual distribution of new underwear and socks to the homeless. A donation of $9.11 will provide a package of “Blessed Bloomers” to a homeless man or woman living on the street. Tax-deductible donations can be mailed to Mychal’s Message, P.O. Box 6404, Lancaster PA 17607, made online at www.mychalsmessage.org or via Facebook (Mychal’s Message). “Blessed Bloomers” will be given away beginning September 11th (in honor of the anniversary of 9/11) and continue through Christmas. For more information, contact Agnes Czaplinski 973-942-7167.
