Prayer of Pope Francis for Protection and Help

O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope.

We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm.

You…know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection. Amen.

Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of those of us who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

Online Giving Will Help Sustain Our Church

Meeting your giving goal will help support our church’s many ministries dedicated to strengthening our church’s community and community at large.

Online Giving allows you to make donations, payments and pledges via your smart device or computer to our church. Search the App Stores for Online Giving or go to www.OLGapp.com and register with our parish.

Set up your gift today or consider an additional gift via our website on your smart device. Visit www.holyangelsrc.org and click on the “Donate” tab to make a one-time or recurring donation.

For parishioners who want to avoid credit card and bank transaction fees, we strongly encourage the free bank bill-payment services that many local banks offer. For example, both Bank of America and Chase offer Bill Pay services that allow the account owner to set up a weekly automatic payment via check in a set amount to the parish. This paper check is then mailed by the bank to the parish on the date the account holder sets. This works very well and is easy for most parishioners to set up and use.

My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Msgr. T. Mark Condon

T H W , S T , E . There have been other mes when we have been limited in our movement in Easter. Not to this degree, of course, but the experience is not without precedent.

M 29, 1970 E S . I was six years old and woke up ready to break into my Easter basket and get ready for a big day. Those were the days when most boys got ou i ed with new suits and girls with new dresses and even hats some mes, all in prepara on for Easter Sunday Mass and dinner. Those clothes were outgrown by June. Those new clothes told us that this was a special day. Even as kids we no ced the sacrifices of our parents was something special and we also knew that they made it a priority to make it possible for us to go shopping at Jacobs or Meyer Brothers in Paterson; Willowbrook Mall had just opened in 1969 and s ll not complete and so the city is where you went for shopping. At any rate, my blue suit, with a vest, was not going to be worn on Easter Sunday. The Easter basket was there, of course, when I woke up on Easter Sunday but it was snowing and it would snow for much of the day. We were homebound.

T E because most people were homebound and there was only a telephone to keep us connected but it turned out to be a happy day anyway. The gi of faith and family, the joy of Easter can’t be broken by events beyond our control. Easter, in fact, is about giving us joy and hope in the midst of turmoil and fear. This year we need to hold close to our faith and we can always be confident in God’s closeness to us.

I F to the degree that it is possible and to follow the liturgies that will be broadcast from the Va can and from other places all over the world. I will live stream to the degree possible. I am planning to celebrate the central liturgies via live stream. Keep checking Facebook for the mes.

T ; the Bishop has asked that palm be blessed at some later date. I have, in fact, cancelled delivery of the palm because it is an expense that we can do without if it is going to go to waste and dry out. Please hold onto the blessed palm from last year. If there comes a

me when we are given permission to bless and distribute palm, I will look to see where we might obtain some for blessing and distribu on.

W , I ask you to please use the guide below as a medita on and a source on encouragement during Holy Week. While we will not be in the same physical loca on, we will be united in prayer and in the bonds of faith, hope, and love that can never be broken.

A L H W M G

O L L . Lent will officially conclude on Holy Thursday when we begin the Sacred Triduum. The days of Lent have all been leading up to the celebra on of the Triduum, the three days when we focus intently on the mystery of our salva on won for us by the saving passion, death and resurrec on of Jesus Christ. But this Sunday we begin Holy Week with the observance of Passion, Palm Sunday. Each year we gather to hear the Passion proclaimed on this day and we hold alo palm branches with which we acclaim Christ as our Redeemer. Just as the Lord asked his disciples at the hour of his agony in the garden, he asks us to draw close to him: “Remain here and keep watch with me” (Ma hew 26:38). This Holy Week can be a me of renewal for our faith and a hope that we become ever closer to the Lord in friendship.

A M P S , the priest addresses these words to the assembly: “Today we gather to herald with the whole Church the beginning of the celebra on of the Lord’s

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 3)

Paschal Mystery, that is to say, of his Passion and Resurrec on. For it was to accomplish this mystery that he entered his own city of Jerusalem. T , , let us commemorate the Lord’s entry into the city for our salva on, following in his footsteps, so that, being made by his grace partakers of the Cross, we have a share also in his resurrec on and life.” With the celebra on of Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion we cross the threshold and enter the most sacred me in the Chris an Year: Holy Week; these are seven days that commemorate the central mysteries of our faith in Jesus Christ and give us a privileged me of grace to accompany the Lord as he opens for us the gates of salva on. We will follow with devo on from our homes and our closeness to the Lord will be very vivid to us this year as we understand our complete dependence upon him.

T J C won for us by his passion, death, and resurrec on from the dead; these are the days to seek closer friendship with the Lord and to recognize our need to be connected to Christ’s body, the Church. Our first reading for the Mass of Palm Sunday is from the Prophet Isaiah; the prophet reflects upon his God given voca on: “Morning a er morning he opens my ear that I may hear; and I have not rebelled, have not turned back” (Isaiah 50:4-5). As we come towards the end of Lent we are reminded that our journey towards conversion does not end with Lent. Rather, the work of being converted to the Lord, pu ng aside selfishness and self-centeredness, living for others, and in fidelity to the Gospel requires a willingness to open our hearts “morning a er morning” to hear the voice of God, le ng go of those things that hinder our growth in rela onship with God and finding our joy in the light of the Risen Christ.

D H W , S T – Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday – the liturgies celebrated will touch you and speak to your heart; the Lord has a word of grace to speak to us as individuals and as a community. It is a privilege to be able to take part in the liturgies of Holy Week and I encourage you to join with our community in praising God for the gi of salva on during this special

me. Life is busy, many concerns press in us, especially when so much of our area has been inundated by floods and all of the anxiety and frustra on that goes along with them. The celebra ons of Holy Week are an opportunity to step back from the ordinary events of our lives, important as they are in their own right, to reflect upon the path that we walk with the Lord Jesus each day.

O P S , in the presence of the Lord among us: “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to come! Hosanna in the highest!” (Mark 11:9). As we enter into Holy Week with the celebra on of Palm Sunday we are mindful of the king whom we follow. Jesus is not an earthly king who clings to wealth, power, and posi on. Jesus is the King who manifests his true glory by laying down his life for sinners on the wood of the cross. Through his blood we are washed clean of our sins; through the blood and water that flow from his side the sacramental life of the Church is given life and we are all able to have confidence in the promise of eternal life with the Lord.

O H T E M L ’ S we find ourselves in the upper room with the Lord and his disciples, we reverence the gi of the Eucharist, thank God for the gi of the priesthood, and recommit ourselves to be faithful servants of the one who washes the feet of his disciples and who encourages us by example to follow this example of humble, selfless service. Saint John’s Gospel tells us that the Lord gave this as a command: “If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that what I have done for you, you should also do” (John 13:14-15). The Eucharist strengthens us in our call to be servants of the Lord Jesus and one another.

O G F L P L we are awed by the supreme sacrifice of Christ in laying down his life for our sins. The beau ful language of the Prophet Isaiah turns our minds eye to the suffering servant who died to make us whole: “Yet it was our infirmi es that he bore, our sufferings that he endured, while we thought of him as stricken, as one smi en by God and afflicted. But he was pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins; upon him was the chas sement that makes us whole, by his stripes we were healed” (Isaiah 53:4-5). The Suffering Servant, Jesus Christ, calls us to turn away from sin, to embrace repentance and to make of ourselves an offering of our lives to God.

April 5, 2020 - Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion

O H S , I R S , we are delivered from the slavery of sin and take our places as God’s children, redeemed and sanc fied by the blood of the lamb. We can sing with the Israelites of long ago: “My strength and my courage is the Lord, and he has been my savior. He is my God, I praise him; the God of my father, I extol him” (Exodus 15:2). These are very special days and celebra ons, please join us. Giving your me to the Lord, the most precious gi that we have, will help to renew your hearts and make you joyful in the celebra on of Easter morning. These celebra ons help us to view our lives in the light of the risen Christ who gives us the gi of eternal life.

I M , H F , P F , spoke of remaining with Christ on the journey of faith; the Va can News Service provides this summary of the Holy Father’s medita on:

Here, then, is ‘the reality of man: we are faced with good and evil — the reality of God — God-made-Christ — and the third human reality, the reality of the journey.’ The ques on to ask then is, “‘how do we go, which road do we take?’” The Pope answered by referring to Jesus’ own words: ‘If any man would come a er me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.’ Because, the Pope affirmed, ‘the reality of the journey is that of Christ: following Christ, doing the will of the Father, as he did, by taking up the daily crosses and denying ourself in order to follow Christ.’ This means ‘not doing what I want, but what Jesus wants: following Jesus.’ And Jesus says ‘that on this path we lose our life so as to regain it a erwards; it is a con nuous loss of life, the loss of “doing what I want”, the loss of material comforts, of always being on the path of Jesus, who was in service to others, to the adora on of God: that is the just path.’

T H F in keeping the Chris an life vital and effec ve. This Holy Week is a me of intense prayer. It is a me for us, as much as possible, to keep watch with the Lord, to listen to his voice, and recommit ourselves to following him. Please don’t let the opportunity to walk with the Lord Jesus during the Sacred Triduum, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday pass by without taking advantage of God’s word and sacrament that is celebrated in the liturgy. Please take part in the liturgies of Holy Week. I know that you will be moved by them and your faith will be strengthened by the experience. Our Holy Week and Easter Schedule may be found on the front of the bulle n. The liturgies of Holy Week, especially the liturgies of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday evening, the liturgy of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday, and the Great Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night are the most beau ful liturgies of the church year. I know that if you take part in one or all of these liturgies you will never experience Holy Week and Easter in the same way again. These liturgies help us to really understand what we mean when we proclaim in every Eucharist, the “Mystery of faith.” The liturgies of the Sacred Triduum help us to open our hearts to the gi of God’s life that is given to us as a gi through the saving passion, death, and resurrec on from the dead of Jesus Christ our Lord. What gi , grace, and joy this week is for all of us and a precious opportunity for the Lord to speak to our hearts.

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 5)

regarding the observance of Holy Week, the Paschal Triduum, and Easter for the year 2020 in the local church entrusted to his apostolic care.

In keeping with the provisions of the aforemen oned decree and as moderator of liturgical life among the faithful entrusted to my care (Code of Canon Law: c. 835 §1) I make the following provisions for all parishes and ins tu ons of the Diocese of Paterson:

1. The date of Easter is the linchpin of the en re liturgical year and is declared immovable by the Apostolic See through mandate of the Supreme Pon ff. The date of Easter remains April 12, 2020.

2. The Chrism Mass is postponed to date following Easter. The announcement of the date of the celebra on will be given at a later date. The Sacred Chrism and Holy Oils consecrated and blessed last year remain for the administra on of the sacraments. The administra on sacraments remain completely valid and licit with the use of the Sacred Chrism and Holy Oils consecrated and blessed last year.

3. Holy Week, the Paschal Triduum, and Easter will be celebrated without the physical par cipa on of the faithful.

4. To the degree that they are able, parishes are to live stream the liturgical celebra ons of the Holy Week and Easter to the faithful without the physical presence of the faithful.

5. Liturgical celebra ons are to be live streamed and not recorded so that the faithful may prayerfully unite themselves from their homes with the sacred ac on taking parish in the parish church or chapel.

Further specific norms regarding individual celebra ons:

1. Passion (Palm) Sunday: Palm is not to be blessed for distribu on at this me; it will be blessed and distributed at a later me. The third form for the Entrance, i.e., The Simple Entrance as designated in the Roman Missal is to be used. All forms of the procession are suspended but the designated an phon in the form of the Simple Entrance may be used.

2. Holy Thursday: The priests of the parish may celebrate the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper at any hour of the day and in any suitable place without people. The washing of feet, already op onal, is omi ed in every celebra on this year. The procession to the place of adora on is omi ed and the Blessed Sacrament is not available for adora on.

It is appropriate for the parish priest to spend some me before the Blessed Sacrament following the Mass in prayer for the people of his parish. The parish church should not be kept open on the evening of Holy Thursday to prevent the gathering of large crowds.

3. Priests unable to celebrate Mass on Holy Thursday should not fail to offer the Vespers of the day from the Liturgy of the Hours.

4. Good Friday: To the measure that it is possible, the parish priest should celebrate the Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion without people present. There is no venera on of the cross by the people. A special inten on for the sick, the dead, and those who feel lost or dismayed is to be added to the Universal Prayer. The parish church should not be kept open on Good Friday to prevent the gathering of large crowds.

5. The Easter Vigil: Where there is a real possibility of doing so, determined by the pastor responsible, the Easter Vigil is celebrated in the parish church. The Solemn Beginning of the Vigil or Lucenarium is omi ed. The Paschal Candle is simply lit and the Easter Proclama on (Exsultet) follows. The Liturgy of the Word then takes place. For the Bap smal Liturgy only the Renewal of Bap sm Promises is necessary. The font is not blessed.

6. All expressions of popular piety and processions, i.e., live Sta ons of the Cross, processions with the

Sorrowful Mother or other types of processions are suspended. Such expressions of piety may be moved to later dates which will be announced at an appropriate me.

7. Easter food is not blessed at the parish or any other public se ng. The faithful may be referred to an adapta on made by the pastor and distributed via the internet of the Order for the Blessing of Food for the First Meal of Easter in the Book of Blessings.

8. The Mass of Easter Day may be celebrated and the faithful joined spiritually with the liturgical ac on through live stream.

A Plenary Indulgence

The Apostolic Peniten ary, through the authority of the Supreme Pon ff, has granted a Plenary Indulgence to all of those who are suffering from the coronavirus or those who are caring from those who are ill, and addi onally to all those subject quaran ne during this me of grave difficulty. In order to obtain the Indulgence, which is the remission before God of guilt for sins already forgiven, the faithful are to observe the devo ons and disposi on outlined in the decree:

The Plenary Indulgence is granted to the faithful suffering from Coronavirus, who are subject to quaran ne by order of the health authority in hospitals or in their own homes if, with a spirit detached from any sin, they unite spiritually through the media to the celebra on of Holy Mass, the recita on of the Holy Rosary, to the pious prac ce of the Way of the Cross or other forms of devo on, or if at least they will recite the Creed, the Lord's Prayer and a pious invoca on to the Blessed Virgin Mary, offering this trial in a spirit of faith in God and charity towards their brothers and sisters, with the will to fulfil the usual condi ons (sacramental confession, Eucharis c communion and prayer according to the Holy Father's inten ons), as soon as possible.

Health care workers, family members and all those who, following the example of the Good Samaritan, exposing themselves to the risk of contagion, care for the sick of Coronavirus according to the words of the divine Redeemer: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13), will obtain the same gi of the Plenary Indulgence under the same condi ons.

The Holy Father has provided this Plenary Indulgence in order for the suffering and those who selflessly labor in the care of the sick are united ever more closely with Christ the healer and reliant on the all-powerful and never failing mercy of God.

All to the contrary notwithstanding. Given this 21st day of March, 2020.

Most Reverend Arthur J. Serratelli, S.T.D., S.S.L., D.D. Bishop of Paterson

I do not like to turn to subjects that will only add to your concerns as we pass through this dark valley. I ask however, that you please do as much as you are able to in maintaining your generous support of our parish.

In order for us to maintain at least a minimal staff, and keep the lights on, we require a weekly income. You can make contribu ons through your own bank through their bill pay op ons, through online giving at www.OLGapp.com, or through our parish website: www.holyangelsrc.org. Thank you for your generosity.

Financial concerns are one concern but certainly not the most important or the only one. The first concern is always you and your families. Please know that during these days I remember you and your families each day at private Mass. It is a reassuring to celebrate Mass, even when no other person is present, because in the confines of the quiet church, the song of the angels reverberates in the silence and is our promise our deliverance from

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 7)

these hardships: “Holy, holy, holy Lord God of host. Heaven and earth are full of your glory.” Our parish dedicated to the Our Lady of the Holy Angels relies on the powerful intercession of our Blessed Mother and her band of angels to see us through this storm. I have no doubt that she will and that the angels will guide our steps.

I pray that this me of constant apprehension and confusion will soon pass. In the mean me, we rely upon the protec on of the angels, and I commend to the care of the Blessed Virgin Mary as I ask God’s blessing upon you and your families.

God bless you and your families.
