Ron TODAY’S READINGS: The parable of the murderous tenants describes a radical crisis in the life of the Messiah and in the history of salvation. Having spoken tirelessly to those responsible for the vineyard of Israel, God finally appeals to them through his Son. With unequalled authority, Jesus announces the approach of the harvest of the last times. Earth must yield its fruit. The people of God must welcome their Messiah! But the children are no better than their ancestors. Just as the latter rejected the just one and the prophets, so also the scribes and Pharisees prepare to murder the heir to God’s beloved vineyard. The people of the promise run the risk of rejecting their election, of breaking the covenant through which God’s plan was to be realized. Jesus uses this parable as a clear proclamation of his death. He came into the world and his own people did not receive him. They finally rejected the Son and heir and even crucified him outside the city. The parable ends with a prophetic threat: the Church of the risen One will soon take up the mission once laid upon Israel. Matthew expresses the conviction that this new people will bring the vineyard to fruit. Yet these new tenants must not in their turn disappoint the Lord who never ceases to demand the fruit of his vineyard. We cannot remind ourselves enough that the Church is built on the stone that was rejected. Called together by this outcast, we must open ourselves to the banished of this world and make choices which may be punished by death outside the walls. If not, then “the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will yield a rich harvest.” The prophets Jeremiah and Ezekiel introduced a new insight. Vatican Statement on end-of-life care, condemning euthanasia.

As we all know, euthanasia is legal in Canada. As Catholics we also know that to assist in the suicide of a person is immoral and in fact, is intrinsically evil.

The Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) has recently issued a statement strongly reaffirming the Church’s ban on euthanasia as “an intrinsically evil act in every circumstance.” So if it wasn’t clear to you before – there it is! “An intrinsically evil act in every circumstance.”

As well, anyone who cooperates in the practice is guilty as well, even those who defend legalization.

“Euthanasia, the CDF states plainly, “is an act of homicide that no end can justify and that does not tolerate any form of complicity or active or passive collaboration. Those who approve laws of euthanasia and assisted suicide, therefore, become accomplices of a grave sin that others will execute. They are also guilty of scandal because by such laws they contribute to the distortion of conscience, even among the faithful.” Laws that allow for assisted suicide “strike at the foundation of the legal order”, not to mention the moral order of society.

The CDF has reacted in response to a “new drive for legal acceptance of physician assisted suicide, particularly in European nations.” We might add that, here in Canada, there is a drive to liberalize euthanasia even more, loosening the restrictions on it and making it available to people with mental health issues and others that are not imminently dying. The conscience rights of medical personnel are being quashed and doctors are being ordered to get on the euthanasia program or change professions.

The Vatican statement is addressed not merely to the issue of euthanasia, but to the broader issue of “the care of persons in the critical and terminal phases of life.” The statement acknowledges: “It is widely recognized that a moral and practical clarification regarding care of these persons is needed.”

End of life issues can be extremely complex in this day and age in which medical knowledge, skills and technology are keeping us alive much longer. This means as care givers to our parents or to our spouses and other loved ones, that we are faced with multiple decisions which often have no clear answer. We, as Catholics need to know the parameters that calls for good judgement on these matters In cases of terminal illness, the Vatican statement says: The impossibility of a cure where death is imminent does not entail the cessation of medical and nursing activity. Responsible communication with the terminally ill person should make it clear that care will be provided until the very end: “to cure if possible, always to care.”

Because of the increasing acceptance of euthanasia in the secular world, and pressure for health-care personnel to conform, the Vatican statement encourages Catholic institutions and communities to work for the protection of the conscience rights of health-care workers.

And each of us has a responsibility to inform ourselves so that we can make the best possible decisions when the time comes.
