Liturgy Notes At the Celebration of the Eucharist today, we again hear a theme that was running the weekends of September 22nd & 29th, of the “Lord hearing the cry of the poor”. This week it is contained in the Responsorial Psalm, which is Psalm 34. For the congregational response, (with the exception of the 8o’clock) we will use the familiar refrain and verses from John Fo-ley’s “The Cry of the Poor” found at the hymn number 620 in Break-ing Bread. The first three (3) verses are a close match to the text on page 225, so, those will be used today. The motet at the 10 AM Choral Eucharist “O God, Be Merciful to Me” by Renaissance composer Orlando di Lasso (1582-1594) has been selected from a passage we hear in the Holy Gospel echoing the same words ‘O God; be merciful to me a sinner.’ This Belgium/Dutch composer cleverly combined the verses to Psalm 57 to make in coincide with this Old French tune. The style of the coral writing in this composition is referred to as polyphonic in which the music lines of the soprano, alto, tenor and bass intertwine and weave throughout. There is one brief section in the middle that contains a chordal con-text, then quickly resumes to the interesting, melodic theme. As mentioned several weeks back, the hymn we sing at the Presenta-tion of the Gifts, “Stand By Me” is based on a poem by Charles A. Tindley (1851-1933). This powerful, but comforting text is a plea asking God, that whatever trials and tribulations come our way, to stand by us and lift us up from the dangers and turmoil that this life

can bring us. ~Ray Murphy, Music Director

Family Liturgy NEXT Weekend First Weekend of each Month at the 10: 00 AM Mass

Children are invited to sit on the rug in the Homily of the Mass. If any child would like to do one of the Read-ings at this Mass please contact Sister Ann 203-287-9017

Coordinator of Religious Education Betsy Fitzsimmons 203-287-0316 As a parent, you are the primary catechist for your children and family. Enjoy these activities at home to further your reflection on this Sunday's readings. • Discuss with your child what prayer means to you. Explain that God always hears our prayers and

always takes care of our needs. Teach a brief prayer to your child to be used in the morning and evening. Write the prayer on an index card and have your child use crayons or markers to design the bor-der. Have your child keep the card as a reminder to pray at different times during the day. • Use the Bible to help your family recognize that praying with Scripture is very important to prayer life. Have each family member take a turn reading a Scripture passage each evening. Discuss how each passage chosen is meaningful to your family. • Take turns leading the family meal prayer, allowing each person a chance to make up a prayer or say the usual prayer alone. At the end of the prayer, ask family members to add any petitions they may have to offer.

Talking about God isn’t about imposing beliefs, but rather about sharing the joy of faith. ~ Pope Francis

All Saints Day THIS Friday, November 1st

Holy Day of Obligation Mass Schedule: 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM

November is called the month of All Souls. More recently it has been called the Commemoration of All the Faithful Depart-ed. November 2nd, All Souls Day, dovetails with November 1st, the feast of All Saints. The saints, our models of Christian living, are one with God in heaven. All the faithful departed

are those who have died with hope and trust in a loving God who calls us to a greater growth and development, even beyond death. These November feasts vividly remind us of the rich reali-ty known as the “communion of saints.” This belief stresses the strong affirmation that the Church is always one in Christ. Death does not sever any of the bonds that unite us in Christ. That is why it is fitting practice to pray for the de-ceased...and ask them to pray for us. Just as we do that for each other when we are alive, so, too, do we continue that bond and concern for each other even beyond death.

When someone we love dies we enter into a time of grieving. A bereavement support group provides the opportunity to share with others who are also grieving. Grieving within a small group allows participants to receive support, to share experiences, to listen and to speak to others during a difficult time. At Our Lady of Mount Carmel the group will be facilitated by parish-ioners who are certified bereavement support facilita-tors. The group will run for eight weeks on Tuesday

evenings from 7pm - 8:30pm beginning October 22 through Decem-ber 10th. People of any faith or those with no faith are welcome. We ask that you wait for about three months before joining a group. For any questions and to register please call Kathy at 203 287-1159 .

SOCIAL JUSTICE MEETING THIS Tuesday, October 29th in the CHURCH HALL MEETING ROOM at 7:00 PM

CATHOLIC CHURCH ANNULMENTS

Many Catholics have asked the following questions about the Church’s position on divorce, annulments, and marriage:

• “Can a divorced person receive Holy Communion?”

• “Can a divorced person marry in the Catholic Church?”

• “Why might a non-Catholic consider or need an annulment?” “Does a divorced person need an annulment when the mar-riage was performed only by a Justice of the Peace?” Often these questions and others have been met with misleading, misguided, and sometimes wrong responses. Perhaps you, a family member, or a friend needs sound, clear information. If so, please contact the Metropolitan Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Hartford at 860-541-6491 or e-mail at [email protected]. You can also visit our website at https://archdioceseofhartford.org/metropolitan-marriage-tribunal/. Workshops and informational sessions about annulments are now being offered. The current schedule is as follows:
