Food for Faith Living from the desk of Fr. Mark If there is any idea of God that is eventually accepted by people of faith, it is the realization “God’s ways are not our ways.” Trusting in God’s ways is a continuing message from God through all of Scripture as Isaiah (1st reading) states: “I am the Lord; there is no other.” Isaiah’s message is confirmed by God’s actions: the people are freed from their exile (captivity) in Babylon by a pagan, Cyrus, the founder of the Persian empire. Trusting in God is the essence of faith. It does not mean we sit and wait for God to act, to intervene, much less to call all the shots in our lives. It does mean we rely on God’s presence and promise, “I will never abandon you and I am with you always,” even as we are confronted by hardships, crisis and challenges which seem to weigh us down since answers and relief don’t appear as soon as we like them to. Through all the complexities of life, from health and job, tensions and relaxations, sadness, sorrows and joys and satisfaction, family, friends and communities to threats, evils and dangers, the hindsight of God’s Word being true becomes the conviction wherein we can face the future and all of its uncertainties. Faith is a strength just as love is an energy for living as God’s daughters and sons. Our frailty sometimes confuses us into doubting this is our treasure. As Paul (2nd reading) confirms: “God’s Word is not word alone, but is power in the Holy Spirit.” Thus, if we live the Word, we live in the spirit and are living temples of God. And we do this everywhere and with everyone as citizens and workers, church members and people of faith. Today’s Gospel tells us so: the leaders seek to trip up Jesus asking whether or not we are to obey Caesar (government). Jesus responds with a directive which unifies our duties to serve God and people. It is a call to be community and civic minded, to work for the common good of all, be it in family, community, state, nation, world or universe! Like all of Jesus’ answers to questions, it pulls the rug out from under our feet and all our distinctions, separations, divisions and alienations we erect, which all lead to expressions of violence inflicting injustice and abuses of human rights and the dignity and respect due to one and all. Once again, the delicate question: do I believe?

Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
