In a message sent to catechists from all over the world, Pope Francis stressed the need to

not only make Christ the center of their lives, but to be creative and adaptable in finding ways to reach the people in their area. “The catechist is creative; they search for different means and forms of announcing Christ,” he said. "Believing in Jesus is beautiful because Jesus is the way, truth and life “who fills our existence with joy and gladness,” the Pope said. “This quest to make Jesus known as supreme beauty leads us to find new signs and ways of transmitting the faith,” he said, noting that while the means might be different, what's important is to imitate “the style of Jesus, who adapted to the people he had before him in order to make them close to the love of God." A catechist is also someone who journeys both from and with Christ, he said. “They are not a person who starts from their own ideas and preferences, but who allows themselves to look to him, to this gaze that makes their heart burn.”

The more that Jesus is the center of our lives, the more he teaches us to go out of ourselves, Francis said, adding that we are then “decentralized” and able to be close to

others. “This dynamism of love is like the movement of the heart,” and Jesus himself gives us an example of how to live this when he retreats to pray, and then “immediately goes to the encounter of those who are hungry and thirsty for God in order to heal and save them.”

“From here arises the importance of the 'mystagogical' catechesis, which is the constant encounter with the Word and with the sacraments, and not something merely occasional prior to the celebration of the sacraments of Christian initiation,” he said. Pope Francis closes his speech by thanking catechists for their work, “above all because you walk with the People of God,” and encouraged them “to be joyful messengers, guardians of the good and the beauty that shines forth in the faithful life of the missionary disciple."

Our Lady of Good Counsel Faith Formation Program has once again opened its doors to

form our children, youth and adults to know, to grow and to deepen their faith in God. Another year has come upon all of us to take part in this program so as to continue to build the Church Jesus intended to be. I mentioned “us” because sharing our faith in God is not only the role of our catechists but every baptized Catholic. At the Sacramental Rite of Baptism, parents are asked if they clearly understand what they are undertaking when they ask the Church to have their child or children be baptized. That is, accepting the responsibility of training their child in the practice of the faith and their duty to bring them up to keep God’s commandments as Christ taught, by loving God and neighbor. So also, for godparents if they are ready to help the parents in their duty as Christian mothers and fathers. Thus, at baptism, parents and godparents enlist themselves to be witnesses for Jesus Christ as the child grows in faith. They become the first teachers of faith and living witnesses of Jesus. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to those who enlisted themselves this year for our catechetical program. They join you, parents and godparents, teach the faith to your children not only to prepare them to receive their sacraments but also to have a more profound and faithful relationship with Jesus. That, they only do not know about God but to know God and establish a loving bond with

Him. With the help and guidance of our catechists, those who learn about God, the Church, the Saints, and more will have a thoughtful understanding what it truly means to have faith and be a disciple of Jesus. As we celebrate Catechetical Sunday, we pray for our dear catechists. The mission entrusted to them is not easy. As volunteers, they also face the challenges of meeting the demands of their family and work. But they wholeheartedly opened up to share their time, talent and treasure to embark in the journey of faith. They need our support, assistance and understanding. Our parents need to help our catechists and participate actively. It is your primary role to help your children to teach the faith as you made your promises to God when they were baptized. Our catechists are there to assist you in these tremendous tasks and when there is a joint effort, you may be able to reap the fruits of your labor, to have men and women of faith focused on Jesus. The call to be a witness of Jesus is everyone’s call. His message needs to be proclaimed not only in the world but also in the church. His ways are to be lived every single day so that people will know that Jesus is truly present. He is the Only One who can renew our broken church with the Holy Spirit as inspiration and guide to the truth of the Gospel. The call to conversion and transformation are needed today. And this can only happen if we can have more and more people enlisting to be His witness, here and now.

Suggestions for future improvement:

Your comments are important to help determine potential improvements to be made with the bulletin. Thank you to those who took the time to add comments on the survey. Here’s a summary of some of your comments based on this survey. There were requests on the update on future building improvements, financial status of the parish and a periodic expansion of expenditures. A few prefers less inserts, less pages, bigger fonts and no abbreviations. Some suggestions were to synchronize catechesis with RCIA lessons, inspirational stories on how parishioners live their faith and show more projects and efforts of the parish community. Some commented on printing the bulletin in black and white to cut down on cost which could instead be used to help the needy, go back to using the printing shop and color is unnecessary. Some expressed their liking for the color, the many pictures, that it’s captivating, beautiful, neat, easy to read, informative and that they look forward to reading it weekly.

RESULTS OF BULLETIN SURVEY

By Bernadette V. Cabe

Thank you to all parishioners who participated in the in-pew bulletin survey this past weekend. It has been a little over a year since the new parish bulletin was published. Besides the first and last pages being in

color, a completely new layout and topics were added to it. The bulletin team brainstorms every so often to enhance the layout to include the background on the first page, color scheme and general appearance of the bulletin to make it more appealing to the parishioners. Careful research, preparation and coordination go into writing these articles and other information disseminated through the bulletin assuring readers of its veracity and relevance. The purpose of this survey was to obtain the parishioners’ overall opinion of the new bulletin and suggestions for future improvement. It is through surveys like this that we as a parish can truly know the needs of its community. Here are the results of the bulletin survey conducted on September 8 and 9, 2018 at all Masses:

BLESSING OF THE BIBLES

Students of grades 5 and 6 were each handed the Bible they will use through their final years at OLGC School. Religion teacher

of grades 4-8, Mrs. Catherine Garnsey, organized two beautiful services for the students to receive their Bibles, have them blessed by Father Pascual, and listened to him as he described the importance of the Bible and daily forms of prayer and activity with the Bible. The students take ownership of the Bible and it is used in Religion class. Students are also welcome to hold it in their backpacks so it is available at home for prayer and reflection too! Our school is so blessed with the love and support of Father Pascual and Father Alfred. They always make themselves available to our students so that events like this are made extra special. Their constant presence to our students at the weekly school Mass on Thursdays and on campus is truly appreciated.

St. James asks what our love for Jesus Christ can possibly mean if it does not result in action on behalf of, and to benefit, our neighbor. He suggests that faith in Jesus Christ is domonstrated most profoundly in our care for the needy, the suffering, and the underprivileged. Stewardship includes proclaiming the Good News by putting our faith into action on behalf of others. In what ways have we been willing to make sacrifies and renunciations for the sake of Jesus Christ and our neighbor?

LIFELONG CATECHESIS by Rev. Alfred Omar B. GuerreroParochial Vicar/Director of Liturgy

This weekend, the Church celebrates Catechetical Sunday under the theme of “Enlisting Witness for Jesus

Christ.” Catechists of our parish are formally commissioned for ministry to the community at most of our Masses. Catechetical Sunday every year is a wonderful reminder to reflect on the role that each baptized person plays a role in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Bishop Robert Barron, Chairman of the Committee

on Evangelization and Catechesis, writes in his 2018 Catechetical Sunday message, “We are living in a secularized society which continues to squeeze Christianity to the margins, or completely out of engagement with Jesus Christ and the Church.” He speaks of the alarming rate of baptized Catholics leaving the Church “after preparing for and celebrating initiation sacraments, and after years of Catholic School or parish religion classes.” But “at the same time, we are blessed with an incredibly generous cohort of faithful who are sacramentally graced to give Gospel witness in their homes, schools and workplace, if only they were invited, trained and supported in their outreach as missionary disciples. It will take the whole Church’s witness and engagement of the “Nones”, inside and outside

the walls of the church and across society, to reach out, accompany them, and share the joy of the gospel with them.” “Nones” are those people with no religious affiliation.

Pope St. John Paul II is believed to be the first to call for a New Evangelization in 1983. Both Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and Pope Francis have also been calling for a New Evangelization. Pope Benedict XVI said at the concluding Mass of the Synod of Bishops that “the new evangelization applies to the whole of the Church’s life. It applies, in the first instance, to the ordinary pastoral ministry that must be more animated by the fire of the Spirit, so as to inflame the hearts of the faithful who regularly take part in community worship and gather on the Lord’s Day to be nourished by his word and by the bread of eternal life.” In Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis wrote “every Christian is challenged, here and now, to be actively engaged in evangelization; indeed, anyone who has truly experienced God’s saving love does not need much time or lengthy training to go out and proclaim that love.” More than ever we are called to exercise our baptismal priesthood in proclaiming the Good News and witnessing to Jesus!

The gospel is never only about what Jesus did long ago and far away, but also about what he is doing now. Just as he overturned the corruption in the Temple two thousand years ago with his

whips and cords, he is turning his beloved Church upside down at this moment, not as an act of hatred but as an act of merciful, purifying love. Yes, it is true we would rather he deal with us by way of the well-groomed and mannered ways of gentility, but if he comes in unkempt and unsmiling, we also need to recognize his presence with us there as a transforming and ultimately loving presence. We therefore stand before Jesus, sinful and sorrowful, deaf to the plight of those who suffer and mute as the agents of their freedom, and we ask Jesus to look up to heaven for us, to emit his healing groan for his sinful people, and to pronounce anew his “Effata,” “Be opened,” so that we can hear more clearly his glorious voice and speak more boldly of the cleansing fire of his love.

BISHOP LARRY SILVA
