INFANT BAPTISMS For children under 7 years of age, the sacrament is celebrated the FIRST Sunday of the month at 2:00 pm. The parents must register in the parish office at least 4 weeks prior to the baptism. Both parents and godparents are expected to attend one catechetical session in advance, on the Wednesday before the baptism, at 7:00 pm.

SACRAMENTS OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION Before being fully initiated into the sacramental life of the Church, children over the age of 7 will need catechetical prepa-ration through the RCIC process. Teenagers and adults will par-ticipate in separate RCIA processes. CONFIRMATION and COMMUNION For those already baptized, preparation for these Sacraments will take place according to the person’s age and knowledge of the Catholic Faith. For further information contact the Office of Faith Formation Program.

MARRIAGES Couples should contact the parish office at least six months in advance to make the proper ar rangements for the Sacrament of Matrimony.

Monday, January 20th, is the Martin Luther King Jr. Day and a National Holiday. The Rectory Office will be closed. No Mass at 7 am. The Church will close following the 8:30 am Mass.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Dear Parishioners, At the 12 pm Spanish Mass this Sunday, January 19th we will have the image of Our Lady of Altagracia displayed in the sanctuary to remember Our Lady and the devotion to her under this title that began about 1500 in the Dominican Republic. The official memorial date is January 21st. Altagracia means “high grace”. Mary is the model for the church and she is our Mother and interces-sor. Mary shows us her life which is full of grace because she was chosen by God and responded to her call by cooperating fully with the grace God gave her in her life.

We need God’s grace in our lives to manage the many trials, challenges, opportunities, distrac-tions and choices that are part of our journey in life. How do we go in the right direction? We need God’s help, guidance, strength which all comes with his grace.

An important issue of our society that we can pray about and ask God to help us to manage in our lives is the issue of human rights. This Monday, January 20th, is Martin Luther King Day. Martin Luther King fought for civil rights and was a major leader in the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s. He pointed out the dignity of people and was able to stop the public, legalized racial segre-gation. His message about the dignity of all people of every race is so important. In order to be moti-vated to treat people with dignity, one must believe in the dignity of the human person. Laws can protect people from abuse where it can be applied but it takes God’s grace to change hearts so that we may want to respect and come to love our neighbor. We know that the struggle against hate con-tinues today as we hear about violent attacks against people because of race, religion or other iden-tification. We need to pray for an end to all hate crimes. Those reported, not reported and yet to be recognized by our society.

Another example of not respecting human rights in our society is abortion. This Tuesday, Janu-ary 21st, begins the national nine day novena for life from January 21-29th. This Friday, January 24th there will be the annual March for Life in Wash-ington. See the information in the bulletin about calling to reserve a seat on a bus. Let us pray for an end to abortion, euthanasia, capital punishment and acts that do not respect the God-given gift of life.

God wants to fill us all with his grace and to know his salvation. Let us pray to be instruments of God’s grace in the world today.

Queridos Feligreses:

En la misa en español de las 12pm este domingo, 19 de enero tendremos la imagen de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia exhibida en el santuario para recordar a Nuestra Señora y la devoción a ella bajo este título que comenzó alrededor de 1500 en la República Dominicana. La fecha conmem-orativa oficial es el 21 de enero. Altagracia significa "alta gracia". María es la modelo de la iglesia y es nuestra Madre e intercesora. María nos muestra su vida llena de gracia porque fue elegida por Dios y respondió a su llamado cooperando plenamente con la gracia que Dios le dio en su vida. Necesitamos la gracia de Dios en nuestras vidas para manejar las muchas pruebas, desafíos, oportunidades, distracciones y elecciones que son parte de nuestro viaje en la vida. ¿Cómo vamos en la dirección correcta? Necesitamos la ayuda, la guía, la fuerza de Dios, todo lo cual viene con su gracia. Una cuestión importante de nuestra sociedad sobre la que podemos orar y pedirle a Dios que nos ayude a gestionar en nuestras vidas es la cuestión de los derechos humanos. Este lunes 20 de enero es el día de Martin Luther King. Martin Luther King luchó por los derechos civiles y fue un im-portante líder en el movimiento de derechos civiles de los años cincuenta y sesenta. Señaló la digni-dad de las personas y pudo detener la segregación racial legalizada y la pública. Su mensaje sobre la dignidad de todas las personas de todas las razas es muy importante. Para estar motivado a tra-tar a las personas con dignidad, uno debe creer en la dignidad de la persona humana. Las leyes pueden proteger a las personas del abuso donde se puede aplicar, pero se necesita la gracia de Dios para cambiar los corazones para que podamos querer respetar y amar a nuestro prójimo. Sabemos que la lucha contra el odio continúa hoy cuando escuchamos acerca de ataques violentos contra per-sonas por motivos de raza, religión u otra identificación. Necesitamos orar por el fin de todos los crímenes de odio. Los reportados, no reportados y aún no reconocidos por nuestra sociedad. Otro ejemplo de no respetar los derechos humanos en nuestra sociedad es el aborto. Este mar-tes 21 de enero comienza la novena nacional de nueve días para la vida del 21 al 29 de enero. POPE FRANCIS has issued Motu Proprio instituting the “Sunday of the Word of God” for all dioces-es and churches throughout the world. The first-ever “Sunday of the Word of God” will be held on January 26, 2020. Pope Francis suggests that all parishioners bring their personal or family Bible to Mass with them on this Sunday so that the celebrant can offer a prayer of commitment and blessing over the people as they hold their own bibles. EL PAPA FRANCISCO ha emitido Motu Proprio instituyendo el "Domingo de la Palabra de Dios" para todas las diócesis e iglesias en todo el mundo. El primer "Domingo de la Palabra de Dios" se llevará a cabo el 26 de enero de 2020. SAINT AGNES (died 304)   January 21 Writing about Saint Agnes in the year 377, Saint Ambrose, Bishop of Milan, declared: “This is a virgin’s birth-day into heaven: let us imitate her chastity! And a martyr’s heavenly birthday: let us offer ourselves in sacrifice!” Chas-tity: mastery of oneself in order to give of oneself whether in the priestly, religious, married, or single state. Sacrifice: “to make holy,” to set someone or something apart for service. Ambrose knew these virtues indispensable for disciple-ship, but challenging to practice in his world—or our own. Barely a teenager, Agnes faced gruesome tortures bravely and, when ordered to worship pagan gods, boldly made the Sign of the Cross instead. Thus, her youthful courage strengthened adult believers who wavered under persecution or grew indifferent when persecutions passed. To bestow on Agnes its highest honor and keep her witness fresh in believers’ hearts, the Church inscribed her name at the heart of the Eucharistic liturgy, in the Roman Canon (Eucharistic Prayer I), until Vatican II the Roman Church’s only Eucharistic Prayer.  SAN VICENTE (Siglo III) 22 de enero San Vicente nació en Zaragoza, España y, debido a su buen uso de la palabra y formación académica, fue nom-brado como coadjutor del obispo Valerio para que le ayudara en la predicación, pues el obispo era tartamudo. Una vez ordenado diácono se distinguió por la predicación elocuente y la defensa de la fe. Fue arrestado mientras visitaba a su obispo, preso a causa de la persecución impulsada por el emperador Daciano quien, al saber que visitó a su obispo mandó que lo apresaran, haciéndolo caminar desde Zaragoza hasta Valencia. Una vez preso se le sometió a la tortura, no obstante, la tortura no lograba nada y el emperador, lleno de ira, mandó que golpearan a los torturadores. Poste-riormente le hizo encerrar en una celda oscura, llena de tiestos filosos para que se cortara sus pies, pero no renunció a su fe cristiana, convirtió al carcelero y cantó himnos de alabanza. Finalmente, puesto que nada lograba contra él, lo encarceló de por vida y ahí, en la soledad de su celda y sus enfermedades encontró la muerte.
