From the Principal & Deputy Principal

With the half way point of the school year now upon us and student reports coming

home on Friday afternoon, we encourage everyone to reflect upon the effort your

child/ren have earned and the detail within the teachers’ comments. This will assist

to ensure learning goals for the second half of the school year are adjusted and reach

the best possible outcomes.

We encourage you take advantage of our Term 3 optional interviews to clarify/refine

the learning goals for your child/ren with their teachers and ensure a 3 way

partnership in learning is maintained successfully. Interview request forms will be

sent home with reports on Friday.

In a recent professional reading from Dr Ragnar Purje, it was noted that learning

occurred as a result of intrinsic motivation and personal attitude of the student, for

which the student was responsible. This is one of the reasons we focus so much on

students giving their personal best every day for success. It was also noted that Ralph

Waldo Emerson wrote “The only person you are destined to become is the person

you decide to be”.

While we know that many things impact upon a child’s ability to learn and their

success at school, it is critical to note a few key elements of effort, partnership

between students, educators and home along with constructive and timely feedback

go a long way to ensuring success.

Triple J One Night Stand: Many hands make light work and we thank everyone who

has been involved over the past 5-6 years in securing the Triple J Concert in Lucindale

this year. This is a wonderful chance to not just show everyone what is possible if you

are committed to achieving something but a chance to share our town and its

facilities along with the surrounding areas of the South East so people can appreciate

just how amazing the South East and its towns are.

Facilities Updates: Following a phone link with Asset Services this week, we are now

progressing with the building restumping works and will be working with the

Department over the next month to review the buildings and formalising a plan to

address the state of our Secondary Art, Science and Computer Lab.

Page 2: Our Newsletter Issue 10 Term 2 2019.pdfchild/ren have earned and the detail within the teachers’ to ensure learning goals for the second half of the school year are adjusted and

Fundraising/Support for Pool: As we near the half way point of the pool build, with the concrete work complete

and the slab being poured this week for the new storage/filter sheds, it is so amazing to see the incredible

financial support for the project with community efforts now exceeding our base target of $170 000. With still

more options in the works to provide further financial support, such as the SRC fundraiser this Friday, it is a very

exciting time as we watch the pool being constructed. Please note just because the financial year has just finished,

it is still possible to make tax deductable donations through Stand Like Stone for the 2019/20 financial year.

We thank the Year 8 SRC for organising the Wacky Hair & Dress Up day this Friday and believe this is a great way

to finish off the first half of the school year. Gold Coin donations will go towards the Lucindale Community Pool

funds.

Staffing news: We celebrate Celeste Pietsch winning the Wellbeing Position for the second half of the 2019

School Year and we look forward to seeing her continue to implement practices across our school to support

students, staff and the wider community.

Professional Development: Last week some of our School Leaders attended the Annual Area Schools Conference

in Adelaide where we were able to meet directly with a number of Directors from the Education Department with

a particular focus on continuing the ICT upgrades/system improvements, Human Resources, Student Support and

the Learning Improvement Division. Time was also spent by our staff, meeting with the Education Minister and

Chief Executive to discuss matters pertinent to Area Schools and Lucindale. Throughout the conference we have

also worked with Phil Brown from Country Education Victoria and Professor Jim Watterston who worked with us

on what we can do to ensure country sites are world class. We look forward to continuing the work we started

with Jim as he is also now undertaking a significant project with our Education Department and its Learning

Division.

Given the recent strike action, we would like to thank all of our students and families for their support at what is a

difficult time for everyone. Let’s all look forward to reaching a successful outcome soon for the best possible

public education system we can have for all of our students.

Pool Management Committee: We are looking for nominations for the following positions to be part of the

Community Pool Management Committee. The committee will meet in the first few weeks of next term and if you

are interested in being considered for any of the positions below please contact Adrian at the school on 87662084

to express your interest.

The positions are:

Governing Council Representative

School Grounds Manager

LINC/Community Representative:

Naracoorte/Lucindale Council Representative

Principal/Nominee Lucindale Area School

Student Representative Lucindale Area School

Parent/Community Representative

Local Clubs Representative

Lucindale Lions Representative

Please ensure that over the school holidays everyone recharges their batteries and that we are all able to return in

Term 3 full of life and energy ready to continue to strive for excellence in learning along with our School Open Day,

Triple J One Night Stand, Breakspear Learning Sprints and Adelaide Show. Please note school finishes at 2:10pm on

Friday 5th July with buses leaving at 2:20pm.

Thank you all for a wonderful first half of 2019 and we wish everyone a safe and happy holidays where batteries

can be recharged for Semester 2.

Pastoral Care Corner Hi everyone, Recently I attended some training that is being delivered to all Pastoral Care Workers based on the Wellbeing Classroom Framework. One of the biggest things I took away from the day was just how powerful it can be for a young person to be able to express a feeling to explain what they are experiencing. The following steps are known as, ‘Emotion Coaching’ and having a large emotional vocabulary is very helpful in this process. I would just like to encourage you to have a go at this but do not expect to be excellent at it straight away (I have been learning this). Don’t give up though – keep trying!

Step 1: Be aware of your child’s emotions. Parents who emotion coach are aware of their own feelings and sensitive to the emotions present in their children. They do not require their child to amp up their emotional expression for the feelings to be acknowledged.

Step 2: See emotions as an opportunity for connection and teaching. Children’s emotions are not an inconvenience or a challenge. They are an opportunity to connect with your child and coach them through a challenging feeling.

Step 3: Listen and validate the feelings. Give your child your full attention while you listen to their emotional expression. Reflect back what you hear, thus telling your child you understand what they’re seeing and experiencing.

Step 4: Label their emotions. After you have fully listened, help your child develop an awareness of and vocabulary for their emotional expression.

Step 5: Help your child problem-solve with limits. All emotions are acceptable but all behaviours are not. Help your child cope with his or her emotions by developing problem-solving skills. Limit the expression to appropriate behaviours. This involves helping your child set goals and generating solutions to reach those goals.

Sometimes the steps of emotion coaching happen quickly. Other times, these steps may take a great deal of time. Patience is key. If the problem is a big one, all five steps don’t have to be completed in one interaction.

Finally, I wanted to float the idea of starting a group that meets once a month or so where we discuss anything mental health related in an effort to reduce stigma. No personal sharing unless you wish to, just talking about things you have heard about in the media or books you may have come across such as Turia Pitt’s ‘Good selfie’. Anything at all that may help encourage ourselves and/or others. If you are interested please contact me through the Front Office and I will get back to you or email me at [email protected]

Lions Mad Minute Competition 2019

Firstly, I’d like to congratulate the Year 5 students who participated in the school Mad Minute competition. All students gave their personal best and our judges Mr Sommerville and Mr Copping were impressed! Thank you to you both for coming in to judge.

Lily Wilkin, Hannah Kiefel and Emma Pinchbeck competed at the Lions Mad Minute Upper Limestone Coast Grand Challenge Final at the Lucindale Soldiers Memorial Hall on Wednesday 26th June. They were competing against students from six other schools. The impromptu competition encourages students and helps them to gain confidence during public speaking. The girls spoke extremely well to tough challenge questions.

Thank you to the school staff who supported the girls during Mad Minute especially Barbara Woolard, Cathy Gill, Tash Wilkin, Naracoorte Lucindale Council and the Canteen Committee, particularly Amanda Carter who gave up her day to help with catering and packing up.

Felicity Jenke

Mad Minute Thoughts by Lily, Hannah & Emma

All the practise we did helped my confidence with the challenge and super challenge topics. My topic was ‘Who is the funniest person you know’, it was a little bit tricky but I could relate it to people in my classes that I think are funny. It was hard to explain to the audience how the people I talked about are funny and the things that they do. It was fun to sit and watch the other students speak to get ideas. Emma Pinchbeck I couldn’t wait until it was my turn. We were the second to last school to speak. It was super hard as well because the crowd was much bigger than our school competition. My challenge topic was ‘The Olden Days’, so I talked about how I thought it would be back then and I mentioned Ned Kelly and that I didn’t think back then would be very interesting. Mad Minute was quite fun and I felt nervous but I’m glad that I did it. Lily Wilkin I was really excited to have my shot and I found my topic a bit tricky. I got into a rhythm once I got started. My topic was ‘Ways to spend a rainy day’. I talked about what I do with my family and that I like to catch up on homework or spend time with family. I was really nervous but I am glad that I had the opportunity to have a go. Hannah Kiefel

Who remembers the excitement of having some pocket money to spend at the school tuckshop or the thrill of getting a lunch order??

For quite some years now our school Canteen has run at a loss and there has been discussion over time at Governing Council as to whether we keep it running or not, or whether to only have it open some

days of the school week.

We are seeking to try to at least get the canteen to meet its costs OR how exciting would it be to make a profit! We could then put back into improving the Canteen!!

So we need your help.....

We are going to be putting parents onto a Volunteer Roster – this will be an ‘Opt Out’ roster. If you cannot help out, you will need to let us know otherwise you will be rostered on to help with various

Canteen activities.

We hope to start the roster system in Term 3 this year, with it reset at the start of each year to accommodate for any changes. But we want to make it an effective system that works best for

everyone involved – so first off we would love your feedback......

The canteen activities are simple and we have a detailed schedule to help, along with our regular staff Jackie and Jo. Fridays are our busiest, with a lot of students having lunch orders so we are always

needing more hands to help. Our busiest time on all days is 11am-2pm. More information will be sent out with the roster once established.

We have some new ideas which we are implementing in addition to rostering. Firstly, on Tuesday each fortnight, we are looking to introduce ‘Tasty Tuesday’. This is for the Staff to buy from the staffroom

and can be items such as slice, cake, biscuits, muffins or similar, which can be sent in with your child or dropped off – this means those with regular commitments are still able to contribute to the Canteen. All money made from these items will go to the Canteen. If you don’t fancy yourself a cook or are too

time poor, don’t worry, packet mix items or store bought is fine!

We are also looking to cater for the Lions Club meetings about once a term on a Wednesday evenings. This is a 2 course meal (nothing fancy needed) with the money paid by the Lucindale Lions Club to go

into the Canteen. The Canteen will provide the supplies for these meals and you will be assigned a part of the meal to prepare so that the work is shared.

On the form over the page, please tick any relevant to you, and please feel free to add any comments or call

Liz Crosby on 0432 686 078 to discuss further.

Please return this form to the Front Office by Friday 5th July, 2019.

Kind regards,

Canteen Committee, Lucindale Area School
