Bread in Hornsby costs $75Keeping frozen bread in that old fridge in the shed costs around $25 a month, that’s $75 over three months!

Giving up an old second working fridge to Fridge Buyback will save around $300 on power bills.

2,500 Hornsby residents are already saving over $750,000 on power bills every year.

If all Hornsby residents recycled their old fridges and freezers they would save $4 million every year!

Fridge Buyback can help make real savings!

Second fridges or upright freezers must be in regular use, built before 1996 and 200 litres or greater in size. A $35 rebate is paid when homes have six steps or less. Go to www.fridgebuyback.com.au or call 1800 708 401 to make a booking.

What is a bioretention basin?Good question … a bioretention basin is a purposely built structure that mimics what a wetland does in nature. It uses the combination of plants and sand to naturally filter and remove pollutants from the stormwater that runs off our roads and properties.

Typically, a trap first collects the litter and leaves, then the stormwater flows into a sediment forebay area which slows the flow allowing course sediment to drop out for later removal. Water then disperses over the surface of the basin where native grasses, shrubs and trees are densely planted to absorb pollutants. The run-off water is then filtered as it passes through almost a metre of loamy sand. The end result – cleaner, treated water flows to local creeks and estuaries for us all to enjoy.

Bioretention basins have been installed across the Shire, funded by the Catchments Remediation Rate which is a special rate used to improve and protect our waterways.

Leaves, litter, car wash detergent, dog poo, engine oil, heavy metals from motor vehicle wear and tear, dissolved nutrients found in garden fertilisers and sediment from building sites all pollute our waterways.

So remember ... the stormwater drain is just for rain!

The most recently completed bioretention basin is at Appletree Drive, Cherrybrook.

Steve Russell Mayor Hornsby Shire Council

Australians All Let Us Rejoice…Citizenship ceremonies are an important part of my role as Mayor of Hornsby Shire and it is an event that I find truly inspiring. Since entering office last year, I have overseen 1,155 people become Australian citizens in 28 ceremonies.

There are countless places in the world they could have gone to make their fresh start and it’s heartening to know that they chose not only our country but also our Shire.

In a ceremony back in August I had the pleasure to meet 24-year-old Monica Dede Amon from Ghana who took the citizenship pledge. Her story is one of hardship and she faced a bleak future until she was adopted and brought to Australia.

Monica told me that she found Australia a very peaceful country and in particular the people of Hornsby were very kind hearted, she said “they’re always smiling and trying to help everybody” and that she felt “really proud to be an Australian citizen”.

THERE ARE MANY DREAMS FOR THE HEART OF HORNSBY

Hornsby West Side Precinct Planning Proposal

Hornsby Council began performing ceremonies in the 1950s and since then nearly 33,000 people have received their Australian Citizenship at Council Chambers. People come from far and wide but the top five countries over the last six months have been the United Kingdom, India, China, Iran and South Korea.

If you’re interested in finding out more about ‘who lives here’, check out the video on our YouTube channel at youtube.com/hornsbycouncil.

You have until Friday 8 November to send us your submissions for the Hornsby West Side Planning Proposal. This Planning Proposal applies to the commercial precinct along the Pacific Highway from Coronation Street in the north to the RSL club in the south.

Council wants to transform the run down appearance and “old town centre” feel of the West Side into the “Heart of Hornsby”, a desirable place to live, work and visit. The objectives are to increase residential and employment development opportunities revitalise and preserve the heritage character of the area, and to reinforce the role and status of Hornsby Town Centre as a Major Centre.

You can view The Planning Proposal at hornsby.nsw.gov.au/onexhibition or Council’s libraries, Administration Centre, 296 Pacific Highway, Hornsby, during business hours. Submissions can be sent by email to [email protected], or post to Hornsby Council, PO Box 37, Hornsby NSW 1630.

my lifestyleOur site … our futureBecoming a Bushcare Volunteer makes a difference to the environment and to people’s lives. Hornsby Shire Council has been running a bushcare program since 1989 and it’s one of the largest programs of its kind in the State.

Ann Brown from the Wareemba bushcare group in Thornleigh told us “Recently I was asked to mentor a high school student for her Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. She had chosen Bush Regeneration and I thoroughly enjoyed sharing my ‘plot’ with a young keen student. It was rewarding to realise that our regeneration efforts have been noticed and appreciated.”

There are over 100 Bushcare sites around the Hornsby Shire area. Bushcare Volunteers come from all walks of life and all ages, most groups meet for about three hours one day per month. If you feel like making a difference to your local environment whilst enjoying our beautiful bushland shire and meeting new people, then call our friendly Bushcare team.

Call 9847 6362, email [email protected], or visit hornsby.nsw.gov.au/bushcare and complete an online application form.

Kangaroo Point construction updateThe rejuvenation of Kangaroo Point, overlooking the picturesque Hawkesbury River, is well underway.

Kangaroo Point has long been a favourite spot for people to come and admire the magnificent river that makes up the northern border of our Shire. It also has significant Indigenous and European heritage.

Council has been revitalising and improving the park over the last few months, stone retaining walls that will enclose parkland are nearing completion and a new viewing deck has been completed. Paving, park furniture and other landscape works are proceeding.

The viewing deck is the highlight of the park with panoramic views out across the Hawkesbury River and the Railway Bridge from the shade of a large attractive Fig tree. Another highlight will be the privately-owned restaurant that is currently under construction.

Steve Russell, Mayor of Hornsby Shire commented “This is going to become a park that is worthy of the position it occupies as the northern gateway to Hornsby Shire and is a great example of Council working together with business to achieve a good result for all residents”. The majority of the work is expected to be completed by the end of the year, so watch this space.
